Axl n' Bucket at an Allman Brothers gig, 2004

Was browsing reddit when I came across this guy's comment (I'm the guy who asks him when it was):

The Story.

Did a quick Google search, there was an Allman Brothers gig at the Beacon Theatre in March 2004 (also one in March 2003). Anyone else ever hear rumours of Axl wanting to get Derek Trucks in the band? Don't really see why he would be seeking out a new guitarist when he still had Finck, Bucket, and Fortus. Seems to me he just wanted to go to a cool gig with Bucket.

Or he was out of the band and axl was trying to get him back.

I doubt that, Buckethead seems to have made it hard to reach him in any case (that was Axl's main complaint in the statement made regarding Bucket's leaving). While the story of the gig seems pretty believable to me, the only part that I find hard to believe is being told that the guy next to Axl is Buckethead, this guy's friend was probably just guessing.

There's also this story that ties into Derek and Axl.

Cool, I'd forgotten about that story.

I'm figuring Bucket wasn't at the gig, and Axl was scouting for a new guitarist. The timeframe fits that theory better, Bucket quit officially on 17th March, gig was 23rd March. Then again, Axl may have just wanted to see the Allman Brothers Band play :P I doubt he was still scouting by October 2006 (the date of that blog you posted) since Bumble was already in the band by May.

It's fun trying to be a GN'R historian :D

It's possible he was hanging with Bucket at the gig even if he officially quit.

He prob. does go to the Roxy to check out bands and go to On the Rox if he wants to talk to them.

Derek Trucks was one of the names being thrown around back in '06 as Bucket's replacement. Ironically, my barber at the time, jammed with guys that jammed with Derek, and I mentioned the rumor to him and he said "I don't ever see that happening. Ever."...

Axl at Derek Trucks gig, Feb 2006 (this is the one where he has drinks after with that band from the blog above).

Axl at Allman Brothers gig, March 2006 (after Bucket leaving).

Letter from Del, saying Trucks is friends with Axl, went to see Trucks at Clapton gig in Oct 2006.

Could just be a big fan of the guy, though I could see why he'd be courting him for a spot in G N' R: the guy's young and talented and would also bring a bluesy vibe to the band. I can also see why Trucks would turn down a spot, since G N' R's pretty much a world away from the Allman Brothers/Derek Trucks Band stuff, and he doesn't really have the stage presence you'd expect from a G N' R guitarist.

Someone wrote in the Allmans forum he was sitting at a table for 6, another one wrote he was sitting in the second row. He prob. went to more than one show in NYC. The thing about NYC is Axl completely blends in when he wants to.

There was a mention of someone hassling him at an ABB show and he left.

I an a big fan of the Allman Brothers and saw them recently here in Massachusetts and they were brilliant. That being said I can't ever see Derek Trucks playing in NuGuns. He is an amazing guitar player but he does not play that type of music and is very mellow on stage. One of the most unlikely rumours I have heard...

yeah Derek doesn't fit into GNR style, however, it doesn't mean that he wouldn't be perfect for a song or two as a special guest

say, 'Since I've Been Loving You' or sth

I can imagine the solo - Derek is hell of a player

and Axl love covers so it could work out - unfortunately, there is circa 1% chance for that

Derek is a fantastic player, I saw him play with Clapton back in 2007 and it was fantastic. He would not fit GNR at all as he is more of a southern rock player with an emphasis on slide guitar but he is one of the best young dudes out there right now

That setlist was heavy on Derek and the Dominoes.

Axl and Derek prob. met pre-Susan. He was playing on stage as far back as 92-93, so who knows when they first met. Axl recorded in a lot of studios, met a lot of musicians.

Buckethead's Hand Puppet Says Goodbye To Guns N' Roses

The eccentric musician, who wears a fried-chicken bucket on his noggin and talks only through a hand puppet, has walked out before but has always returned to the fold. This time, however, it looks permanent. At the end of last year, Buckethead became fed up with Guns' inability to complete an album or tour and stopped working with them, his manager said.

Seems Bucket quit on Axl atleast once prior to quiting altogether.

They mention Manager and Hand Puppet. Does that mean Bucket's Manager is a Hand Puppet ? :D
