Lithium
Oh, man, bummer. Trout Mask Replica was the first album that truly mindfucked me. Safe as Milk is fucking brilliant as well. RIP

dalsh327
Thankfully there's a lot of You Tube clips of him and the Magic Band. With Tom Waits being inducted in the RRHOF, I'm sure some people are going to start calling Waits a "rip off" because Van Vliet was overlooked for years, even though Rolling Stone had usually put "Trout Mask Replica" in their all time favorite lists. It's all Howlin' Wolf style when it comes down to it. I think the only artist Don had contacted was PJ Harvey, because one of Beefheart's former bandmates passed one of her CDs on to him. And later era guitarist Gary Lucas wound up working with Jeff Buckley, and Gary was planning on doing a Beefheart tribute next month. "Diddy Wah Diddy" has been covered a bunch of times. "Dust Blows Forward" gives a great career overview, and if you can find "Grow Fins", it's a pretty good rarities and demo collection. I'll go with a Xmas theme one - "There Aint No Santa Claus on the Evenin' Stage" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1kho3_uXr4

Lithium
Ooooh. He's been writing a reply for a while now. I bet he's got some nice info about Tom Waits, Andy Warhol and Woodstock for me.

Then Don went into retirement from music and pretty much disappeared. With Tom Waits being inducted into the RRHOF just days ago, I'm just saying that there will prob. be some people who are far more music geek than me who are going to bring the comparisons up. But have I gone off on tangents? Sure. That's what happens in the forums, and I know I'm not unique when it comes to rants and rambles. But when you're a fan of someone, esp. if they're kind of obscure, you're going to geek out. And there's more to like about him than "Trout Mask Replica". Not sure how that has anything to do with intelligence. I just like listening to it every now and then. Henry Rollins played about 5 songs of his on his show last night as a tribute to him (it should be on the KCRW archives). And here's the LA Times reasons why he mattered: http://blogs.laweekly.com/westcoastsound/2010/12/captain_beefheart_facts.php
