The James Bond Thread: RIP Robbie Coltrane

Never judge a film by it's trailer. The trailer only shows the best parts.

Prometheus begs to differ.

Fucking loved that trailer. Haven't seen the film though.

So I think the Bond girl is really cute.

See it if you get the chance, it's a great movie. It has way more elements of Alien than I'd expected, considering Ridley Scott continually denied it was a direct prequel for like 2 years. Indeed its not necessarily a prequel, but many questions unanswered in the Alien series are brought up in Prometheus.

Will do, I was never a fan of the sequels. I feel they screwed up the tone of the first movie.

Back on topic, I am curious about how good the new Bond girl is. Bond girls are either great or terrible.

Who are your favorite/least favorite Bond girls?

Favorite:

Honey

Domino

Tracey

Soilitaire (mostly because she is gorgeous)

Melina

Pam

Chinese Girl

Natalia

Vesper

Least favorite:

Jinx

Diamonds is fairly enjoyable, though its my least favorite Connery film. The pre-title sequence is horrible though. Awful editing. Good title song though and the rest of the film is fun.

Haha pre title sequence sucks so much.

What I hated most about Diamonds is how they acted like the events of OHMSS never happened. They only ever referenced it in For Your Eyes Only and Licence to Kill.

Dr. Blowjob

If Blofeld and Oddjob banged I guess you would get a Blow Job.

My favorite Bond girl has to be Tracy. Least favorite is definitely Jinx, mainly because of Halle Berry's horrid performance and the awful lines she had to say.

Not to mention she did a dive off a 500 foot cliff and not die.

Bumping this to include the new character posters for Skyfall.

The individuals can be found here:

Nothing earth shattering but they get the job done. These are better than the Quantum of Solace ones. This should also mean the final theatrical poster is not far away. I loved the teaser so here's hoping for something great.

I think the best Bond poster in recent years was the Casino Royale teaser with Craig at the poker table. Pure class.

I just watched LTK again. I feel like I underrated it quite a bit, just like Dalton as Bond. In fact, it was probably the best movie (so far) for an actor's last role as Bond. DAF was poor for Connery's status, I don't count OHMSS, AVTAK and DAD were two of the worst movies in the franchises history.

Hopefully whenever Craig decides to step down he goes out with a bang.

Part of that is probably because he had yet to run his course as Bond being that it was only his second film. I agree though, in retrospect it's definitely the best "final" Bond film for any of the actors.

It was just announced that it will be a playable mission in 007 Legends, so I'm excited to see how they handle it. Carey Lowell is doing the voice for Pam Bouvier too.

What was with the delay between LTK and Goldeneye? Did they have legal trouble, did the studio decide to take a break thinking Bond films won't profit since audiences clearly preferred R rated and slightly more realistic action films such as Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, Point Break, ect.

Just a bunch of law suits over who truly owned the rights to the franchise. Pre-production on GoldenEye was started with Dalton in mind as he was still under contract. When nothing was moving forward by early 1994 he was granted release from it.

Licence To Kill is also, if I had to guess, the primary reason why we haven't had a summer release for a Bond film since 1989. It pretty much bombed at the North American box office. Part of that was because of a last minute change in the title from Licence Revoked to Licence to Kill which disrupted the planned marketing campaign. The film also faced heavy competition and reviews weren't that great at the time, with many considering the film too much of a departure. I think Dalton was just ahead of his time, coming out of the Moore era especially.

Bond for the winter movie season has proven successful since GoldenEye, but I'd love to see a Bond summer blockbuster at some point.

It was legal problems. In retrospect I've read a lot of accounts that people couldn't picture Bond past the Cold War. I wasn't old enough so I couldn't tell you personally.

I do wonder though, was Goldeneye written with Dalton as Bond? That would've been interesting.

Awesome. I know OHMSS and Moonraker are two of the missions. Did they say any others yet?

Edit: I think they said there was gonna be 6 missions...wasn't there 6 Bond actors? I bet it's one level each.

I believe Goldeneye was written with Dalton in mind. Pierce was very serious in that film. The film was written to bring Bond in a post cold war world, even M called Bond "relic of the cold war" and a corrupt Russia is a perfect setting because Russia in the 90's was a shadow of the Soviet Union overrun by mafia and a weak government. After that they didn't seem to know what to do with themselves but 9/11 changed everything. Now they can use shadow organizations like they used to.

Dalton and Lazenby will forever be the Bonds that could have been the greatest.

Do you think it was due to deficiencies in their personal performances that they weren't? I suppose it's a bit of a cop-out to blame the audience because at the end of the day, surely the benchmark of a good film should be how much people enjoy it... but personally I find myself incredibly frustrated with popular opinion of Licence to Kill and Timothy Dalton's performance as Bond overall. He was stellar, and you still get the casual digs in from TV presenters and the like saying "Dalton was a bit rubbish" but NONE of them go on to actually criticise or even acknowledge what the main elements of his performance actually were...

Really looking forward to this. Proud to have relatives working on it too!

Nice! In what capacity?

Confirmed are Moonraker, OHMSS, Licence to Kill, Die Another Day, and Skyfall. It is indeed going to be one mission for each actor, with each mission being broken down into a few levels. I'm guessing either Goldfinger or You Only Live Twice for the Connery one. You Only Live Twice might translate better to a game (namely for the volcano battle) but I could see them going for Goldfinger being that it's the iconic Bond film.

Both have done for a number of years - main credits sort of thing. Won't say who mind.

I was hoping to use the contacts for the part of an extra - but have been too busy :(

Lazenby's problem was that he was not Sean Connery and the producers tried to make him copy Connery. They were able to get away with Bond getting married (not a fake marriage like You Only Live Twice), something people could not see Connery do. He did not think Bond would outlive the 60's so he turned down a seven film contract. The producers probably would have booted him anyway if the next film did not profit.

Dalton's case was different because times were changing. The Cold War was coming to a close, AIDS pandemic made the producers have Bond sleep with one woman in The Living Daylights and action films get edgier so they shook things up with LTK. Goldeneye celebrated the greatest of Bond set in the mid 90's. As I said before, setting in Post Cold War Russia in economic ruin, Russian mafia, corrupt political leaders, Bond looking back to the good old days. After that they didn't seem to know what to do. Guy wants to rule TV stations, another wants to take over South Korea. Now they can finally do shadow organizations based on Al Qaida and shit
