Axl's voice in 2012

Axl's voice form has been a controversial topic for a while. Ever since he blew our minds away back in 2010 with some incredible raspy vocals expectations were naturally very high for the beginning of 2011. Then the world was left in shock after the painful RIR 2011 performance. Since then, his vocals have been pretty much up & down but still a far-cry from 2010 excellence.

More recently in 2012 his vocals have been pretty much on pair with 2011 - maybe a bit more strenght in his voice but very little if any rasp at most songs other than in WTTJ...

BUT, if Axl's voice has been relatively consistent in 2011 & now in 2012 how one explains that in a particular show in "up close & personal tour" his vocals were mind-blowing once again - almost on pair with 2010 level!?

I'm reffering to the Philly show. I leave here a couple of vids that exemplify what apparently Axl still has got in voice but rarely "comes out". I'd love to know why he can deliver such raw vocal perfect performances and other times all we get is the infamous mickey mouse voice?

Explanations anyone?

He had cold and bronchittis in 2011. You should have seen BBF interview when he said that a cold can fuck up a whole tour if you dont take care of that - how can you cancel...uh...rock in rio? In 2012 he didnt have cold but not enough time to develop his raspy properly, but at the end of the tour he was pretty consistent. Now we will know for real whats up and his voice is already very strong and stronger than 2011 for sure.

He's got it.

My friend and I believe he's selecting which bits to put effort into, a la WTTJ, in order to conserve his voice which isn't as strong as it was.

Studio-wise, the guy could record anything he wanted. Live, he picks and chooses based on how he feels.

I'd agree with this as well. I saw him last week and his voice was very strong

Yes he seems to be selective. In Dublin he used alot of powerful rasp on KOHD and not on others. The only fault I can find with him onstage is that he doesn't use his power enough and is voice is buried at times but otherwise he was great overall. Amazing stage presence.

Studio is the only way to preserve your talent for the many generations to come, sure there are DVDs/videos of the concerts, but the studio is where the magic happens, get the hell back in there Axl, do what ever it takes

/end drunk rant

He probably doesn't have the same stamina as before, so he can't use the full raspy voice on the whole concert. He probably uses it on selected times but I'm sure sometimes he just can't. What I'm still not sure... is Mickey Mouse Axl on falsetto?

Live Axl sounded great at all 3 shows i saw in 2011/ 2012. I was listening to Japan shows from early 2009 and his voice is very similar to now. I think it comes down to his middle range is not as strong. I.e. PC but there in WTTJ. Ive noticed that the 2nd to last singalong in KOHD is the weakest of the 4 singalongs, IMO that is the best example of where Axl's voice stands today. In the end it may never be as strong as it once was and he may need to sing this way to conserve his voice. He can def turn it on when he needs to

I think the time is running out on the prospect for him to regather his 2010 form again

I think that shipped sailed towards the end of 2011. Didn't take him too long during the 2010 tour to reach his peak and you usually saw progress in his vocals every 2 or 3 shows. The 2011-2012 vocals have not improved as noticeably...

Not sure about falsetto. His mickey mouse voice is much more pronounced on youtube vids than at the show. Surprisingly it wasn't very noticeable from the seated section. Maybe it's more obv standing close up?Did you find that too?

I wanna still hold out hope for the chance of it coming back, but I think in the 2 years since 2010, it's been a realistic indication of it not coming back at all unfortunately. On the upside though, Axl isn't running around the stage a much as he did like 06-10, so he's not out of breath as much, but i think the '10 voice is goneskies

The "You're Crazy" that the OP posted is good by the Axl of today's standards but go back and watch this one and you just can't compare. He was so fucking incredible back then.

In Rock in Rio, I was relatively close to the audience. And I didn't notice it until maybe YCBM or KOHD. I could have sworn I had just witnessed a normal GnR concert. Not until I saw the reprise on TV that I saw it who bad Axl was. But... I still don't get it... is it falsetto or is it just Axl singing in a more comfortable way?

I don't think anyone really saw the 2010 voice coming in the first place. He didn't sound like that in 2006. There were great shows in 2006/2007, but just as many where he sounded like he did in 2011 for the majority of the show. And by that I don't mean he sounded bad, but he didn't have the power and rasp all the time in 2006. It was a marked improvement over 2002, but what he sounds like now is really what he sounded like the majority of the time in 2006. 2010 is the anomaly.

Not sure. I'd like to know too. Hopefully some singers here will answer! Too much oxygen giving him that helium affect maybe?!ha But he used to use it in the 80s I think. So standing or seating Mickey not obvious yet on yt it's everywhere. Don't get it ha!

There's video of a lot of songs from Sydney 2010, where GnR are performing to a near sold out stadium, and his voice is just raw and poweful and has range as well, maybe he needs to come back down under to reclaim that voice back again, something in the air ?

Axl was powering it through ALL the time in the 2010 tour, but that did reduce his range and for the CD stuff he was constantly having to find alternative way of doing the higher notes.

In this current tour I've noticed that he is starting to 'power through' again, something he rarely did in 2011. Take a listen to parts of Paradise City where the 2010 voice suddenly comes through (at the end of the 2nd chorus and also the end of the last main chorus with the two big notes)

I don't think its likely he'll get back to 2010 voice simply because I think he wants to conserve it, but I reckon he probably could match it 70-80% of the time if he really wanted to.

Also he sounds much fresher and vocally flexiable than he was during the previous legs of the tour, maybe thats him getting over his chest issues.

PS, I think he is just singing in a weaker pure headvoice, when he rasps hes using a certain amount of mixed voice, which is going to get harder to keep going as your voice ages and starts to wear around the edges, I'd have thought?

IMO age is not the real issue here - or how would one explain that in 01-02 his voice had virtually no rasp but lots of 'mickey mouse' then all the sudden in 06-07 his trademark rasp was back in full glory? Then again in 09 he had the rasp still in him, but his voice was somewhat weaker on the first gigs to be back to his best ever since the 90's. The issue is that he in less than a year he goes from full power raspy voice (2010) to something else much weaker and almost without rasp in 2011/2012 (most shows).

The 'saving his voice' theory is also a bit unbelievable to me - like he could perfectly use his power raspy voice during the WHOLE 2010 tour without any apparent issues, the decided to save his voice all the sudden just in case...naaaaa...

To me the explanation resides in a 'mystery' health issue that has probably affected his vocals during the off-period (2010-2011) in a strange way. There have been rumors of bronchitis and other, but the truth is that only Axl knows why his voice is like it is now....
