The James Bond Thread: RIP Robbie Coltrane

Stallone can return as Rocky because he basically owns the character. Bond is supposed to be mid to late 30's and his career ends until he is around 45. Moore looked good for his age so he was able to pull it off until For Your Eyes Only when his age started to show.

Plus Stallone isn't pretending that Rocky is still in his thirties - Rocky is an aging character. That's the big difference. With Moore they didn't age Bond. It's bizarre that he looked good in Octopussy (my favorite of the Moore films) but aged about twenty years by AVTAK. Even though Moore was older than Connery, he actually looked younger in LALD than Connery did in DAF.

Well like that people were complaining about Tom Cruise being Jack Reacher cause of his height, but for me he did an amazing job.

Height is different than age when it comes to Bond. Dan the Man is under 6 feet tall but still made a credible Bond. The problem is that Bond is a static age. The character should be no more than 40 because the whole "agent coming out of retirement" thing (the only way to justify a 65 year old Bond) has been done to death in movies. Obviously the actor will age but he needs to be passable as a 40 year old. Moore aged fine until after Octopussy, and Connery was bloated and grey in DAF therefore looking older than he actually was (only 41).

Realistically, Brosnan probably had another film or two in the tank but the producers took advantage of the fact that he was no longer under contract as a way to revamp the series and change direction. Unfair to Pierce perhaps but much needed after the DAD mess.

Brosnan looked and moved great in The November Man but it'd be wrong to bring him back as Bond and revert to the silliness of his films. Changing his characterization of Bond would do a disservice to his initial four films. Bringing him back for one film as an aged Bond would make no sense in the long run. Where's the new actor and new story arc? The series needs to keep moving forward to survive.

For the same reason, I find it silly that people on social media still throw Clive Owen's name (among others in the same bracket) into the mix for a new Bond. He's already 52 and we aren't expecting the next film until 2018-2019 (at which point - for that matter - Brosnan will be 67).

I do agree and understand what you are saying regarding For your eyes only, I did find it weird and clearly his age was showing and it just din't suit the bond image.

I guess im saying cause Brosnan is my fav bond. But I know he can pull it off.

I know they won't take Brosnan, so well Fassbender would be the perfect choice, he does have that thing in him which makes him a Bond. Loki will be weird as Bond.

Fassbender was my original top choice but I think the X-Men schedule rules him out. Realistically, with MGM's planned three/four year gaps, we need to look at an actor who will be 35-40 in 2019 if they want to get some mileage out of the star. Hiddleston will be, so he's probably the most realistic of the rumours. He can act and he's passionate about the franchise so those are both pluses and why I think he's a worthy successor to Craig.

I'm torn on Brosnan in general. He was Bond for me growing up, and the iconic production still of him for GoldenEye is the permanent image of Bond in my mind. That said, with the exception of GoldenEye, his films have not aged well. I loved DAD at the ripe old age of ten when it came out but now I can barely make it through it. TND reeks of nineties action cliches (they must have written it for Arnold), and TWINE doesn't know if it wants to be OHMSS or a sequel to TND.

I'm still listening to the score for Spectre. I know a decent amount of it is reused from Skyfall but gawd damn did Newman do a good job or what?! I hope he comes back even if Mendes won't.

While both of his scores have been excellent, I'm kind of ready for David Arnold to come back. My biggest complaint about Newman is that he seemed afraid to find his own voice. Arnold is a bit more experimental while staying true to the Barry sound. Newman played it so safe that he didn't even create his own arrangement of the Bond theme - he licensed David Arnold's from Casino Royale!

Female director? Great!

Female Bond? Fuck off.

I only say the second thing because Emilia Clarke has been trending today for saying she'd like to be Jane Bond. Her actual comments were a hypothetical dream scenario which is totally fine, but of course that sparked the usual "need more females in traditional male roles" types of comments.

That's the biggest difference between MyGNR and the Bond subreddit when it comes to opinions - we all like Newman, but reading the comments on Reddit you'd think Newman sodomized Fleming's corpse, they fucking hate him.

Fassbender is 39 and really not 'old' at all - he could do the role for ten years, particularly if the emphasis isn't on action and brutal stunt work. In addition, he seems to have some interesting ideas about playing Bond up his sleeve - he's said he wants to take the franchise back to when Bond was serving in a war. As for the X-Men franchise, it really is turning into a gang of turkeys at this point. Contracts or not, I don't see why he can't or won't have the time to do both Bond and Magneto, and a few Academy Award aimed movies once in a while. Hiddleston is a great Loki but Fassbender is the superior actor. Also, this might be quibbling about little things, but Hiddleston's face reminds me of someone who was born to play the Loki/Iago kind of character. Fassbender just looks more like a Bond then Hiddleston does.

I can't see why he's not the obvious choice and am really hoping that Barbara Broccoli surprises us all with this one and chooses him.

I don't necessarily disagree with anything you said, but I was going with the "worst case scenario" of the film not coming out until 2019. Fassbender will be 42. Same age that Brosnan started but that only gives him about three films before the big 5-0 with those planned gaps. Aside from Moore (or perhaps because of Moore), they've all been hesitant to continue past the age of 50. Even though Brosnan remained optimistic about the role in 2003/2004 he did note that he was aware of his age.

If they plan on using him they need to ditch the gaps idea and get going this year on a film for 2018. I had high hopes for Craig's longevity so I really want the next Bond to be around for more than four films.

Otherwise, Hiddleston is a safe "second choice" who I think will do just fine. At least both guys have the right voice. I still have trouble shaking Pierce's "whisper grunt" from my mind. Yes, of all things, I want Bond to sound right.

I can see Hiddleston bringing back some of the fun gags ala Moore but Fassbender would be awesome with some good old dry humor. For instance, "I don't know karate, but I know crazy' -

Snooped on the JB reddit today. Happy to see someone else pointed out how awesome Jon Hamm would've been as Bond (outside of the fact that he's American). ^_^

Apparently they might make a live-action movie of Archer and cast him

Speaking of James Bond (the poster), he looks pretty similar to Cary Grant. That would've been another interesting person playing Bond.
