Bailey15
Whether you like the music or not, compare the marketing strategies for their comeback. dalsh327
There's a big difference between a producer who happened to hit it big as an artist, and a bandleader whose only focus is their band. Back in '99, he was saying "2001" was going to be his last CD.Skylar also wrote this song -
nambis
unfortunately, there's a GIANT difference between Dre and GNR...first off, Dre doesn't need to "comeback." he never left. he's been producing TOP hip hop records for decades, and especially since 2001 (which is why this new record kept getting pushed back). second of all, Dre still "has it," whereas most people view GNR as a nostalgia act... and not the "real" GNR, since it's only axl left. of course I don't think that, but that's what most people think. kyrie
Also the fact that in the US, rap/hip hop/r&b/pop/slutwave have taken over the charts and rock is dead.I wonder if Dre could draw the crowds Guns does in Europe/South America. Probably not. Apples and Oranges my friend. Probably a better comparison would be Alice in Chains who lost two original members including their singer (deceased), came back, got critical acclaim - but still didn't outsell CD. ITW 2012
This song is what I like to call a sellout. Eminem did the same thing with his comeback album. It's not worth it to compromise your integrity like this. Edited February 26, 2011 by ITW 2012
doakes
The situation is certainly different... No one cares about Axl anymore. Or at least no one outside of this forum-- Dre's been off doing his own thing, working, making money, making headphones, lol-- He's still been in the public eye. The first time Axl's made news since the disaster that was the VMA's, he's punching a photog in the face.Don't get me wrong-- I agree with the op- This is definitely how you make a comeback. A strong single, "epic" video. That's how it's done......even if Dre only performs for about a minute or two in a 7 minute video.... Imagine if Guns N' Roses released Madagascar with a video treatment like this...Unfortunately you can really see where Interscope's priority lies. Real Rock 'n' Roll is dead, so they're going all in on Hip Hop.
therealdoofey
Also the fact that in the US, rap/hip hop/r&b/pop/slutwave have taken over the charts and rock is dead. This is 100% true and thats why its not a fair comparison. Most rappers can come back easily. P Diddy, Dre, Em, anyone would have no problem because right now Rap and R&B are tops in the music world. They account for most of the albums that sold over 300,000 copies their first week last year. They can get a lot more mainstream press and attention.Very few people I know under 25 know who Guns N Roses are (or any older rock band). At the Super Bowl party I attended, I had to tell every kid there who Slash was. It's just not their thing.
Val22
Well maybe hip/hop or whatever the hell they're calling it today. I call is shit!I live in Dallas and we have tons of rock fans here. Anytime a rock band comes to town, be it, Killswitch Engage or Avenged Sevenfold or any 80's hair metal bands, fans come out by the thousands. We have all the metal festivals come here every summer and they practically sell out.Last summer I saw the Uproar festival with Avenged Sevenfold and Disturbed.I never in my life saw so many A7X shirts and it wasn't just teens. It was whole families. My whole family loves the band and we always go as a family to see them.I don't know how it is in other cities, but in Dallas, rock is still loved here and it shows when rock/metal concerts come to town!BTW, most times they usually play a GNR song during intermissions. A7X are huge Axl and GNR fans.
prez
Why is this song on Detox? It's basically an Eminem solo track and Dre didn't even produce it. This is like if "Stuck Inside" was on Chinese Democracy.
saber_
Yeah well at least Axl wouldn't allow the director of the video to show him repeatedly shifting into a higher gear by pressing the left shift paddle instead of the right. Duh. ; )
bran
rap and pop are what sells in america rock is dead if guns releases another 2 or 3 albums they will start to make some noise, they are still rather big in europe/asia and south america where their is still rock fans that want music in america their are pockets of hardcore rock and metal fans
nambis
it's funny to see some of you saying "rap sucks blah blah blah." why does there have to be a divide between rap and rock? stop being so close minded, there is good music is every genre. there's a lot of crap, too, but just because something is from a particular genre doesn't say anything about whether it's good or poor art. Agreed.Don't tell anyone but after 'Messages from Madagascar'. I really wish Axl and Slash figure it out and write a song like this one from Eminem to Dre and '14 years' . I love 'Sorry' and the new band. I am not talking about a full reunion but would feel much happier with a happy ending for all this feud. You know, Axl seems to be ok with Izzy and Duff now. It will be much sadder once either Axl or Slash are gone. Whatever Slash did to Axl. Axl being a very religious person should let it go for a few minutes and listen to the dude in the top hat. I know that ask for a song to come out of all this would be a stretch. Live on the streets and make it big was a stretch, wasn't it Dexter? chevelle
Dr. Dre doesn't even need to make a true comeback. He just needs to stir up a lot of attention for this one album, then he can disappear back to producing and hawking headphones. I believe him this time when he says it's his last album, so why should he concentrate on "coming back" if he's not going to be around long term? I also don't think the kinda of people who live in Dallas are gonna be rap fans. Get what I'm sayin partner B) Pretty much any other city your gonna have a larger hip hop audience. Also when speaking of rock n roll don't use avenged sevenfold, at least use a good band it's funny to see some of you saying "rap sucks blah blah blah." why does there have to be a divide between rap and rock? stop being so close minded, there is good music is every genre. there's a lot of crap, too, but just because something is from a particular genre doesn't say anything about whether it's good or poor art. people just dont like rap i never have never will. its not about being closed minded the music just doesnt do it for me or others , i still think of it as art just not my typeYea its just not my type as well, and I am always open to the music, its just that I only hear a few good things here an there. As much as there are horrible rock bands out there like Nickelback and Daughtry, there are just as many horrible rappers and rap groups like Jamie Foxx
eye2eye
Guns N' Roses are much bigger in Europe/South America as someone mentioned and sorry but Dr. Dre sold out with that album it is not pure rap it is commercial and poppy. If Axl wanted to go that way he would take Slash back add Rihanna/Lady Gaga to the mix release singles and would sell millions of copies. Axl is just Axl he won't sell out himself, he value integrity and being true to himself to much. And still CD sold somewhere between 4 to 5.5 million copies around the world, it was flop in USA for sure but worldwide it didn't sell much worse than Lady Gaga and it speak volumes
ITW 2012
What Axl really needs to do for the Better video is to get some porn stars, a yacht, and a copy of Pirates of the Caribbean. Then he can take Chinese Democracy all the way to the fourth dimension.
