Working with family

I think it's incredible to be able to work with family, because it seems like very few ever work out, and a lot of times, they start accusing each other of stealing, taking work home with them, and with your entire family being that close, would seem like it is a recipe for disaster.

What do you think it is that made your family get along all these years, maintain the professionalism, and be able to put it aside when it comes time for family get togethers?

Delis are so common in New York, but in the 30s, during the depression, it seemed like people who ran delis were able to stay afloat and weather the hard times. I think everyone lost their shirts in the stock market crash, but for the most part, families banded together.

Did you ever hear any depression-era stories, and what motivated your family to move to California? I think that would be a great book, or a movie, in itself.

Its hard to keep things going these days the cost of the food keeps going up because of the high gas prices and there is really no room to raise menu prices. Insurance and other bills keep going up and then you have to deal with all the different family members wanting to do what they think is right about cutting some of the costs. There is also 150 employees that have to be dealt with and at the same time There are hundreds of new restaurants opening up near by and all kinds of internet sites that will bring food right to your door. With every year that goes by seams harder than the last to stay afloat. Right now I'm working on 40 new menu items that should help keep the people coming back. Great tasting items that they can't really get someplace else.

Because our food was so good and our prices so cheap is why we made it through the depression-era.

I understand though, working with family can be VERY DIFFICULT especially if you are adopted like me.

Fuck me, the poor cunts eh? Did they try to give you back or didn't they specify no mongs on the application?

Marc, did the Grove being built in 2002 help business? I know that's an odd question, but I've always wondered if it helped business on Fairfax. It certainly made a lot more traffic.

I think the Grove has helped. People get out of a 8 P.M. or 10 P.M. movie and want something to eat. By then the other places to eat are closed.

I'm not an owner just a family member but I do run the place and yes it keeps me very busy. As far as a huge fan, It's more like my friends were making great music so I started to document it knowing is was going to be something special. I guess you can say I was their first fan too.

Was that really necessary?
