Madridista
According to Steven Adler, when the band played on Farm Aid, he had no idea they were gonna play Down on the Farm. He says he'd never even heard the song before and that he was totally confused when Axl announced it. Now, watching his performance on this youtube video, it seems to me that he did a pretty good job. If he didn't know the song, how could he have guessed what the rhythm was like? Just curious Did he lie in his book? Edited June 11, 2012 by Madridista

Kill Devil Hill
I finished Steven's book last month. He said he knew the rhythm because Duff told him how fast it was gonna be. He also said he didn't know Civil War had a title yet.

dalsh327
For GNR to not play songs people knew at Farm Aid and pretty much left Adler out of the rehearsals was kind of messed up. It was such a throw under the bus moment as far as Adler went. Whatever happened at the Rolling Stones concerts was a catalyst in Axl taking things over, and this was really the beginning of Axl wielding power. Kill Devil Hill
I'm split on whether or not his story is true. On the one hand, Duff and Slash deny it and Steven was pretty messed up to begin with. On the other hand, this would kind of corroborate the story Scott told and kind of what Axl's said before iirc (that Slash and Duff kind of formed an alliance with themselves and left people out).I wouldn't be surprised in either direction. I don't think Axl was that instrumental in this if he was instrumental at all. I feel like he kind of went into seclusion and let nobody in the band in. rock4eva
I think they all seem to agree that someone would make a decision but when it came time to approach the person about the decision it was always left to one person to do the talking while the others just looked at the floor awkwardly - they weren't solid in backing each other up. Madridista
I mean I don't care how great a drummer you are, if you don't know a song, you just don't know it. It think it's bullshit too.
Johnny Drama
I believe Steven when he says he didn't know the song - the original band was just tight as fuck, an intangible force behind them. That being said, I'm sure Steven would have been given the opportunity to learn the song, but yes, Slash and Duff fucked Steven over IMO. He was their close buddy and they left him on the outer, a bigger fucking cut with them not only replacing him with Sorum, but also replacing him with Sorum as their drug/party buddy. Bards
He was so messed up at the time that it's not surprising.Yeah there's a difference between "he was so fucked up he didn't know the song" and "the evil band members conspired to make him, and by extension themselves look bad on a national stage".Slash, Duff, nor anyone else in GNR fucked Steven over. Steven fucked himself over by turning into an incoherent mess that escaped rehab a couple of dozen times until the band had no choice but to find someone that could hold their shit together. mrandyk
He knew the song going in. Whoever said he didn't, Steven or the guy that actually wrote the book, was wrong. He clearly knew that song.
