The James Bond Thread: RIP Robbie Coltrane

James Bond

Personally I'd give Craig one more outing and then have Fassbender take over. I can't think of anyone else right now who is better suited to the role. If they don't go with him I hope they pick him as a villain.

Craig has at least 2 more, his contract was renewed at some point. At the very least, we'll end up with 5 Craig movies. It's probably safe to assume he's being given an option for a 6th.

It all depends on how he feels at the time. Connery was 41 or 42 when he filmed "Diamonds are Forever" and said that the 5 years in between films kicked his ass. I could see him doing 3, it's easier for him to commit for 2, knowing how he feels right now. By the time he's 50, he might not. After how Skyfall did, they're going to throw more money at him. The money Connery got in 71 is going to be chump change.

You also have this. I could see them shooting the next two films at the same time. That might be the best thing to do, just to finish the trilogy off. http://moviesblog.mtv.com/2013/01/31/dragon-tattoo-sequel-daniel-craig/

Fassbender is my top choice too. He's aging well and will be the right age when Craig is done. Brosnan was 42 when he started so Fassbender will still be eligible even if Craig did a sixth film. The latest rumor regarding Craig's contract is that when they signed him for the next two it includes an option for a third.

It's dark, but I don't find it depressing-dark. Other than a couple cheese-factor moments in TLD and LTK, I find Dalton darker.

Me too. The tone of Dalton's films was more sombre, especially Licence to Kill.

I will still hold my argument that Casino Royale is more or less just a Brosnan film done right with the benefit of having a Fleming title and story. I can easily picture Brosnan in most of the film. Perhaps not with the believability of Craig but I always thought the construction site and airport chases felt like Brosnan leftovers. If you call it dark you might as well call OHMSS dark too.

I agree James Bond, The airport and construction site scene felt like they could have been in Brosnan films. Also the fuck that Bond is this indestructable force. Diving away from a moving truck after jumping from one truck and landing on pavement without getting hurt.

The scene when M gives him is mission after Solange's death is when it became more Craig. Especially when we meet Vesper when we get some humor.

Fassbender would be great, especially if they continue with the style they have now.

Maybe Richard Madden would be old enough when Fassbender gets old.

But EON doesn't always pick the fan favorites.

So is your opinion a fact?

Just something I'm guessing. You can't follow up what one considers the "best" film. The Dark Knight Rises is generally thought of as a lesser film than The Dark Knight. Thunderball is generally thought of a lesser film than Goldfinger. Both are all great films in their own right, but they followed utterly beloved and celebrated films and simply didn't live up, at least in the eyes of the public. That's what happens to the immediate followup to a massively loved film, IMO. I'm simply saying that while the next film will certainly be as commercially successful as Skyfall, I do not think it will be considered as good, even if it is great.

You Only Live Twice is a lesser film than Thunderball.

I think Connery's films from FRWL to Thunderball are the strongest trend in the series. They did not disappoint. I have perfected my top ten.

OHMSS

Skyfall

From Russia With Love

Goldfinger

Thunderball

The Spy Who Love Me

The Living Daylights

Licence to Kill

GoldenEye

Casino Royale

Goldfinger was basically Bond playing golf and not doing anything except getting captured more times than anyone can count. Goldfinger proves himself to be the best villain because he not only captures Bond but also keeps him alive so CIA can think he is still on the case. His biggest flaw that Pussy loves penis more than money which is odd because she is a total dyke.

Thunderball was pure epic. Nuclear warheads, ransom, a bad ass villain, two of the sexiest Bond girl ever. Only the underwater fight scene brought it down but it is no different than the Fort Knox battle. Or the spray scene. Neither have aged well.

Most lists I've scene Thunderball and Goldfinger have been competitive. More so than any Bond film. I favor the dark horse that is OHMSS.

Can't argue with that top 10 - very solid list, but not all my picks. My top 10:

1. Skyfall

2. Casino Royale

3. On Her Majesty's Secret Service

4. From Russia With Love

5. Thunderball

6. The Living Daylights

7. Goldfinger

8. Goldeneye

9. The Man With The Golden Gun

10. Licence To Kill

Agree re: Goldfinger vs. Thunderball. As far as Bond himself goes, Goldfinger is anything but an achievement. On the other hand, Thunderball is one of Bond's finest hours as an agent. That's why I rank Thunderball higher.

Never saw what was so special about Dr. No. The famous introduction, Ursula Andress in a bikini. Other than that it was nothing special.

From Russia with Love made some more money but it was mostly overlooked in favor of the bigger films that followed. People didn't want a Cold War drama. The biggest departure from the books is that the USSR is barely the enemy, actually they were more allies than foe. Spy Who Loved Me they joined forces to go after Stromberg. FYEO they were just going after the same goal. Octopussy was a renegade Soviet General and KGB was hunting him down.

But in time, people kept going back to it. It was the ultimate back to the basics film. The film they go to when they made YOLO, Moonraker or DAD.

Agreed P5. Thunderball was what made Bond a superhero.

I really wanted to like Die Another Day but it got too rediculous. Even more so than Moonraker. The invisible car was a stretch.

Fans debate when the film turn sour. I say it was Halle Berry's first scene. Some say the invisible car, many say it was when we got to the ice palace. We all agreed the lowest point was the wave surfing.

Suspension of disbelief is the only way to enjoy these films but it was stretched a bit too much.

Diamonds are Forever is in your top 10? Seriously?

That reminds me of the list with Die Another Day at #10.

I love it. It's fun. It's over the top. It's Connery's Bond in early '70s Vegas.

I suppose we'll have to agree to disagree. I find it extremely boring with a terrible script, an overweight/out of shape Connery (somehow he looked better in NSNA) and an awful ending. Other than Die Another Day I think this would be my least favorite Bond film.

As it's been said before, Die Another Day is actually a pretty good film until they get to Cuba. Then it turns to shit.
