GonzoThesaurus
It is nearly impossible for myself, and probably 90% of posters here to imagine the kind of impact that AFD had.. imagine being a part of something that affects millions, has an imapact on so many. Kids that feel an emptiness and suddenly hear a visceral sound, a voice, a guitar, a bass, drumming, a consturction of lyrical phrases (ie songwriting, ie, Izzy) that sounds real.. that fills that hole in your chest. What I'm referring to is the impact of what the 5 orginal GNR guys did with AFD. They made an album that spoke to people on a sublime level, but it wasn't an airy-fairy "we are all one" acid head kind of thing. It was violent, it was agressive. It was, and is, an ugly album. Addiction, obsession, paranoia, misogyny, desperation. All summed up in Axls otherwordly screams and "singing" (on that note, can you really call Axl's vocals "singing"? it sounds to me more like anguished screams put to a rhythm.. at least in the AFD songs) and also Slash's blues, desperately trying to.. prove something. His soulfulness, maybe? It seems Slash was striving for authenticity.. that was his goal. And he undoubtedly achieved that goal in GNR, whether he knows it or not. Steven was the naive one, always. "I'm in a rock band!" "O Wow, my bandmates have come up with some amazing songs, they are amazing!".. Never acknowledging his own part in the chemistry of the band.. he put his bandmates on a pedestel, thought they were "above him". Really sad.. he was a part of it! AFD wouldn't be AFD without him! Duff is the pure one. It seems like he had no agenda in GNR. He was just a force.. synchronicity lead him to Axl Slash Izzy n Steve, and he is interesting because has leanred from the rare experience of being an instumental part of a world-reknowned rock band. Izzy is the one that is complex, in my opinion. He's the one that conflicts with the chemistry of all the AFD members of Gnr. He is a fucking contradiction.. he contributed to the beauty of AFD, but at the same time he was/'is always saying that he wants to be niche he "never wanted GNR to get this big", to be down to earth.. when the sheer power of GNR's songs, the sheer emotional power, - THAT HE CONTRIBUTED TO! - is/was so forceful & powerful that he would be foolish to think that the things that his band had created, wouldn't affect people. And Izzy is no fool! So there's the contradiction.. to me. He "didn't want Guns to be big", yet he was a part of the powerful, violent insane, VISCERAL, emotional songs of AFD. And yet he claims he "didn't want Guns to get this big"?

Gagarin
If you check out Izzy's solo stuff, some of his songs are really good - they just...like... like something. Although I'm not sure what bits Axl added to Izzy's songs as far as lyrics or melody hooks, or what exactly Slash added with guitars on every song, I know sometimes is solo songs only feel like 3/4 complete. That's just my take. But if you took away that 3/4, then it really would be hard to make up for it! Edited August 17, 2012 by Gagarin
dalsh327
What would drive someone to quit a band that were as big as they were? It HAD to be bad. It's kind of like having this awesome career where you make a lot of money, but at the same time, there's so much pressure coming at you that you just want to say "fuck it" and leave, because you had a significant amount of money saved up and could venture on your own and be comfortable. And other things.Slash was also. And heroine. Axl was late or irritable at the most inopportune times from the stress.Izzy was trying to stay clean. That's my take. He hasn't written a book yet. It's like maybe he figured it this way - either trying to stay clean would kill him, or a relapse from trying to cope from the stress would kill him, or the stress would kill him, or he'd be killed in a riot. Meanwhile, he could go home and live beyond anything he could have imagined as a kid and play guitar. Indiana, of all places. Easy to live there when you're rich. Easy to live there when you're rich.It wasn't just Izzy going back to Indiana, Paul Tobias and Dave Lank had also gone back, and were trying to get Mank Rage off the ground. Supposedly Axl was producing demos, or the sessions fell apart? We also have to take into account Izzy living in LA from 1979-1991 and how long it took to make money in the band. We sort of know Axl's friendship with them, but not Izzy's. Edited August 18, 2012 by dalsh327

Easy to live there when you're rich.I thought the final straw for Izzy, who was also battling a massive drug addiction, was when Axl showed up late for a show and then walked off stage and refused to return. So he played a couple more dates and quit the band.At weren't slash, Duff and Izzy all had relatively "good" places at that time with their addictions? I think Axl's erratic behavior shouldn't be down played as to why he left. Showing up late, diva behavior, mad about adler being fired. Lots of reasons. Still sucks he walked out on the band though.
