Dizzy Reed

Recommended Posts

Marc,

I am not a huge Dizzy Reed fan. I think putting keyboards/piano on the majority of the UYI took away from the rawness of GNR. From the first time I saw Dizzy Reed on the GNR Wanted poster or the cover of Rolling Stone, I can't understand why they handed Dizzy GNR stardom on a silver platter. Why did they present him as a member of the band instead of a session player in the background? I am not sure how that benefited the marketing of the band nor the music. Do you feel Dizzy was overused in the UYI albums? Between that and Steven Adler being replaced, that was a lot of change to digest, not to mention then Gilby had to replace Izzy shortly thereafter.

Marc, I have a question about Dizzy myself. Was he ever in the army?

I think Dizzy helped the records. The music was different than AFD so it didn't hurt it, it gave it some texture. I don't think there would have been any room for him on AFD but there was on UYI. Because they were going to tour the shit out of those records it worked out having him join the band. As far as Matt coming in for Steven, That changed the sound and look of the band but Gilby coming in was fine for the image. By 1991 Izzy was not moving around that much so Gilby helped out in that department. The only difference is, it was cool to have Izzy up there playing the songs that he had a big part in writing. Also cool to see him singing the 2 songs that he did.

I pretty much agree with you on all counts. The UYIs are more classic rock records whereas AFD has a punk edge to it. You don't have a lot of bluesy-ness on AFD, that sort of Foghat-esque rock that's on UYI which is suited to having a keyboard or honky tonk piano tinkling in the background.

However with regard to Steven, I ask: How did his departure really effect the sound? I feel the songs would've been the same regardless whether he was in or not. And Alan Niven said that the band fearing he wouldn't be able to handle the material was a factor in his firing, besides the drugs...That he just couldn't grasp the more complex parts even when not high and that he refused to play them differently, the way the band wanted. Alan said Slash complained to him a lot about this and feels that THAT was the real reason Steven was fired--Because the band felt he could't or wouldn't be able to master the songs or play them as they wanted. The fact that he was totally messed up on drugs just seemed to help unify the band in firing him.

I agree on Gilby and wish he would've written a record with the band.

I think is Steven was sober at the time that he would have done fine with the music. The fact that he was not at all is why I think he was not able to keep a beat to the songs.

Did you watch Steven on Celeb Rehab? I wonder if that was what the band was having to deal with. He just seems to have this really dark side to him, in the videos and shows, he comes off as happy go lucky, but from reading his book and getting into serious drugs at a pretty young age, seemed like a powderkeg as much as Axl ever was.

Did GNR ever get into brawls with each other? I've only read about Steven and Axl getting into a fight. It seemed like Izzy was always getting in trouble, but it was outside the band. Same with Axl, but for a band who had a rep for violence (I think the audiences prob. got into fights more), there's little about them getting into fights with each other.
