Ian Brady 'may have revealed' Keith Bennett burial place

Moors Murderer Ian Brady may have revealed information about where one of his victims, 12-year-old Keith Bennett, is buried, detectives believe.

Police are investigating whether Brady gave details to his mental health advocate, Jackie Powell, during a visit to his psychiatric hospital.

Ms Powell was arrested in south Wales on suspicion of preventing the lawful burial of a body and has been bailed.

Brady and Myra Hindley murdered five children between 1963 and 1965.

They kidnapped, tortured and murdered the children, whose bodies were buried on Saddleworth Moor near Manchester.

Keith's is the only body never found.

He was abducted on his way to visit his grandmother in Manchester on 16 June 1964 and his mother Winnie Johnson, 78, has fought a long campaign to get Brady to reveal the location of her son's grave.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: "On 30 July 2012, Greater Manchester Police received information that led officers to believe that Ian Brady had recently given details of the location of Keith Bennett's body to one of his long-term visitors."

'Duty to investigate'

Martin Bottomley, from Greater Manchester Police's Major and Cold Case Crime Unit, said: "I want to be explicitly clear about this: Ian Brady has not revealed to police the location of Keith's body.

"What we are looking at is the possibility, and at this stage it is only a possibility, that he has written a letter to Keith's mum Winnie Johnson which was not to be opened until after his death.

"We do not know if this is true or simply a ruse but we clearly have a duty to investigate such information on behalf of Keith's family."

The police were alerted to the possibility of information about the location of Keith's remains by the makers of a documentary about Brady, who said Ms Powell had told them she had received letters from the killer, one of which was for Mrs Johnson.

The programme's editor Emma Cooper said after learning of the documents, she had informed police.

"No-one can verify the contents of the envelope and therefore what information it does or does not contain but given the enormity of the implications as suggested by Brady's letter, we felt we had a responsibility to inform the family via their family liaison officer," she said.

Keith Bennett's mother, who is now 78, has fought a long battle to find out where he is buried In a statement posted on a site dedicated to Keith, his brother Alan Bennett said that "until some definite information is found regarding Keith's whereabouts we do not want to raise our hopes too high at this stage".

"Nonetheless, it is a very important development," he added.

Brady, 74, was jailed for life in 1966 at Chester Assizes for the murders of Lesley Ann Downey, 10, John Kilbride, 12, and Edward Evans, 17.

He has spent the past 25 years at the high-security Ashworth Hospital in Merseyside and has been tube-fed since refusing food 12 years ago.

Hindley, who died in prison in November 2002, aged 60, was given a life sentence for the murders of Lesley Ann and Edward and for shielding Brady after John's murder.

In 1987 they admitted killing Keith and 16-year-old Pauline Reade, whose bodies had not been found. Both were taken back to Saddleworth Moor to help police find the remains of the missing victims but only Pauline's body was found.

The director of public prosecutions at the time decided prosecuting Brady and Hindley for the final two killings would not be in the public interest.

Police abandoned the hunt for Keith's body in 2009 and officers said they would need fresh evidence to resume the search.

'Proper family burial'

Greater Manchester Police said warrants were executed at Ashworth Hospital and an address in south Wales on Thursday and searches of both locations were continuing.

Last month Brady, who was born in Glasgow, was due to go before a mental health tribunal to consider his application to be transferred to a Scottish prison and be allowed to die. But it was postponed when he suffered a seizure.

Myra Hindley, Brady's lover and accomplice, died in prison in 2002 Last December, Mrs Johnson, from Longsight, Manchester, said she wanted to attend the planned hearing to face Brady, saying she had "never seen him face to face".

But in the days leading up to the tribunal, before it was called off, she said it would be too traumatic for her to attend.

Mrs Johnson's solicitor John Ainley said she was not aware of the new developments, but said his client had "always believed that Ian Brady knew where her son was buried".

"Her one and only desire is to give her son a proper family burial during her lifetime."

He added that he found it "difficult to believe this story is true, but if it is, she will be bitterly disappointed that after all the requests she has made to Brady that he has left it to this very late stage to provide information and even that information isn't readily available.

"I remain to be convinced - it seems rather late in the day and a strange turn of events to come to light at this time."

Can't fuckin believe it...after all these years His Mums been writing him letters for years...decades...since the 60s...and he told her that he would let little Keith rot...what a fucking monster, how the fuck can you do that..Brady gives me the fucking creeps...they say they tape recorded one of the killing, it's since been destroyed but apparently in it you can hear one of the little girls pleading for her life and to go home to her mum, apparently they had her naked and posing for photos and on that tape you can hear Myra Hindley going "oh just shut up, will you?"

If he sent a letter to Keith's Mum not to be opened until after his death do you think she wouldn't open it & read it? She owes him nothing, no loyalty, absolutely nothing. Of course she'd read it but I doubt the contents would be anything more than a final laugh from him.

'I will never forget that awful tape': Daily Mirror reporter recalls sheer terror of Ian Brady torture recording played in court

Sadistic Brady and Myra Hindley tape-recorded Lesley Ann Downey's pleas to go home to her mum “or I’ll get killed if I don’t”

It was 46 years ago but the sheer terror in Lesley Ann Downey's pleading voice is etched on those who heard it forever

For 17 minutes the last moments of ten-year-old Lesley Ann Downey’s life were played out on tape to the hushed courtroom at Chester Assizes where Ian Brady and Myra Hindley stood trial for their appalling crimes in 1966.

The sadistic killers had lured the trusting little girl from a Manchester fairground on Boxing Day 1964 back to their home in Hattersley where they stripped her, tied her up and killed her.

They tape recorded her pleas to go home to her mum “or I’ll get killed if I don’t. Honest to God.”

Then Daily Mirror crime reporter Brian Crowther, now 79, covered the trial.

He recalls: “There was utter silence as we listened to the little girl pleading.

“I had covered lots of big trials involving all sorts of killers but I had never seen grown men cry before as they did listening to Lesley.

“Policemen walked out of court because they could not bear it anymore. No-one who heard that tape could ever escape from the memory.

“Lesley was in an awful mess, she was in absolute terror and you could hear it in her voice.”

Hindley was heard threatening to hit Lesley Ann if she didn’t shut up.

"The little girl was heard crying, 'I must tell you summat, please take your hands off me a minute, please . . . please Mummy, please . . . it hurts me, I want to see Mummy, honest to God . . . please God, help me ...leave me please, help me, will you . . . I’ve got to go because I’m going out with my mamma.”

Said Brian: “I remember that the Ray Conniff Singers could be heard in the background of the tape singing The Little Drummer Boy while Lesley sobbed.

“For years afterwards, when it played on a jukebox at Christmas, you would see journalists or policemen you were drinking with walk out of the pub.

“Sometimes they came back in when it finished, other times they went home. It left a deep scar on all of us.

“The two least bothered people of all on the courtroom were Brady and Hindley.

“They were sat behind bullet-proof glass that was put up around the dock because there were fears someone would try to kill them.

“But they were completely unconcerned with what was going on around them.

"They just exchanged looks with each other every day for the six weeks they were on trial.

“They did not care about the evidence and did not appear to be listening to it.

"It is a trait I noticed in a lot of serial killers whose trials I covered.

“Hindley was very hard looking, not pretty but there was a sense that she had been corrupted by Brady.

"Meeting him changed her life and I think in the end she became more evil than him.

“I did background on Brady up in Glasgow and all people could remember was how he ill-treated everyone and everything around him.

“He liked torturing animals and he also picked on a little boy in his class who was in a wheelchair. He kept tipping him over and did not care if he hurt him.

“You could see Brady was like that by the way he acted in court. All he was interested in was Myra and she in him. No one else mattered to them.

“It was her brother-in-law David Smith who turned them in to police after he witnessed Edward Evans being killed. Brady axed the boy to death.

“I interviewed Smith and he told me how they got rid of the body.

"‘They wrapped Edward up like a rag doll’ he kept repeating. That was all a human life was to them.

“The trial touched the whole nation. It was all anyone could talk about for months because it somehow changed everything.

“Until then no one thought a man could be that cruel to children. It was even more inconceivable that a woman would help him.

“They truly were evil.”

That is so shocking. We all fucking whinge and feel sorry for ourselves when shitty things happen to us and this reminds you that as long as you never have to experience something like this, we've got nothing to complain about.

This story reminds me of Ivan Milatt, the Australian serial killer who murdered 7 people horrifically in the bush. Milat's nephew, thinking his uncle was 'cool' imitated him by murdering a school friend at the same location and recorded the whole thing. The victims parents were forced during the trial to listen to the audio of their son being murdered and my heart just broke to see what they had to go through.

Just saw the news, amazing that we were only talking about her last night (my time). I saw a tv movie about this event & read books over the years - hope the Mum did read any letter she was given. I never go to my boys' grave but at least I know where they are if I do feel the need.

Yes Ivan Milat is a true monster, he laughed when he heard about his nephew killing a schoolfriend in the Belangalo State forest. The father of that boy was on telly not long ago after the trial & he'll never get that recording out of his mind.

Wow Lenny (aww, I remember when we used to call you Frankie and thought you were from Brooklyn ), interesting timing with this story. I didn't really know much about this before the thread. Hard to put into words how sad it all is.

Shame about the mom passing and never getting her closure. It's over for her now though, and I suppose if people believe in these sort of things, I guess you can hope that she has finally reunited with her little girl again.

I can't hope for something i know to be impossible. The human propensity for believing or hoping or wishing for the fairytale is a beautiful thing but every single episode of life has shown me, in the few years i been alive that there is no great cosmic moral equaliser, whether that be a God or whatever entity or energy one chooses to invest in, the fact is, in the real world, murderers get away with it, not always but they do get away with it. What goes around doesn't always come around, there is no such thing as karma, shit is just fuckin' random and without conscience.

Sometimes evil wins...this is one of those cases.

Sadly yes there are....They really can be that devoid of feelings...I've watched and read a lot on serial killers...They are so mentally damaged, from birth, their brains are fucked. They are literally unable to see you or me as anything but objects. Think of the way you or I view a table or a book or something meaningless...That's how serial killers view people and animals. They get off on death, on possessing others and controlling others using torture, violence and murder. They in essence view themselves as Gods, in a way, in that a God can take away life. But one can never truly hope to understand the inner workings of a serial killer...But from what I've read, serial killers DO replay their murders in their heads if in jail. It's their way of possessing their victim even beyond death. It's like a fantasy for them. That's how serial killers start off--with fantasies. Fantasies of violence. And they reach a pitch until the sociopath is completely consumed and obsessed with and driven by the fantasy, acts on it and kills. And with each kill, the fantasy becomes more intense, more complex...And each victim's murder becomes more intense or drawn out. Serial killers never stop killing...The initial fantasies consume them. Even if they take a "break" from killing for years like the BTK killer, they HAVE to start again. If they can't kill more people, they just hold on to the memories of their past murders and relive them in their mind, replay them. It makes them feel powerful in doing so.

The only way to stop a serial killer from killing is to catch them, kill them, or hope they meet with death before they can kill more. They are basically predators pretending to be human.
