Didnt they rehearse Silkworms too? I do remember it was on the rehearsal setlist in that video about the tech guy which was recorded before Rock in Rio.

I'm 100% sure that the song in studio version or even with this live band would sound great.

Listen motherfuckers to this song that should be played!

That should be somebody's sign at a show.

I doubt they'd get it. I don't they'd look at that and go "Aww yeah! Silkworms reference!"

Think Axl's vocals on it might sound closer to the way he does Chinese Democracy live...which is a pretty weird voice. But it works.

I think Axl would. Add an illustration beneath of "pussy full of maggots." That will draw some attention.

Considering Silkworms has very little approval on a hard-core GNR fan forum, I doubt you'll ever hear this song live again. Consider most people around here are in agreement that the song sucks, I can't see them playing it before an audience that's 80 percent casual fans who want to hear hits.

To those who actually like this song, I'd be thankful it ever got played at all. Considering how many great songs are on Chinese Democracy, it amazes me that this song was ever performed live in the first place.

Cheers,

Andrew

Pretty sure Better, Shackler's, Sorry, Scraped are songs recorded later than that, probably in the 2002-05 era. Don't think this has ever been officially confirmed, though.

Probably played silkworms at rio cause they were "holding our big guns back"

Silkworms is waaay better than scraped in my opinion and would have been great for the record, Oh My God as a b side, bonus thing would be wunderbar or vice versa

Really curious after Wasted comment what the bucket solo is like....wonder what else changed

Buckethead has writing credits on Shackler's, Scraped, and Sorry, and didn't first join the band till 2000 or something like that.

Shackler's Revenge had a working title of Chicken Dinner, that's a sure sign that it came from Buckethead in the first place.

I was hoping to find a demo of Shackler's lying around. If you listen to any of Buckethead's solo records you can hear similarities.

I think Sorry, Shackler's Revenge and Scraped were probably written after 2000 (when Buckethead joined the band) and pretty much changed the musical direction of the album.

To those who think or like to speak in generalizations, I don't agree that this song is generally not liked. If GnR put out a new album tomorrow with all the songs we've known some of the titles for including Silkworms, we'd all go out and buy it. Who knows it might be epic in the context of how these other unheard songs flow.

Point is we all have our fav songs, and those songs we don't much care for. I admire GnR for performing Silkworms when they did. Despite it not quite seeming to be a finished song, especially with the middle part, I love it. I don't want a whole album like it however. People applaud Radiohead for going out on those weird tangents they sometimes do, yet GnR somehow failed with Silkworms?! No sir-ee. It's unique that's for sure, and no doubt was a work in progress. But the chorus part of it rocks hard. Anyway that's my 2 cents on it. I still hold out hope we'll get a CD2 and CD3 double release, with a redone CD1 with proper artwork and whatever things Axl wanted to finalise on it. Then once that's done, onto the new material.

This is GnR as experimental-rock as you can get.

Most people know teh RiR version as it is the only one that surfaced, you can feel the band (and especially Axl) hesitating sometimes during the song; This makes me feel that a fully worked and studio-polished version will sound EXTREMELY powerful!

As I said, this is My World with heavy guitars! Me like!

Someone on her said that Axl said that the fans are not ready for Silkworms. I'd like to hear it on CD2 or 3 and then newly written material. I think if there will be two more CD albums they will get more experimental.

That was my thinking too. CD2 and CD3 each getting more progressive, intense, hard/punk rock and experimental on our asses lol. If Axl really does have 2 albums worth of CD songs up his sleeves, the question then arises if they get re-recorded with the current band, or mastered from the original sessions. It certainly wouldn't take long to just record or re-record songs that have already been written. The only fear would be if things then get stuck on the mastering / tweaking phase.

I just hope GnR take advantage of the amazing past 2 years of touring. It seems even elements of the US media are acknowledging their great current performances. A new album would have a really good chance of doing well.

I think Axl will probably tinker with the remaining CD recordings before finally releasing them. The songs from Chinese Democracy have been recording somewhere from 2000 to 2006. Songs like IRS and TWAT were recorded with only Robin Finck as the lead guitar, Buckethead's game changing contributions didn't occur until after he joined the band and he recorded his parts from 2000 to 2004. If you check out the CD credits he's credited on almost every song, with solos on most of them. Shackler's Revenge and Scraped has Buckethead written all over it, but it was Ron who did the guitar solos (though Buckethead did that outro on Scraped). Sorry was also co-written by Buckethead and it sounds like they left it at that. Ron was then brought in 2006 to replace Buckethead and added his tracks including four guitar solos. Some of the songs has as many as six guitarists playing and its impossible to tell who's playing most of the time.

What I am getting at is that although Buckethead was no longer in the band when CD finally came out (and Robin Finck also left that year) he was a huge part of the album, and since he's and Robin were a huge part of the CD recordings, I don't think they will bother re-recording the songs. Just tweak them enough to include Ron and DJ on them.

I think with DJ in the band, he and Tommy can team up to push for more writing. Axl may have enough songs to release enough albums and call it a day but with a band with so many great songwriters and musicians, they have to come up with more music.

People would buy a new GNR album, especially those here, because it's a GNR album. It would have nothing to do with the possible inclusion of Silkworms. I always disliked Rhiad before Chinese Democracy came out and continue to dislike it even after hearing the studio version. But it's inclusion on CD had no bearing on whether I bought it or not. I do contend that it weakened the album and believe there has to be at least one or two songs that have been held back are better.

If you review the posts made in this thread, a majority of them view the song negatively. Quite frankly, in my opinion, it's not a well constructed song. It has no hook, it's not accessible, and the lyrics are wretched. That's just my opinion, but it seems to be shared by most people who've posted in this thread. So if a majority of the hardcore fanbase reject the song, it's unlikely that it will find favour with a casual GNR audience.. Does that mean Axl and co. shouldn't experiment and push boundaries because Silkworms doesn't work for most of those who hear it? Absolutely not. But it's definitely a miss. You mention Radiohead and their tendency to experiment. The difference here is that most Radiohead fans approve of some of the band's experimental songs. Moreover, a lot of their experimental songs are still commercially viable, which can't be said about Silkworms.

Silkworms fails for me not because it's experimental. It fails because it's just not a very good song for reasons I've already given. There's some people on here that enjoy My World. And most of those people would be in the minority.

Cheers,

Andrew

Remember also that the Rock in Rio recording is not exactly Axl in his best form.

I like the super-venomous lyrics, I just feel it could use another verse or two of them. If the guitar parts are reworked they could pasily produce a hook.

I think if they choose to play it, it would be best used in the place of a jam piece. Vocals aren't too intense and give plenty of long breaks, and it serves as kind of a solo spot for Chris Pitman, who's in the shadows the entire time.

And it would make a great lead-in for something like You Could Be Mine, Sorry, or Shackler's.

Would be quite badass. I think YCBM could actually mix pretty well into that set too, perhaps another one like Right Next Door to Hell or Back Off Bitch in updated form as well, as long as we're dreaming.

Perfect crime in the middle!
