sweetness
There's a goddamn Five Finger Death Punch thread so I figured this was appropriateI'm a sucker for kickass heavy shit, I love it, maybe its a phase I'll grow out of, but these days its hard to find good edgy music that doesn't sound forced and corny as balls, but listening to bands like Botch, Coalese, Dillinger Escape Plan, and Converge has really opened my eyes to a whole new world of pissed off rhythm and chords that absolutely blows my mind unlike anything else. Talk about the good metalcore bands here, none of that br00tal 5 breakdowns per song shit manufactured for scene kids embracing the fad, I'm talking about the bands that were actually trying to make some solid fucking gritty as hell tasty dissonant polyrhythmic kickass jams <-- Status Quo covering DEP, a must watch
inthisriver
listening dep's Option Paralysis as i type this. Other than them I can't say I know much about the genre. Fortunate enough to see them do wish with NIN at last years Bonnaroo and then caught their set the next day. It was great.
sweetness
Nice! I've seen em live twice and they we're fucking insanely kickass both times, how they were able to put on such an energetic stage show and play the songs note for note is beyond me. Fucking intense show both times, you need to bring a change of clothes to a DEP show, not that I ever did that but it wouldn't be a bad idea. Its one thing when you're drenched in sweat after a concert but when you have other peoples blood on your shirt its its like eh...
Jakey Styley
It doesn't exist. Metalcore is bad and I am leaving this thread.
LightningBolt
Is The Dillinger Escape Plan really considered Metalcore? I like them regardless.Well, anyways, I've heard good things about Coalesce and Converge, but never gave a listen to either. I'll have to do it eventually. chevelle
Dillinger is more mathcore than anything, but no matter what you call them they're fucking amazing. I love the moments when it goes from full-on, throat-blasting aggression, to Greg singing his heart out. The contrast is amazing. Farewell, Mona Lisa is a fucking awesome song. sweetness
You can argue about specific sub-genres all day long but I think they're kinda silly when it comes down to it. I guess when I say metalcore Im being pretty broad, basically anything that has heavy riffage, odd time signatures and shit, not to mention some kind of screaming. Im basically talking about mathcore, which is pretty much the only metalcore that doesn't suck total asshole, I just hate the term mathcore haha, sounds so gayPretty much anything influenced by Botch or Convergehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hiMcc_DS8Ds ^^^^shit like that^^^^

I know a guy who's son is in a band, they refer to their particular genre as "blackened crust".I've never met a "crust punk" that wasn't an arrogant dumbass. This one crust band my friend was promoting for a show took the pre-sale tickets and just handed them out to people instead of selling them like they were supposed to, needless to say my friend was fucking pissed off because it was a big show with a touring act, he ended up taking one of their guitars away
LLL
It's not Metalcore, whatever that genre dictates to be Metalcore, but this band has raw heavy stuff:

LightningBolt
I'd guess that Blackened Crust would be a combination of Crust punk with Black metal. I have no clue what that would be, though.

bt88
Coalesce and Converge are not even close to metalcore. Converge is one of the most solid bands around, consistently heavy and interesting. Coalesce takes some digestion. DEP is amazing, not metalcore in the least. If you like the basic ideas behind metalcoe but are sick of the oversaturation, you cant go wrong with the first two Killswitch Engage albums. Great efforts before the market got flooded. The new As I Lay Dying isnt bad either. Lamb of God is good old fashioned american metal without the blast beats and breakdowns with clean vocal choruses so often seen in metalcore. I started a thread on them but Nachymystium to me is a creative metal band that rebuffs any true genre stereotype. SO in conclusion if youre sick of metalcore, there are plenty of solid options out there

Graeme
I love All That Remains, a metalcore band who seem to have one foot truly rooted in the Melodic Death Metal of the mid 1990s. The Problem with the MDM scene now is it's just full of pretentious twats who want to be At The Gates, Dark Tranquility or In Flames. All That Remains have a fresh, tight approach to their music, an amazing grasp of melody and harmony, none of that chugging, machine gun guitar which Killswitch Engage employ far too much a lead singer with a hugely versatile voice for both screamed and clean vocals. Not to mention they are AMAZING live. Also, if you're putting them in the bracket, I've seen them described using various "core" words, then Between The Buried and Me are an absolute well of talent. Unique, aggressive and at times very beautiful indeed. The most ridiculous genre for me seems to be "crabcore" (see Attack! Attack!)

It's not even so much that those bands are completely terrible, to me it's that every single one of them sounds exactly the same. I consider Attack Attack the Britney Spears of metal. Agreed, but like I said earlier, Im pretty much including everything thats heavy and has screaming when I say metalcore. Maybe I'm wrong to do that, but I just wanted to bypass the tediousness of being so sub-genre specific, because with any metal thats just...ugh. Honestly, I admire the differences between all these bands, but if there's some kind of metal and hardcore influence I've always had them under the same category, which by default I've always just considered to be "metalcore". If I had it my way I'd just call them metal bands but I'd get torn apart for thathttp://www.myspace.com/thearmed <-- this band is really fuckin cool, they're a lot like dillinger and converge but way more rock n roll, they have this bluesy punk kinda swing to them that really makes them stand outagain, not really metalcore by definition at all, but this is the kinda shit I'm talking about Edited June 13, 2010 by sweetness
