Guest Satanisk_Slakt
I'll actually answer again, since I think some people are misunderstanding what I was saying. I'm not saying that this is a diagnosis that doesn't exist. Obviously it does. I'm saying that it's extremely over diagnosed and when someone comes in claiming that all seven kids in one family has got ADD or ADHD... I mean, you hear it yourself if you think about it. Also, like Projected pointed out, she is now backtracking. It started out with 7 kids having it, then it was 5, then 3. I think the last one was that the two oldest had it. I'll leave it at that. Judge yourself.
The Linguini Occurrence
What those kids are doing is watching their older siblings acting like crazy shits and not being disciplined, and they are learning that this is acceptable and appropriate behavior in the household.I don't think it's fair to judge those particular kids without truly knowing the situation in that household, we can't and shouldn't make assumptions. However, it is 100% accurate to say that we are all a product of our environment. Kids observe behavior and then copy it, and they get away with as much as they are allowed to get away with. It's not just a coincidence that siblings tend to act alike and have many similarities, until they get older and other environments begin to impact their behavior.Like others have said, especially in the US it seems, there's been an over diagnosis, and children are being labled and medicated at such young ages. It allows parents to throw up their hands and say "see, wasn't our fault, little Johnny has a condition, has nothing to do with how we're raising him". I've seen some amazing results when parents take the time to focus on their children's particular needs, bring them to specialists who can teach them tips on how to focus and calm themselves down, change their diets, practice a more holistic approach. But that requires a lot of time and commitment on the part of those parents. Giving their kids a pill doesn't. It's an easy fix , but no one ever said being a parent should be easy. If you can't do everything possible for your children, it's irresponsible to have them.I agree 100% about pills, they are often an easy and lazy alternative to preventing or dealing with physical and mental health issues.Case in point: After sleeping over at a friend's house, I'm having breakfast with her and her parents. Her Dad cooks up a bunch of greasy, fatty strips of bacon. She says "Sorry Dad, I can't eat that because I have borderline high cholesterol."His response? "Don't worry about it, eat it. That's what cholesterol pills are for."

izzygirl
I completely agree with you, Projected. I will leave this now, because I feel like Chloe probably feel picked on and that wasn't my intention with question that statement. I tried to make general statements. Anyway, it was fun to see the forum males jump into her defence, which was entertaining and I made my first meme ever as well, so I had a good time. Projected
I have so much more to say on the subject. P4A basically summed it up. But I will not do it because obviously Chloe got a little hurt and this whole thread became shit.I never meant to hurt anybody, just state my opinion on the subject, like I always do.Back to the introducing shit... I am not pro medicine when a child is young and the brain is still developing. We are still not sure how this affects a child on the long term. But I don't necessarly critize the easy fix, but it should be the last choice and looking closely if it is really the only thing left.I never used medicine, I did traning, have a diet and try to live a regular life. although very difficult at times. But I am afraid medicine would change who I am.

Look, Chloe, I am honestly sorry if I hurt you. Believe me when I say that it wasn't my intention. Either way, let's go back on topic. I am S.S. I'm 24 years old. I live in a Swedish small town called Linköping. I have opinions about everything and I tend to always say it out loud. For good and for bad. But I am afraid medicine would change who I am.Same here. I had a severe anxiety issue several years ago, and I was dead set against taking meds for it. I worked hard at conquering it without them, and now it's no longer a problem. I'm not saying meds should never be used by anyone, I'm just saying meds should always be a LAST resort rather than a first one.

It wasn't so much what you said, but who you said it to it seems. The poster Chloe isn't some wilting flower, she can tell people to shut up and fuck off, so she can obviously stick up for herself. There's no doubt the condition exists, but factors such as medication, conditioning, discipline, diet and especially parenting are a very important part of that as well. You made valid points, and a majority of people agreed in theory at least.

But I am afraid medicine would change who I am.I agree, that's the main point. I have a friend whose doctor recommended meds for her 8 year old daughter, after only one visit. After a week she saw a big difference in her personality, seemed lethargic, was quiet but looked unhappy, etc. She was very uncomfortable with the change, it didn't feel like her daughter anymore. She decided to do some research, took her to a school that specializes in teaching the children and training parents with these conditions, a gluton free diet, exercise, etc., with amazing results. I just personally feel all other options should be exhausted before medication is even considered.edit: oops my bad Pro, didn't see your above post - Edited July 7, 2012 by Patience 4 Axl
