Slash: Axl's letter refusing the HOF induction set a fire that made us play

Original GNR

If anything, Slash has more musical integrity than Axl at this point.

He sticks true to what he knows, and what he is good at, not chasing the popular fad of what is considered "in" at the time.

Axl on the other hand was chasing that Industrial/New Metal trend that started in the second half of the 90's because he wanted to be Trent Reznor. Hell, he even hired his guitarist.

That seems to be lost on alot of those that consider Axl this visionary. He is a trend chaser, and it is unbecoming of him.

Axl hasn't "pushed an envelope" in 20 years musically, he's just resorted to copying whatever is popular in an effort to stay relevant. His big problem is he waits so damned long to release his music the trend he was trying to fit in with passes him by, hence CD.

Copying whatever is popular? Right, because there are so many bands that release an album with songs that sound like "If The World" to "I.R.S." to "Prostitute". Yeah, those songs sound like someone "chasing an industrial/new metal trend".

Such astute observations are what make this board entertaining.

Don't you think Chinese Democracy could have had a better impact if released in 2001?

What does that have to do with anything in my post? Chinese Democracy is not an industrial record. The songs I mentioned are not industrial in any, way, shape or form. They are all on Chinese Democracy.

As far as impact, it's possible. It's impossible to know for sure.

Nope. I love the songs on it but it's not exactly radio friendly

I relate to what you're saying about wanting more, sure. I think that CD, however, has so much more going on in it than any of the ex members' stuff does. Well all know Slash isnt ever going to push the envelope. He's playing with a singer who played with Creed's ex members. Is that an accomplishment? How more generic can it get? Not to be mean, it's just that I dont feel like that's GNR.

Because it's not supposed to be GNR... nobody is expecting it to be. Slash has never tried to be anything more than a blues based hard rock guitarist, that's what hes know for and that's what his fans love about him. He's never tried to pass himself off as some kind of avant garde musician, and neither has Axl yet his most dedicated fans for some reason claim he's pushing the boundaries of modern music... lol. You want to talk generic, Axl has the Sixx AM guitar player playing lead, whats your point?

I dont think the band has been wasted talent. The album is fantastic. Their tours have been great because they all sound different and have shown clear progression. They've settled into a new lineup and they've got good rapport and an evolving sound. I get impatient too but I look forward to what the future holds. Your question about what is Axl trying to accomplish with this band - I guess we hafta wait and see what he does before we judge if it was any good or not!

5 talented musicians who recorded on that album jumped ship before it was even released, that's wasted talent. It's a solid album, but its one album. 14 songs that cost 13 million in 15 years.

I love Axl Rose, he's my all time favorite singer, and one of my all time favorite songwriters, but his inability to keep the ball rolling is a god damn shame.

I think having a generic lead singer makes the band's overall sound sucky, plain and simple, whereas having one guy you dont really love on guitar with two other guitarists doesnt automatically make the band itself sucky.

I'd take Chi Dem over every Slash, Duff, Izzy, and Steven solo work in a heartbeat. I'd take Physical Graffiti over every Nickelback album combined, wouldnt you?

Like I said, I relate to your frustration of having to wait wait wait all the time.

And also, I think Chi Dem is groundbreaking because I've never heard that proggy industrial sound coupled with blues and poppy stuff like Chi Dem does. Name somebody else that creates a song like Shackler's Revenge! The guitar talent, the sinister verses, the dance-y bridge with the high hat, the multi-tracked vocals in the chorus, high as hell, with those lyrics. NOBODY DOES THAT. How hard is that for people understand? Give GNR their due.

You're right Eu4ic about Shackler's being original

The abrasive electronics that scream out of nowhere and shut off in an instant

sinister verses

multi-tracked vocals especially on chorus

electronic dancy segments

Wait, am I describing Shackler's or Vessel by NIN. (I'm not even a big NIN fan so I'm sure there's even better examples that include more guitar)

Ok so you're being sarcastic. And you're saying SR sounds like NIN, particularly Vessel? That's hilarious. They sound nothing alike. Just because a song has some similar elements in the way we describe them doesnt mean they sound alike.

Bullshit!

It's not about chasing trends, it's about evolving muscially. I think that Axl wanted to try using some Industrial/ Nu Metal elements because he really liked it, the Jonathan Davis costume from 2002 was an overkill, ok, but he always said that he liked those artists so he probably wanted some of it in his own songs, it wasn't because it was the popular thing at the time. He added influences to his style, why is that such an issue? He wanted to be Trent Reznor? So what? Scott Ian said that he wanted to be Pete Townshend when he was younger, TBH, I've always wanted to be like Jerry Cantrell, my favorite artist, that's how influences work. Axl probably wanted to be like a lot of his earlier influences too. Just because you're an older rock star it doesn't mean you're not allowed to be influenced by the newer generations, that's a good way to reinvent yourself.

You call "sticking to the only thing he's good at" being true? Well, I call that being a coward!

People complain that rock sounds dated and boring nowadays, well, that's because of that stupid "just rock n' fn' roll" philosophy. It's amazing to see people's hates towards new shit: even the slightest change, like putting one or more strings on your guitar, which is nothing new, btw, or using a different material to build it (like the trussarts), will make the haters frown and cry. I still can't believe all the negative feedback the Firebird X (Gibson guitar) got. It's funny to see how rock fans want their favorite artists to follow the rules of rock and stick to the conventional way of "rocking".

Just imagine what would have happened if guys like Van Hallen and Hendrix wanted to stick to "what they knew" instead of pursuing new sounds.

If that were a real forum, I'd hope it was sepia toned.

Axl wanted to change the sound to a more Pearl Jam-ish style in the 90's. This was documented in interviews with Gilby/Slash etc.

Keep thinking about it because all you gonna see is Axl and The Replacements covering other people's material. That said, I will see Axl and his band in Mallorca while on vacation in Spain :book:

Fail. Cute attempt though...

PS i refuse to post in this thread anymore. Mods, i apologize if ive gotten of course.

I refuse to lower myself to the level of others in this thread. For I live in a reality of facts, where Guns N Roses is indisputably on tour. Yet where others fail to recognize this, and continue to hold on to dreams and fictions from 20 years ago.

Use your illusions, and let them take you where they may...

That's just silly considering most songs Axl plays on this tour are co- written by Slash and other former GNR members. So it should be allowed to mention him/ them in this section. As soon as Axl stops playing songs from those days, you have a point. But not at this moment.

You're getting technical. This section is for Guns N Roses. The unemployment section is down a few scrolls.
