to start with Hot Rocks which has most of the hits

http://www.amazon.com/Hot-Rocks-1964-1971-Rolling-Stones/dp/B00006EXDM/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1345681816&sr=1-1&keywords=rolling+stones

and for live Get Yer Ya Ya's out

http://www.amazon.com/Ya-Yas-Rolling-Stones-Concert-Anniversary/dp/B002NOAF9W/ref=sr_1_2?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1345681893&sr=1-2&keywords=rolling+stones+get+yer+ya+yas+out

for individual albums I recommend these

1. Beggars Banquet

2. Let it Bleed

3. Sticky Fingers

4. Exile on Main Street

then continue on listening to the rest of the 70's albums

I highly recommend the Stones archive downloads with 73 Brussels and 75 L.A. well worth the money and the 81 Hampton show also being excellent...............................Sigh.......I wish Axl would do something like this..............

and research them here

Yeah, I agree on Hot Rocks, or you could go with The Singles Collection. Just an awesome 3 CD set. Then dive into the albums. I usually want to hear complete albums rather than compilations, but the Stones have so much material that listening to compilations is a good start.

Hot Rocks and The Singles Collection go to about '71 I think, so from there I'd dive into the highly regarded 70's material in chronological order. Then you might want to loop back to the '60s stuff if you really dig the Stones at that point.

I'd start with Sticky Fingers, move on to Beggar's Banquet and then Let it Bleed.

After that I'd take Aftermath and then Exile On The Main St.

Just start with a compilation such as The Singles Collection or Forty Licks.

If you want specific albums:

- Of Our Heads

- Aftermath

- Beggers Banquet

- Let It Bleed

- Sticky Fingers

- Exile On Main St.

Exile is amazing, but not a good place to start imo.

Between the Buttons

It's Only Rock 'n Roll

Decent, but by far not their best.

Their Satanic Majesties Request

Goats Head Soup

Mediocre at best.

so I keep seeing beggar's banquet, some girls, sticky fingers, and let it bleed. Thanks guys, I'll check those out

Yeah, that's probably the best idea. As a beginner I'd even skip Banquet.

If you don't like Some Girls, Let It Bleed and Sticky Fingers you probably won't like the band.

I would have started with 40 Licks.

I've always heard Tattoo You was their last good album.

Neither statement is true. Undercover and Dirty Work were significantly weaker than the rest of their work but everything since Steel Wheels has been quality music.

One album? Sticky Fingers.

Want to know the Stones history? Go through these songs. All of them should be on You Tube, some of them are solo.

Not Fade Away /I Wanna Be Your Man/ You Better Move On/ It's All Over Now/ Time Is On My Side/ Heart of Stone/ Little Red Rooster/ Andrew's Blues (funny bootleg)/ The Last Time/ Play with Fire/ I'm Free/ Satisfaction/Get Off Of My Cloud/Spider and the Fly/ Blue Turns to Grey/ Mothers Little Helper/ I Don't Know the Reason Why/ Lady Jane/ Under My Thumb/ Paint It Black/Out Of Time/ Stupid Girl/ Connection/ Ruby Tuesday/ Backstreet Girl/ Let's Spend the Night Together/ Back Street Girl/Have You Seen Your Mother Baby Standing in the Shadow/Dandelion/ We Love You/ She's A Rainbow/2000 Light Years from Home/ 2000 Man/Citadel

Child of the Moon/ Street Fighting Man/ Sympathy for the Devil/ No Expectations/Stray Cat Blues (live version, Ya Yas)/Jigsaw Puzzle/ Factory Girl/ Salt of the Earth (either original or Guns n Stones or both, but throw that one towards Steel Wheels)/Blood Red Wine/ Jumpin Jack Flash/ Country Honk and Honky Tonk Women (like them back to back)/ Gimme Shelter/Love in Vain/ Live With Me (live version, take your pick)/Let It Bleed/ Midnight Rambler (live version's great but if you want to keep it short, studio version's fine)/ You Got the Silver (a snippet of the Jagger version, then the regular one)/ Monkey Man/ You Can't Always Get What You Want (edit out the intro)/Memo to Turner/ Brown Sugar/ Sway/Wild Horses/ Can't You Hear Me Knockin/ Bitch/ Sister Morphine/Dead Flowers/Moonlight Mile/Cocksucker Blues/I Don't Know Why I Love You (Stevie Wonder cover)/Jiving Sister Fanny

Rocks Off/Tumbling Dice/Sweet Virginia/Torn and Frayed/ Loving Cup (version with Jack White's good too)/Ventilator Blues/Stop Breaking Down/ Let It Loose/ Happy (live version) / Shine a Light/ All Down the Line/Soul Survivor/ Pass the Wine/ Angie/Heartbreaker/Starfucker/ Dancing With Mr D/ Silver Train/Winter/Drift Away(cover)/ Too Many Cooks/ Aint Too Proud To Beg/It's Only Rock and Roll/ Dance Little Sister/Time Waits for No One/ Fingerprint File

Crazy Mama/Hot Stuff/Memory Motel/Cherry Oh Baby/Hand of Fate/Miss You/Beast of Burden/Shattered/Some Girls/Before they Make Me Run (live version)/Respectable/ We Had It All/Claudine/ Dance (part 1)/Send it to Me/ She's So Cold/ Emotional Rescue/All About You/ Start Me Up/Hang Fire/Little T&A/Waiting on a Friend/Neighbours/Worried About You/Undercover/She Was Hot/Wanna Hold You/Tie You Up/Just Another Night/State of Shock/One Hit/Harlem Shuffle/ Had It with You/Fight/Sleep Tonight/Take It So Hard/You Don't Move Me/Locked Away

Mixed Emotions/Rock and a Hard Place/Almost Hear You Sigh/Slipping Away/Live Wire/Wicked As It Seems/ That Feel (Tom Waits & Keith) / Don't Tear Me Up/ Love Is Strong/You Got Me Rocking/Out Of Tears/Blinded By Rainbows/Thru and Thru/Anybody Seen My Baby/Out of Control/Saint of Me/Memory Motel (with Dave Matthews)/ Joy/ Old Habits Die Hard/ Rough Justice/ Streets of Love/Rain Fall Down/ God Gave Me Everything/ Champagne and Reefer (w/Buddy Guy)/ Stuck in a Moment (Mick w/ U2)/ Follow the River/Plundered My Soul/No Spare Parts

The Stones need Mick Taylor. They've never done this song live with him, and it sucks when they've done it without him. Keith and Ronnie couldn't cut it.

There are few great tracks on on Voodoo Lounge,Bridges to Babylon and A Bigger Bang but as cohesive work those albums are weak the less talked about Steel Wheels,Undercover and Dirty Work the better

They should still be given a listen, even if they're not the best the Stones had to offer at the time.

What the hell are you guys talking about? Steel Wheels and Voodoo Lounge are very good, Bridges to Babylon and A Bigger Bang are great! There are more noteworthy songs on either of them than on many of their older ones.

What I can't get into by them is the first two albums (and Satanic Majesties, for obvious reasons, as in it's crap). There are a handful of songs on them that are good but for the most part they seem to lack any sort of identity. Out of Our Heads is when the party gets started.
