GN'R Plan Late Shows In Advance

Recommended Posts

It's well known that Axl is nocturnal. Coming on at 11:00pm for him is like somebody else coming on at 5:00 or 6:00. It is what it is, I really don't understand why people continue to make such a big deal about it.

The one issue that I do understand is getting home afterwards. In certain cities like Toronto, New York, London, there is 24-hour public transit so it's not a big deal. In some cities, however, trains or buses home stop at a certain time so people can be stranded. However, they can always take the car or get into a taxi.

Tickets should say start time 9:00pm. The opener comes on around 9 or 9:15, plays for an hour, GNR comes on around 11. Sippin a drink and feeling fine.

He can be as nocturnal as he wants. He should put on tickets "GnR will be on stage between 11:30 and midnight". He also needs to remember- most US venues cut off booze after 10PMish, most public transportation is ghandi after 1AMish, and we have to work in AM (well, in US alot of free loaders sucking on Govt teet....but I digress).

I could understand bitching on the UYI tour, but it's been 20 years.. when will people let go and accept that a GN'R show starts at 10:30/11. Make plans around that, if you can't, don't go. The band do their thing and if you like it you go, if you're offended you don't. This '2 hour wait' thing is bullshit as well, they've addressed this and moved Thin Lizzy up so there's an hour or so between them and Guns, pretty much standard turnover between support and main act.

Also if they really do have a source that's part of GN'R road crew, which shows has he been working for the past 20 years? They've been late on 90% of em, he can't surely only have started to notice and take offense now?

You are missing the point.

Kind of like telling a battered wife - "sorry hon, you didn't leave your husband after the first time he beat you up, so now you deserve whatever you get."

We all know that Axl doesn't care about his fan's time schedules. It's disrespectful and it sucks - but it is his band and he can do whatever he wants. We as fans have the right to choose if we want to put up with it or not. Most of us choose to do so.

BUT, this is a free country and we are allowed to voice our opinions if we disagree with something.

I went to a show last year and GnR started an hour after Loaded left the stage. It was great. And the band put on an amazing show.

Which would be awesome and the way it should be done but alas I think he'd rather half the people leave early once he already has their money than find out in advance and don't bother buying tickets. :shrugs:

I think it's a cultural thing. I notice it every time I go to Europe (I'm Canadian) and the U.S. Americans, and this is a generalization, are more use to socialization happening later than earlier. Most American cities have very late last call by-laws or none at all. In Europe, particularly England, most socialize at a much earlier hour. An example of which most bars cut off alcohol sales around 11:00 pm. I think us Canadians sit in the middle as we're influence by both our American neighbours and English lineage.

Essentially, British do not party or socialize as late as Americans do and hence suffer greater irritation when Axl decides to start shows later than what they're normally accustomed.

I think you're a little wide of the mark there buddy. We have 24 licencing for bars, clubs and stores over here so it depends where you go but in most cities or reasonable sized towns the bars and clubs will serve until 3am at least with a lot opening later. The issue isn't so much the late gig finishes or times people like to socialise, it's the fact that most of these reports are from gigs on a work night when people have to get home before public transport ends for the night. There's also the fact that we're a nation of drunks who won't take the car to a show if we can help it so we don't have to stay sober.

LOL, I was just gonna say something about this too. I'm American, have lived in Canada for 12 years, and have been to Europe on several different occasions, and I've never noticed these differences in "socializing hours." And clearly downzy has never been to spain.

EDIT: let me add that I've seen GNR in Canada on several occasions, and have still had issues with transit etc. shutting down before the show ends.

I must say that what he says fits in on Sweden though. At least where I live. During the week the town is completely empty on the evenings here. Barely anyone go out and drink on a weekday here. The pubs usually closes around 10-11 Sunday-Thursday here. It's a small town though, but every time I've been in America I've thought about how weird it felt that everything was open so late on weekdays as well. Not only in the big cities, but in small towns as well.

I have been through Spain several times (been to 40 countries) and yeah, there are vast differences within Europe so I apologize for the generalization. But from my time in London, I noticed a definite difference as to when people start drinking and going out compared to Americans. You won't run into as many drunks at 4pm in New York as you will in London. Again, this is from my own personal experience, but Londoners definitely party much earlier in the night than their American counterparts. Americans generally eat and drink much later in the night than what I experienced in London. Never been to Scotland so can't speak to what it's like there, but my time in Ireland and England presented me with stark difference between when people get together vs all my time traveling through the U.S., especially the major U.S. cities (New York, Boston, Chicago, Miami, Los Angeles, Vegas).

Again, not everywhere in Europe is the same. In Barcelona you don't even contemplate dinner until 10:00 - 11:00pm. I would imagine there might be less complaints about GNR start times in places like that.

Cheers,

Andrew

That and the venues wouldn't allow it. Would cut into their food and alcohol sales, especially since they generally have to stop selling booze much earlier than 11:30. If people knew GNR wasn't going to be on stage then, some would likely not go and others would likely arrive later. Venues do not like that.

Yeah, you're right! I guess the only viable solution in that case would be for Axl to pull his head out of his arse then?

Axl's a straight up liar..

Good point. Love this quote from Axl on TMS "“The crew were very supportive of me..." apparently not so much anymore. Actually they should just not show one day, then sit back and watch Axl's tantrum. And since he's a liar and "Slash lies" maybe they can now get along......?

I think there are two things you two are confusing: 1) preference to start late, and 2) starting even later than planned.

I think they made it very clear on the most recent US tour that the shows would start in the 10:30-11 pm range. If it starts later than that, that's another issue .

Would be a viable proposal/solution except he's yet to do that for 25+years, likely not going to start now.

What I find interesting is that every time GNR tours articles like this pop up. Which makes me confused about two things: 1) how is anyone still surprised by the late starts considering this gets reported every time GNR comes to a given town, 2) How is that GNR is still able to draw large audiences with the continued lack of respect for other people's time? You would think eventually these two questions would end up with the same conclusion: no one bothers to go to GNR shows except the diehards (like 20% of ticket buyers tops). Eventually these two elements have to have an effect, but after ten years of performing with the new lineup, they haven't.

This is just another illustration as to why Axl would never reform as an equal partnership with Slash, Duff, and Izzy. There's no way they would tolerate this behaviour now (not distracted/placated with booze/drugs/sex/fame). But guys under contract like the guys who perform under Guns N' Roses now certainly do if they want that contract to be honored.

Cheers,

Andrew

Yea because Slash is the golden standard of behavior.

Slash : Hey let's act butthurt and quit on the band because we're not playing boring blues jams that I like . Then I can bash Axl and start a new horrible band.

Izzy: Let's disappear before the start of a tour and not give anyone a heads up. (Love Izzy just proving my point)

Bruce Springsteen tickets always say 7:30. I have never seen the man take the stage before 8:15, and Springsteen fans know that unless you have a GA ticket, there is no sense showing up before 8. No one complains, we just know that's how The Boss works. If you know anything about GNR, it's that they start around 11pm. Why are we still surprised and/or giving a shit? That's when they start. If that's too late for you, don't go.

You can't see why people would be more tolerant of a late start at 8:15 as opposed to 11:15? Really?

Wow you're willfully idiotic. You obviously know that's not why Slash left the band and please point out what tour, hell, what show Izzy made the band late for?

I'm not talking about being late I'm talking about behavior in general dumbass.

Slash didn't like the direction of Guns which is half the reason he left no matter if he wants to admit it or not. Izzy took off and disappeared before the 92 tour started.

Source: http://www.classicrockmagazine.com/news/guns-nroses-late-show-was-planned-13-hours-in-advance/

----

The previous month, responding to criticism after being two hours late for their Rock in Rio show, a post on GnR’s Facebook page said: “Treat yourself don’t cheat yourself thinking you’re gonna go to school or work or whatever you ‘normally’ do the next day. This is Guns n’Roses and when the time is right the stage will ignite.”

I don't know why people can't figure this out / understand it. It's a rock show. If you're planning on a quiet night and an early evening to be bright eyed and busy tailed for work the next day - don't go! Instead don't buy a ticket, look at yourself in the mirror, and ask yourself when you became so LAME you can't spare a few hours in your life once in a while for yourself, as you're waking up the next morning at 6am to scoot off to work or school or whatever else you've been conditioned to do.

I was responding to the guy who said Slash and Izzy would never put up with Axl's behavior. Read the thread.
