GUNS N' ROSES - "ESTRANGED"

When GNR first hit MTV in 1987, they were the antithesis of big-haired bubbleglam bands like Poison, Europe, and the aforementioned Warrant. But their sound soon bloated along with their egos, and by the time they released the bombastic and self-indulgent Use Your Illusion two-volume set, they'd become the polar opposite of the lean, mean, rock 'n' roll machine they once were. Their cast-of-thousands "November Rain" video, with its Stephanie Seymour wedding scene and jillion-piece orchestra, or "Don't Cry," with its pointless cliff-jumping car stunts and unexplained Shannon Hoon cameo, were OTT enough. But "Estranged" was their real big-budget shark-jumper, as it came complete with oil tankers and dolphins. Yes, dolphins. It also featured men in white coats coming to cart Axl Rose away to the funny-farm.

And yet....Michael Jackson's Thriller is considered the greatest of all time.

:shrugs:

It totally is

Estranged is a complex song. I couldn't imagine a more rock n' roll/ straight video for it. Yes the video is over the top but wouldn't you go o.t.t. if you had the resources?

That's my point. Think about every MJ video made post Thriller. Think about the Black Or White video or Smooth Criminal. They were fucking MOVIES for crying out loud. If you compare the production and budgets of those videos to Estranged, they DWARF it.

But of course, it's ok for MJ.

The problem with that scenario is that there could never be a video that could do that song justice, imo. The more I ponder it, the more I realize that videos have ruined many a song too. There are a number of radio songs from years past that I could only fully appreciate once it had been years since I had seen the video, so that I could separate the two in my mind. But, yeah, not Gun's best video moment for sure, although it did feature Beta, which is a good thing if you're in the pro-Beta camp.

I like the video then and I like the video now. As I said, Guns N Roses weren't the first to have epic videos. I think they took it up the ass harder because their videos came out right when Nirvana,Pearl Jam,Soundgarden and the rest were changing pop culture. There was a move away from what Axl was doing at the time and it made alot of it seem "uncool".

I agree with Ghostie. How do you make a video for a song like Estranged. I always lliked the video back then. I guess now it looks a little over done but the song is heavy its hard to show that in a video. It is by no means in my book bad at all.

It is actually the production of estranged that dwarfs many of MJ's video, the thing had a budget of $4 million or $5.5 million in todays money, that is the 5th most expensive video of all time

According to this...it's behind three Madonna videos and one MJ video

Even so, my point is that those other artists don't take shit for it. Instead, they're praised. Everyone LOVES thriller and Smooth Criminal etc.

Estranged is a video with no destination like the band at that point. It has it's moments but is pointless and confusing as the band was at that time. When I think of my fav Illusion video it is always Garden of Eden. Just the band rocking out to some killer rock in roll with those amazing lyrics scrolling by-----As far as the estanged video ---It's kind of ironic cause the band members WERE estranged----still love the song though

I never liked the video nearly as much as the song but I think the shot of Slash rising up out of the water playing that awesome solo is pretty incredible. Maybe a little OTT but it fits the solo perfectly to me.

I've always been curious as to what it would've been like if Stephanie Seymour hadn't broken up with Axl before that video. I've never seen the making of video. Does it talk about what the original ideas for the video were?
