Anybody else think that the late start times are a part of what makes GNR shows so special?

Anybody else think that the late start times are a part of what makes GNR shows so special? Going to see GNR is like going to an all night party that the pigs aren't able to break up. I've always thought that it was pretty lame that most concerts are over by 11 pm.

Gotta admit, I hate when most concerts are over before midnight... it's like, 'what the fuck am I gonna do now?'

If I were 19, different story... but alas, I am not....

There's not much to do in Victoria after a show gets out anyway. The Save on Food Centre fucking sucks!

Yea Vic's pretty shit, and the sound at the S-O-F centre is terrible, which is funny because they spent fucking tons on it.

I always prefer going to shows in Vancouver, at you least you can wander around and still have some fun....

It would be better if they went on on time or on at about 1am. Either way would give people who use public transport

a chance to get home (last bus or first bus).

But as one of those who went to Dublin, only a tiny percentage of people see anything positive about Axl going on late.

It's actually very boring waiting around for someone to come on.

The late start makes the whole thing very exhausting if you have to travel to witness the show like I did, but I admit that it helps building the tension...

I personally don't mind, but you're right... if your traveling and it starts late, it can be exhausting.

I think alot of fans would be alright with it if the doors opened later too. I certainly don't have a problem with them starting late but having to wait 90 minutes after a support act for them is tiresome, and drinks at a venue are fucking outrageously priced.

Just show up to the venue late. If I'm going to see GNR I don't show up to the arena until around 10 pm. My only complaint about the late starts is when the venues cut off liquor sales early. Now that is just wrong!

This "building tension" theory is ridiculously stupid. There is nothing exciting about listening to the house speakers while an entire arena is booing your favorite singer for two hours. Axl could achieve greater effect with a simple extended introduction. In 2002, he used ominous music and quotes from The Exorcist before piledriving into Jungle. That created atmosphere and tension in less than five minutes..

its a double edged sword.

on one hand, you cant go to a gnr concert, sing along to its so easy, and then bitch because it ran late.

on the other, it shows a lot of disrespect / indifference to the fans, whether its intentional or not (i dont believe it is).

then back to the first hand, i remember the next night after gnr 06, getting out at 10:30 after the goo goo dolls, and feeling like a huge homo.

(the concert getting over at 10:30 felt weird too, har har)

Special in a bad way. The late thing only resuts in good portions of the crowd being too tired to sing along, scream, dance or just clap their hands. It's like watching a movie just before you go to sleep, you get it, you like it, it might be the greatest movie ever, but you just can't appreciate it as much as if you were less tired. It's frustrating, the longer the wait, the more people get exhausted and are absent with their minds, don't focus on the show, but on how to get home or what to tell the boss the next day, it makes you enjoy the show a lot less and it results in people leaving before the encore or giving bad reviews even if the show was good. The sad thing is the band knows and even cares about this, but they can't do a thing about it. It's Axl being Axl, sometimes he just has to warm up and get into it before going out, sometimes he's not even in the same country while the band is waiting backstage ready to rumble. It's exhausting for them too, it just drains a lot of energy out of the whole thing.

its hard for normal people to comprehend but ive been in phases where waking up at 8pm felt about as reasonable as 3am.

Night person here, been working nightshifts all my life, suffering from sleeping disorders and its effects whenever I'm forced into a day schedule, so I understand all the personal, social and time mangement problems that come with this just perfectly. For everyone else you are an alien and they are like "look, that fucker is sleeping all day while we are working" but they don't see you working all night while they are sleeping. It is what it is, no point educating people about it, but when you've got to get your shit together you've got to get your shit together.

And if he goes on before he's ready I guess bad things happen. I do think it adds something to the show when it works out.

The only problem is that sometimes it does not work out (crowd riots, curfew, power getting cut off, etc.)

But he does seem to be in a better mood when he goes on later. There are pros and cons to both IMO
