I can't be the only one that misses the old live version of Knockin' On Heaven's Door (and UYI II version!). It was amazing and so much more energetic and melodic than the current version! Would love to see Axl go back to the old way of playing it cause it blows away the 2000's version. In case you're living under a rock, this is what I'm talking about:

Don't get me wrong though, the new one is good but I just think the old way of playing it was better!

i wish they didn't play the damn song at all. it's long, it unoriginal, and i don't care if the it is a sing along, so could civil war or don't cry, could become one also.boycott KOHD! For good

Wow, Axl and the boys on top of the world...I get chills seeing Slash wail on that double neck. Sadly this band is a shell of its former self now.

While we're discussing the Freddy Mercury tribute, watch from 4:40 on and tell me it doesn't send chills all the way up your spine:

FUCK, WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO THIS BAND?????

Actually I love the way they have played it the last few years. Not saying I didn't like it before. I have always loved the song. But this is one case where I like the changes in it.

To me that's still one of the best performances of Paradise City ever, The energy they had running through them was incredible.

The current version is very good, and I'd say musically speaking it's the more melodic version. However, there is no denying that the old version had a certain live energy that cannot be matched. While I love the fact that the current band has chosen to do their own take of the song, I do miss hearing the faster paced, energy filled version that the original band used to play.

Great song either way, a solid cover!

I think you can look at KOHD as the song that has changed the most with the band over the years. Watching a version from '88 to '91 to '93 to '02 to '06 and now - every single one is so vastly different and it's like a snapshot into the band at each time. Sure, you could say that about any song, but it's KOHD that's changed the most with each lineup change...

thats a cool way to think about it...

quite frankly i cant choose which one i like better...

the 88 one is probably the most "raw"

the 91 version is just epic - escpecially the one at the Freddy Mercury Tribute

and the 02-now is more melodic and has a calm vibe (sans Axl's final scream)

it just depends on my mood

There's a million and one reasons as to why I perfer the old version to what we've been getting as of late.

the format is so honest and raw.. n' the climax's are very pronounce. It's a complete beginning, middle, and end creating a moving emotional rollercoaster.

AND IT NEVER GETS OLD! I can listen to every recording ever done of live original takes and it'll never grow boring or dull

the anticipation is always lit..

i think Slash had alot to do with it though with them orgasmic solos

Totally agree! It didn't even feel like a cover song cause it was so much different from and better than the original. Never gets old for me either! I listen to the studio version and Live Era version all the time! Also love the Ritz '88 performance and the link I originally posted. Slash was great on it but Ashba could kick ass on it too.

I think the way KOHD is currently being played has the best of both worlds. Has the slower pace which evokes a great feeling of catharsis but also has the sing-along energy of the live atmosphere.

Both the old version and new version kick some serious ass....though I do prefer the older one by a hair, I still wouldn't want them to do it the old way...cause the new version is just as awesome.

Covering such a classic song was beyond tacky in the first place. Adding a gospel choir and turning it into a stadium anthem is reaching Mariah Carey levels of hideousness.

(Although I do like Slash's guitar solo on the original GNR version).

Agree with 1. post.

KOHD was a classic. Now it's the time in the set when you go to take a piss.

Or just don't go to see a band you don't enjoy.

I love GNR new and old, but I agree, new version is piss o'clock for me.

In fact I think I did in 2006. Trouble is even when drinking all day the piss was never longer than the recent version of this song.

LUCKILY the end bit is better, so I just miss out the first half of the song to return to the better part.

AND just because someone doesn't like a bands cover version doesn't mean they hate the band.

What's funny to read is people saying the way they do it now is the "old way", yet it sounds closer to the original from "Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid".

There's easily 20 Dylan songs that I'd love to hear GNR take a crack at. Idiot Wind, Just Like A Woman, Masters of War, All Along The Watchtower, etc.

Too bad GNR didn't do the Bob Dylan 30th at the time.
