izzydoezit
Why did they choose to do a bunch of covers of mostly punk songs. It's not like their main influence was punk (Duff excluded). Classic rock was what influenced them the most. I would expect to see some covers from Led Zep, Aerosmith etc. And why have mostly unknown songs too? I truly didn't get how it was thought out. ColdHeartBreaker
It's not like their main influence was punk I disagree, I think it's obviously where a lot of their roots lie, you can tell just by how they'd talk about the bands and songs they covered, just how much they loved them. I think it was a great idea, wish more bands did that sort of thing.

The songs they chose were mostly fine, but the original spirit of the songs was lost. The edge, the intent, idk... whatever was working, the core of what made those songs great (the ones that were at least)It just wasn't there. bacardimayne
The Duff songs on TSI are terrible. No idea how they thought it was a good idea.

Plus it was one of the biggest bands in the world backed by a major label covering punk songs in a nice studio that were largely recorded and mastered DIY, they never would have had the same raw intensity. I still enjoy it for what it is though, and am very thankful it got me into some cool bands like Dead Boys, Rocket From The Tombs, UK Subs, The Damned, and Johnny Thunders

jellyzero
Most of TSI was recorded with Izzy during the UYI sessions. It was planned as an EP to hold fans over between the UYI albums and the next album (like 'Lies' did before) but as the tour went on they worked out a few more songs ('Since I Don't Have You') and eventually had a full album. Gilby replaced Izzy's guitar parts on the tracks recorded during the UYI sessions ('New Rose', 'Down On The Farm', etc).
Guest Satanisk_Slakt
TSI >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Chinese democracyI couldn't agree more. TSI is actually pretty good. I mean, it's got many great songs. A few really shitty ones too, but overall it's far superior to CD.

Crash Diet
They recorded an Iggy & Stooges song, but it didn't make on the album (not Raw Power)A very few people heard that cover.

vaida
I love the whole Guns N'Roses adding the raw power they had to a bunch of punk songs. They made average songs sound so buch better.

Aryan Bowie doing "visions of swastikas in my head" come off better than Iggy doing it), Siouxie's Passenger, Joan Jett's cover of I Wanna Be Your Dog's good (Uncle Tupelo does it a little bit country and makes it work), Grace Jones Nightclubbing. Weirdest - Chrissie Hynde and Tom Jones singing Lust for Life. Madonna bringing him to the Rock Hall was the coolest thing she's ever done. Take someone long overdue for an induction and have them perform? Prob. one of the greatest moments of the Rock Hall ever - the Stooges covering Madonna! Prob. one of the greatest moments of the Rock Hall ever - the Stooges covering Madonna!China Girl by Bowie hasn't got that same clunky mechanical pseudo chinese thing to it, plus it sounds more sincere and part of a greater tapestry in the context of The Idiot album i.e. the sort of Neu! influenced Iggy on sedatives feel that songs like Baby and Dum Dum Boys have, Siouxsie doing The Passenger sounds like a crap pop take on genius, limp and like there wasn't a lot of thought put into it, Joan Jett doing I Wannabe Your Dog is just disgraceful, just, again, like there's not a lot of thought put into it. Just a lot of polish and nothing besides. Now Grace Jones doing Nightclubbing, i like that, thats different, messing up where the accents are at, messing with the pace and making a kind of uber-adrogynous take on it but nothing comparable to the original. At least the most respectable of those you cited though, if respectable can be construed as being a compliment to an Iggy song Respectable as in does some kinda justice to the original.Listen to the Iggy produced Raw Power album and then come tell me those songs can be equalled or surpassed, they just can't. Closest anyone came to covering Iggy well?http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHFb58NJQi4
