Why all the nostalgia for Robin now?

I see people bashing DJ and comparing him negatively to Robin, Robin of all people!

It's kind of amazing for me to see Robin being praised and looked back sentimentally now when while he was in the band he was unceasingly (but righteously, IMO) bashed here for 'ruining' the old songs and for his meandering, amateurish solos. Even his 'shining moment' on CD, This I Love's solo, is kind of poor and is for me the worst part of the song because as a solo it doesn't uplift or awe, it just feels like an anticlimax--It goes nowhere as a solo.

I don't get the dissatification with DJ around here. The guy is a melodic player and has the classic rock sound and style. He may not be technically gifted like Bumble or Bucket, but he's got a melodic flow to his playing and his style is very much in the Classic Guns mold.

Give me one solo that Robin ever did that matches up to just this one solo by DJ. I'll be honest, I wasn't sure about DJ myself until I heard Ballad of Death, but hearing it has convinced me he's the best thing to happen to Guns post 1996.

To be frank, people always complain about bandmembers until they leave. A lot of people who loathed Buckethead -- myself included -- now think he was the best thing to happen to "NuGN'R." Time gives clearer perspective.

I didn't think much of Robin in the band at first because Axl had him playing the old band's material, but once the '06 tour came around my opinion changed a bit. He has a very unique style and on his own songs it works very well. His solos on "TWAT," "If the World," "Better" and so on I've really got no problem with at all. Maybe once DJ records with the band and releases material more people will appreciate his work -- but as of now he's really just covering many other artists who have previously written for the band, so people aren't going to be as accepting. It's just common sense.

EDIT: One thing I will say about DJ is that, talent aside, I feel like he tries way too hard for the rock n' roll image. Sticking his cigarette in the guitar head for example. C'mon dude, it's 2011. Look at someone like Keith or Slash and they exude that natural don't-give-a-shit mentality; DJ just seems to be aiming for it, which I think a lot of people have picked up on and that's another reason he gets some shit on the forums from what I've observed.

The original video you had up of that song was absolutely awful. If that was the original recording, I'd be embarrassed, his bends were out of key and his tone was awful.

In the video you have up now its much better, but still, its some pretty generic guitar playing. He just doesn't do anything for me. He fits in gn'r well, but Robin was good for Guns because he added to mystique.

The original video was a cover version by someone which is why I replaced it.

Thats exactly what Im trying to say. Remember that twitter update where he thought he was the shit for smoking in a non smoking hotel room? I was like WTF? Robin on the other hand is the opposite of that. He isn't trying to please anyone. He doesn't try to fit in and he has his own uniqe way of playing guitar (and haricuts).

You don't think his whole 2006 look was just an attempt to ''fit in'' with Guns?

I certainly don't feel that that long hair + beard look was natural for him...He got rid of it as soon as NiN called back.

That to me is a real poser, someone who adapt even his own image just to fit whatever band he's in. That's someone who will sell their soul for a buck.

Makes no sense. His look and stage moves were still pretty outlandish. Remember the dresses and the black plastic bags he wore as vests?

I don't see how Robin ever 'sold his soul'

He doesn't even give interviews, get signature gear, or have a fabulous website, unlike Ashba.
