Men Behind the Sun is a pretty fucked up watch too. Set in a japanese prisoner of war camp where they carry out loads of medical experiments on the POWs. It appears we have something else in common, a propensity for fucked up movies. I went through all the classic 70s ones like I Spit On Your Grave and Cannibal Holocaust, Clockwork Orange only for them to release them on DVD proper 10 years later, the fucking cunts! I think all this Saw/Hostel malarkey is a bit too sophisticated for my liking. Some of the low budget Eyetie stuff from the video nasties era was fucking great! I quite liked the update of I Spit on Your Grave to be fair, Hills Have Eyes remake was alright too. Edited August 2, 2012 by Dazey

Hostel was the fuckin' bollocks though.Out of interest, at the risk of derailing the thread somewhat, how do you feel about De Sade? Or more specifically his work and whether it's relevant as or fit to be described as literature? He reminds me of you somewhat, he was a filthy pervert with issues with the Catholic Church too Edited August 2, 2012 by sugaraylen

I mean it's not like it was the Beano or owt like is it? In fact fuck it, yeah, why not? Subject matter may not be the most pleasant but it doesn't make it invalid in any way does it?Nowt wrong wi' a bit of grot my boy! You ever read American Psycho? I mean yeah it's not got the same serious tone but some of the shit in there is worse than anything De Sade came up with. I don't think anybody would bat an eyelid if he was writing today but y'know it's the ones who push the boundaries at the time that are remembered. Dazey
Do you not feel perhaps that there are certain high fallutin notions behind what makes a piece of work literature and another just plain pornography?I tend to base that on which has mucky pictures in it! As a serious answer though it's a fairly simple definition to make I think and it's all about the response the author is aiming for. Your average bongo books are simply there for a quick 15 minute shuffle and back in the drawer under the bed. To qualify as lit it's got to say more than that which perversely (pun kinda intended) De Sade did by virtue of the time he was writing it in. The fact that he was making waves and challenging the status quo qualifies it with artistic merit as far as I see it. Dunno really, what do you reckon? You should read some of his stuff, it's pretty fuckin' mental but i think it makes some semblence of a point about the nature of Libertinism. Like myself (i presume, i've never really asked you now i think about it ) you're an athiest so...if there's no God and morality is a human construct then...ain't all bets off? What i like about it most is the idea that they banned it because it was inciteful as opposed to like, y'know, i remember reading once that the key problem that a lot of the upper folk had with it was it's ability to make the reader see the world different, that literally the words contained in that book could lead to like...close to hell on earth, i think thats an amazing amount of power for a book, that a person out there could possibly write something that could bring on something like that...or shake the establishment up to the point where they might consider the possibility. Guest Len B'stard
I think De Sade was a fucking genius, i really do. Mental and a proper sick fucker...but a genius also. I mean, he kinda sussed the importance of sexuality as like...a guiding thingie in our psyches, isnt that pretty much what Freud was lauded for years later?I think he understood more than the world around him understood. And i love people like that, the paradox of it all, the way we work in society we kind of like...there's nothing more unsettling to modern society than a nonce thats got a point, you know what i mean? You can't really let someone like him live out in the world and live free, going around imprisoning girls for 2 days and doing freaky sexual shit to them and fuckin', y'know, every housemaid he ever had done a bunk, claiming sexual mistreatment, you can't let a fucker like that walk the streets...but then to burn his works and try to neutralise his genius is also a crime. The overriding notion that nothing good or elevated can come from a truly sick fucker in the way De Sade was is actually a load of bollocks. He was a pervert and a sicko BUT his genius and his contribution to human history is intrinsically tied to his perversions and sickness, a difficult man to truly admire but i don't think he genius can really be denied, except by the squeamish and *stands up* by God, I am not of those Edited August 2, 2012 by sugaraylen

Gods Favourite
I know some people says it's not that good of a movie, but The Excorsism of Emily Rose is the only horror movie that actually had a real impact on me (yet). I've watched Salo and Cannibal Holocaust etc., but didn't really find those scary, more disturbing.
Projected
Watched "A Serbian Film".What a piece of shit movie. It's not even remotely scary. Just has a lot of disturbing images. It's not even interesting, just disgusting. Don't watch it. Shock value only.

Sounds like I need to read the works of this guy. I'm always interested in disturbed geniuses. Sounds pretty sick though. Oh well, today's society is pretty sick in it's own way. I doubt it'll phase me too much!
Black Sabbath
I really enjoyed The Woman In Black. Horror films don't really scare me, or make me chill or anything, but watching this movie in the dark, with decent speakers, it'll definitely get to you. Same with Insidious. I love that movie. Guest Sleeping Like An Angel
Wow thanks for all the suggestions. I have a lot to get through. I started watching The Fourth Kind all alone in bed last night and I had to turn it off mid way through. I will resume the rest of it asap though. That kind of thing freaks me out. It really depends on your inner fears. A friend of mine can't watch a zombie film without getting freaked out where as that doesn't bother me in the slightest. It's all relative I suppose. Georgy Zhukov
I think modern day horror movies either rely on gore or loud noises. I prefer my horror films with some atmosphere.Nosteratu (1922 and 1979)Dracula (1931)Frankenstien (1931)Rosemary's BabyThe ExorcistThe OmenThe Cabinet of Dr. CaligeriThe ThingThe Phantom of the Opera (1925)
