Question about photo

It's pretty cool that you mentioned some of the landmarks in the book, some of these places get lost and forgotten once they close down or get demolished. Adler wrote about Astro Burger & Paramount being next door.

There's prob. places you remember riding your bike on that are now banks or condos. There's tons of rock history in Los Angeles, but very little of it winds up as a historic landmark. Whiskey or the Rainbow, I think they have plaques from the Hard Rock...

Has Huell Howser ever had Canters on his show? (would also be a good plug for Reckless Road, plus he used to interview rock bands).

Huell once did a 30 min special on Fairfax which turned out the whole thing was done at Canters. It was about 20 years ago.

That was taken in 2007 and it's where Pasha studio was

Thanks Marc, I probably should have inferred that since it was on the Pasha studio page. It would be very cool to have a book of "then and now" photos of buildings along the Sunset Strip. But I suppose taking pictures of buildings in the 1980s with the forethought of them being historic one day wasn't on too many minds and in LA especially they liked to tear down places and replace them with strip malls and such.

The Gardner studio surprises me because considering it was the "epi-center" of GN'R culture back in the early 80s there seem to be very few photos of the place. Robert John has a few in his book. Are there any pics of it in Reckless Road? Why so few pictures of the place? Can you describe your recollection of it to us? From what I gather it was part garage, part loft and part above-ground spider hole (lined with photos out of porn magazines) and the parking lot it sat on was their toilet (literally). What the heck did it smell like?

It didn't smell bad. It was just a small place where they could practice and a few of them would sleep there when they had no where else to sleep. the parties started getting out of hand at the end and the police were looking for them so they moved into Vicky's place for a few months till they got signed and then got a place of their own. Here is a photo of what is there now.

Marc, I can't thank you enough for these photos. I also just want to take a moment to thank you in general for all the photos you took of this band in the 1980s. Being 16 years old in 1985, I can remember back then when having a camera at a party or a school prom or any event with friends wasn't the usual thing to do. We didn't have cell phones w/cameras taking digital pics and lugging around a clunky camera and rolls of film was the last thing anybody wanted to do. And even if you did, you had 12 or 24 shots to take, that's all, so you chose wisely, which meant you missed a lot. And getting those used rolls of film to the local photoshop or drugstore for developing rarely happened. So, what you did back then by taking all those photos and keeping them is really remarkable and I don't think the younger fans completely understand how fortunate we are, as fans of early GN'R, to have them.

If you ever consider doing a group Guns N' Roses urban trek tour with a stop at Canters for lunch, let me know ! I can't think of a better tour guide than you ! Thank you again ! - Mary

  • 8 months later...

By the way as well as Behind the Music (a bit too obsessed with the drugs) I also watched the Biography channel documentary which featured, your good self. It was a better doc than the BTM one, more balanced. Pity they didn't obtain the sync rights though.
