The story behind it is, the album was already entirely written and The Rev had demoed his drums for the songs. After he died, they got Mike Portnoy, his favorite drummer, to fill in and play the songs as close to how The Rev originally envisioned them. Besides the drums, he wrote a good chunk of the music as well, so throwing out all the music he wrote and never letting it see the light of day would be more disrespectful then replacing him and soldiering on.

Just got my ticket now though, had to pay a bit extra for it... but it should be worth it!
