20th anniversary of GN'R's 'Use Your Illusion I & II'

Slash talks about the making of UYI in the new issue of Total Guitar. I read the magazine today, it's a pretty good read. Slash was against the use of synthesizers, something Axl wanted. The signs were showing, Axl transforming from the AFD era Axl, to the Chinese Democracy era Axl, an Axl that would distance himself from all other bandmembers, and make little effort to show up in the studio. With Izzy already on the brink of quiting, Duff, Slash and Adler were the main forces behind UYI I and II. Duff was the one beind Get In The Ring, and Izzy was the one behind Double Talkin Jive, one track Slash really likes. Double Talking Jive is one of the best GN'R songs ever!

There's a CD on the cover. Among various non Guns N'Roses songs, You Could Be Mine is on the disc. Learn to play You Could Be Mine

Illusions were integral part of my pickup truck 20 years ago (changed the car several times, it’s still there; lasted longer than a Mercedes – ‘nough said). If there is the album that stood the test of time, in my collection, that’s Illusions I&II. I knew back then, they will never again make anything remotely similar or creative. Yet I have to say I expected more from GnR in the future -- more “by the book/generic/auto-pilot” studio albums (that would follow), for better or worse.

Illusions are also responsible for my disappointment with Chinese Democracy. After Illusions (in my view) they had 2 simple choices:

1. Do not release anything. Retire at the top of your game.

2. Make “GnR by the book” albums (think of Stones and “It’s Only Rock’n’Roll”, “Tattoo You”, “Steel Wheels”, etc)

Instead, we had “kind of a retirement” (15 years no albums), and then atypical non-GnR style album.

Also Illusions raised a bar for them so to speak, it’s something difficult to beat up.

To conclude the post on the positive note – It would be awesome if GnR camp decides to release Illusions-tour box set (live material; not necessarily the entire tour, but say 5 CDs, AS IS - no toying in the studio).

Has Slash ever mentioned in detail which parts of what songs he detested because of the added synths?

The mag mentions Live & Let Die and November Rain....but weren't they used solely to replicate string and brass sections? Not like the kinda synth you'd hear in Final Countdown/Jump (for example).

Or is it just the fact a keyboard was used at all on the record? :-/

Regardless of how the band felt about the synthesizers it did help to some degree. But I think it was their attitudes and personalities that also helped the band. I have no doubt that axl at times acted the same way that mr. Macky from south park acted in the tooth decay episode. Lol. But its things like that and the music that cement the bands legacy.

17 of September is a little to far from the 11 of June, don't ya think so Star?

and by the way, nice scheme with this one,

so that you could again show your allegiance!

and you lack, again info, on who made what on UYI.

Axl and Izzy were the driving forces.

just read the credits to the songs, and compare who put what in.

so stop spreading incorrect info.

so, please do make a clear documentation (the process of information, from various sources, which by compare lead to the same result) before you state anything.

but, nevertheless, nice try though. not.

i do fucking love the UYI albums. both slash and axl were just sublime on them

Both albums contain great work, many will admit, the synth stuff added nothing, and some of the songs seemed bloated / too long just for the sake of it.

Slash seems to say 36 songs recorded in 36 days. After that Axl took over and a huge delay kicked in. The delays were caused by Axl wanting to add Synth to various tracks, and various others instruments as played by various non GN'R members. And if that wasn't enough, Slash would record extra stuff and have it sent to Axl for approval. Band communication around this point was not face to face, but via a 3rd party.
