The James Bond Thread: RIP Robbie Coltrane

James Bond

Octopussy, what a great Bond film. How can anyone dislike it? And Moore and Adams had such great chemistry, the seduction scene was done beautifully. He looked younger in this one so I assume he had some work done. It was paced in a way where I can forget about the silly plot but when it comes to disarming the bomb I couldn't get away, luckily it quickly ends after that.

Have to say it is probably top three in Moore films along with Live and Let Die and The Spy Who Loved Me.

Never Say Never Again is next.

Three posts in a row. You really want this thing to hit 100 pages.

Skyfall was the first thing I thought when I saw P5's thread too.

It's nice to have another Octopussy supporter! It's a great Bond film. Roger is at his best. People who criticize the film tend to only remember Bond dressing as a clown and dismiss the whole film. They must have fallen asleep during the rest. There's nothing wrong with the clown thing anyways. It was actually a pretty logical disguise. Easily my favorite Moore film in any event. It might even be the most fun Bond movie. Pure entertainment.

Good luck with NSNA. ;)

I heard sales for straight razors increased 400% thanks to a certain scene in Skyfall. Would explain Powerage's thread

That's actually what spurred me on to make the thread  Was watching Skyfall with a friend and we got talking about how boss it'd be to start straight shaving.

Never Say Never Again makes A View to a Kill look like Skyfall. Man, what a dud. That is probably the most boring Bond film ever. I don't even know where to begin. First off, Kim Basinger was a total miscast. She is neither beautiful or remotely interesting. The moment she killed Largo was just out of the blue. The writing was beyond awful, they just rushed and mashed everything together, especially the ending. No idea what was the purpose of the French chick but I guess they wanted her to tag along so she can die. The god awful editing.

This may be worse than Die Another Day.

So which Domino do you prefer? Kim Basinger or Claudine Auger?

Claudine all the way.

I agree with you on how boring it is. It's a shame because it starts off okay. The first hour or so is enjoyable and Connery has a few good lines. I do like the bit when he tricks the casino greeter into thinking he's holding a bomb. The last hour is beyond boring. Very dull. I've fallen asleep watching this movie more times then I can count. If you ever can't fall asleep at night, just put on this movie. Basinger sucked, Blofeld was okay, Largo was boring, and Fatima Blush is decent but horribly written. The ending is the worst in any Bond movie.

Edward Fox is a horrible M too. All his lectures to Bond sound like he's quoting Jim Carrey's Grinch.

I was going to say how horrible M was. What a fucking retard! Fatima Blush was beyond hot. Way better than Xena On The Top who's clearly a rip off. I like her almost as much as Fiona. Agreed, badly written but she was sexy. Fiona has a larger and nicer rack. Them together is my ultimate fantasy.

Before I go on making you guys uncomfortable, the film was pretty boring. If I wasn't in so much back pain I'd fall asleep. Did they just cast Connery and expect him to deliver the film? Were they even trying to take on Octopussy? Octopussy may not be the best written but it kept me awake and not just because of scantily claded women assaulting a palace, it was just a good movie.

Title song was shit. Klaus is a good actor but he was just a psycho. The other guy who played Largo was much more threatening.

Powerage, she liked that movie eh? I can't see why people say Lazenby was a bad actor when he could pull off the ending so well.

By all means, continue

Yea, she liked it...had mixed feelings about Lazenby though. She said he's the worst-dressed Bond, but in all fairness that's not all down to him, as Bond's fashion is essentially a by-product of the era. Absolutely agree on Lazenby. He ranks fifth best for me, only because I don't think it's exactly fair to judge him based on one film. It's like with Dalton - he had potential to equal Craig IMO, but we'll never know how far he could've gone based on 2 films...

Even I can admit I cried a bit at the end of OHMSS the first time. Only other Bond scene to make me tear up was the climax of Skyfall. I thought it was gonna turn out to be a happy ending when Craig cracked a one-liner, and then Judi collapses

The thing about Lazenby, he dressed badly (I think that is Sir Hilly's fault) but he pulled it off. We all know Bond is about style. The worse Bond's about that were Brosnan who as Lazenby said, wouldn't capture anyone's attention if he walked in a casino and Roger Moore after The Spy Who Loved Me when he started to get old. Not to be a homo but I think Dalton in The Living Daylights was the most handsome Bond. Maybe because there wasn't much else to look at. No offense to Kara, she was pretty but Talisa Soto more than made up for Dalton's lack of quality trim.

I think I've lost the emotional impact of OHMSS because I first saw it when I was six or seven so I didn't really get it at the time. I think Lazenby did a great job though. Even though it was rumored early into production that M would die in Skyfall, I started thinking otherwise after Mallory said she'd have to voluntarily retire. I thought "Okay, so she is leaving... they're just going to have her character retire."

It actually surprised me then at the end when she first shows she got shot as her and Kincade are moving through the tunnel. First time I've watched a Bond movie and felt that emotion at the end. I've grown up with Judi as M and that marked an end of an era in so many ways.

Here's a fun Bond trivia. In what movie did Roger Moore drive Aston Martin DB5?

Cannonball Run. What do I win?

Yes! Cannonball Run! Sorry you don't win anything but you can watch the movie on YouTube.

Yeah, I have heard the rumor too, I knew she was going to die. My reaction was like "Wow, first time I ever see M shoot someone and get killed."

Also liked her line "I fucked this up, didn't I?"

Watched A View to a Kill. Moore was actually pretty good. Obviously he got a facelift since he looked nearly ageless. Less wrinkles but you can see it all on his chin and neck. Have to hand it to him for doing seven films and being into every single one of them. Can't say that about Connery.

First "fuck" in a Bond film and it was delivered by Judi Dench. Now that is badass.

She probably swore more than any other Bond character, at least in the Craig movies if not the Brosnan ones. Sheriff Pepper did too, although his "fuck" gets muffled out by the boat in LALD.

I agree about Moore. He had a consistency with his performances in that he always looked like he was enjoying himself. Weird look in that film though. You're right, his face looks younger but his chin and neck look like the near 60 year old that he was. Add that to his perpetually surprised expression from the face lift, his hair being too light, and his overly tanned look and you've got one weird looking Bond.

He looked like he just got back from The Bahamas. Or some weird South American country that does cheap and discreet facelifts for celebrities. You know how old people are and the things they do to themselves to look younger. But where did the mole go?

So did Connery do NSNA just to spite Cubby? I mean he probably needed the pay but he joked on the Tonight Show that Cubby was the enemy of the new film.

Maybe they pulled his face so tight the mole just popped off. It's funny, Roger spends a bit of time joking about his mole in his autobiography but never mentions the lack of it later on. I guess he didn't want to admit to the bad facelift.

I think there were a lot of factors. Part was obviously money. I think part of him wanted to show Cubby that he was as important to Bond as he always said he was back when he wanted to become a partner, even though by this time Moore was very successful in the role. Also, I think Connery enjoyed the idea of being involved with the creation of the film and exploring the aging Bond. He had every intention of making a good film.

However, EON's lawyers put a stop to the original script when it strayed to far from the Thunderball novel. I would like to have read the original script to see what was intended before it became the mess that it is now.
