classicrawker
Saw one this past week at the Boston HoB which was sadly half full.............The Cult...they have an excellent new album out, still put on a great show and Billy Duffy is still a guitar god......Not from the 80's but also saw Ted Nugent there last year and there was maybe 2-300 people in attendance...this is a man who once filled arenas.....very sad to see what he has become.......... Stiff Competition
Almost all of them. The rare cases are the bands that can still play amiptheatres/arenas and usually when they do it's because it's some sort of big package tour. People don't go to concerts like they used to anymore, it's too expensive.
Cosmo
80's hair metal/glam rock bands are the most obvious examples I can think of right now.

James Bond
Grand Funk Railroad is a band I like that comes to mind. The were pretty big in the 70s with some sold out tours and platinum albums, but nowadays things are pretty quiet for them. They mostly do casinos and smaller festivals. Granted, there's no Mark Farner, but still, quite different from their heyday.
classicrawker
GUNIf your talking about the Irish band GUN from the 80's I loved their first two albums but lost track of them after that.....I saw them at Toads Place in New Haven, CT just after their first album was released, after a Joe Satriani concert in a nearby theater, and their was literally less than 20 people watching the show....never understood why they never broke here as their albums were fantasticWere they an arena headliner in Europe back in the day? Their first album was 1989 I think but they were most prominent in the early-mid 90s. They are most well known for their cover of Word Up.They were pretty massive in parts of Europe and done well in UK. Dont think they done much or anything in the US. classicrawker
Mike Love's version of the Beach Boys were playing casinos before they reunited.Yeah but he has been doing this since the 70's and they have been basically a State Fair/ Casino band since the end of the 60's so it is not like it is a surprise or a step down..........that being said there is a great article in the latest Rolling Stone mag on the reunion......... bran
sadly too many good rock/metal bands are playing really small shows now. its the state of the scene in the us, where a lot of these bands still can play good sized venues in europe someone like king diamond in the us can play small shows but in europe he can play good sized venuesi agree with the cult such a shame they put out a kick ass album and everything but i never hear the songs on the radio but they will do their best to push shit on the radio really sad

What are some bands that experienced some level of popularity in the 80s or 90s that are now reduced to playing clubs or state/county fairs?slashWow, that's pretty low.True that Slash plays smaller venues. But ''Slash'' isn't a once popular band, he was part of a popular band. So there's no reason to name him. He's doing really well for a guitarist gone solo. Powerage5
Anvil is another very famous example pointed out by TMS.Anvil were never popular though Let's keep Slash out of this, okay? As its already been said, there's a difference between being a popular band and being in a popular band. It's bad enough that every topic in Discussion & News gets ruined by pointless bickering, and thats not about to happen in My World.Back on topic - Alice Cooper used to play arenas. Now he's in theaters. The venue in Syracuse I regularly see him in holds 600 people, and hasn't been sold out any year since 2008.
