The James Bond Thread: RIP Robbie Coltrane

I think part of it is because it was actually written in the same time period (it came out in 1968) so it captures the appropriate feel without it being too forced. I don't think Gardner or Benson were trying to be Fleming necessarily, but their stories feel kind of distant or something. Benson's are enjoyable reads though. The Bond you picture from his novels is definitely the Brosnan Bond, which probably makes sense.

Which actor would you say comes close to Fleming's Bond? Craig? Dalton?

Dalton without a doubt in looks. Probably Connery or Craig in portrayal.

The actors who Fleming himself wanted as Bond were David Niven, Christopher Lee, and Richard Todd. That speaks to what exactly a 100% Fleming Bond would've looked and been like.

Looking back at box office predictions I haven't seen anyone predict Skyfall would hit $300 million and $800 million overseas totaly over $1,100,000,000. After the huge success of Mission Impossible Ghost Protocal, it seems people were ready for the next Bond film.

Most I ever seen someone give SKyfall is $850,000,000 worldwide.

I don't think anybody expected it to crack a billion. $850 million was what the studio predicted. Before Skyfall opened even BOM was only giving it about $600 million, saying it'll match Casino and Quantum but not likely do much more than that. Were they ever wrong.

They probably thought the film was going to be similar to CR and QoS. Dark, gritty and humorless. WOM was really good. I think it was the only good movie out at the time.

There was no real competition for a while. Once Twilight hype died down Skyfall jumped back to number one at the box office a good five weeks after its release.

It'll be interesting to see how Bond 24 does. It might very well ride off of Skyfall's success. I know many people who aren't Bond fans who saw Skyfall and loved it and want to see the next one.

As long as he maintains his physical shape I don't think his aging will be a problem. He already looked much older in Skyfall than Quantum despite it only being four years different, but as long as his age is worked into the story as it has been and he maintains his physical believability then he can easily be Bond into his fifties. Since he's not projected as the pretty boy Bond image I think he's the only actor thus far who could actually get away with aging well into the role.
