On my phone the pic of member appears in the text. great read though. What I don't get is knowing Axl as well as they did and the territory, why they couldn't just deal with it like the current guys do. Just hang in there a support Axl.

the main point for me is that when they were having problems with Axl they all were on a load of drugs. and that's not something they factor into things much, apart from Duff. the current guys have their life together, accept Axl as he is. So you're joining GNR? I suggest thou take up heroin as a hobby.

That's when it becomes about being a paycheck. A lot of bands do suck it up and deal with each other, even if they don't like each other.

What I don't get is knowing Axl as well as they did and the territory, why they couldn't just deal with it like the current guys do. Just hang in there a support Axl.

From early interviews it seems like Axl wanted control of the band from the start. Sort of selfish of him, but it seems like that was his plan. He managed to get a higher percentage of royalties from AFD sales. The question is of course why didn't the old band members oppose this slow control taking from Axl's side? Steven confronted Axl's bullshit occasionally, but unfortunately disqualified himself from being a mediating factor by destroying himself with drugs and getting himself fired. Izzy tried to talk to Axl and get him to consider the band as more of a democracy rather than a dictatorship, without success, and left the band partly as a consequence. Slash and Duff, on the other hand, seems to just have let it happen. Duff even mentions that he expected the management to be supposed to control Axl, but it seems like the management on many cases supported Axl's acts. So instead of doing what they probably should have done, since they were part of the AFD lineup, Duff and Slash focused on drugs and booze and gradually allowed Axl to get into a domineering position where he called the shots. Newcomers like Gilby and Matt had little power without the clear support from Slash and Duff, and backing from management, and basically had their hands tied (Matt subsequently getting fired when he stood up for Slash). Why Slash and Duff didn't try to remain in power, is hard to say. They were addicts, yes, but Duff goes far to say that Axl's powertrip was one of the reasons he drank so much. Were they afraid to confront Axl and demand that he consult them when decisions were made? Were they afraid management would take Axl's side and that they, too, would be fired as a result? Did they realize that Axl's musical vision was a good one, and that it was a comfortable ride with him in control? Were they just spineless? I sort of believe the latter to be the case. I am not saying Axl is not at fault for what happened, but I believe what happened was according to his plan -- he always wanted to be the boss of the band, and Slash and Duff's inability to stand up for their rights enabled that to happen. Even today they seem afraid to deal with Axl, as evidenced by them not talking to Axl about playing at the HOF (Duff mentioned that he probably should be the man to rally the lineup, but that he just couldn't bother). Axl never wanted them to be pushed out of the band, though, he was really upset with Izzy leaving, a "betrayal" that made him lash out at Izzy numerous times, and causing his animosity towards Slash to this very day. That being said, he got what he wanted, a band where he is in total control, and it is really interesting to see that none of the current members have any problems with this or with Axl. Robin and Bucket presumably left because of a lack of productivity, not because of Axl being difficult to work with. But the current members came into the band with the clear understanding that this is Axl's band, not with any delusions about being equal, something Slash and Duff expected but never had the guts to demand.

So Robin has never made any public comments regarding his time in the band?

As far as I know, no, he has been very clear on not talking about his tenure in GN'R, but he has said he wishes the band members all the best.

but it seems like they never liked each other, is what I'm saying those quotes are from 91. it's just once they got rich enough they could quit. and they still claim to want a reunion when Axl hasn't really changed. he still goes on late and wants to do stuff his way.

It's just their idea of equal was to stop doing November Rain type stuff. which seemed to be Axl's thing. I think they overreacted to the contracts, who cares if Axl's a bit more. Given that they know what he was like. They say reunion this and that, but do they think Axl has changed?

There's reasons to do a reunion - I think if the members of a band have the ability to sing and play well, and have a new generation of fans, should reunite just for that reason alone.
