sweetness Posted September 24, 2012 Posted September 24, 2012 Most of the videos you see of GNR live performances from the 80s-mid 90's, Slash is pretty hit or miss. Even at best he was pretty damn sloppy, and though I still love to watch those videos and fully appreciate the raw intensity of the whole package GNR was in that period, from a purely guitar playing standpoint the live performance was usually kinda middle of the road.. with some highlights of course (one of those being the Double Talkin Jive solo, he always tore that one apart)But today Slash fucking SHREDS. I didn't expect him to suck or anything, but not gunna lie I was pretty blown away by how much he cleaned up his playing during faster tempos. I saw him the other night in Detroit and I don't think he missed a single note, for a professional musician who's job it is to play well every night you should expect that, but considering where he's come from I think it's worth noting. So glad he kicked his old habits and can focus on his craft, he really is better than ever these days.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N7BlB90MVT0
The Glow Inc. Posted September 24, 2012 Posted September 24, 2012 His playing is at an all time high while his inspiration is at an all time low.
sweetness Posted September 24, 2012 Author Posted September 24, 2012 (edited) I wouldn't say that, Apocalyptic Love rocks. The music isn't groundbreaking but it's fun and features some great riffs and solos Edited September 24, 2012 by sweetness
vaida Posted September 24, 2012 Posted September 24, 2012 Slash is playing very well these days.. Better then his UYI days for sure..
SONOFABITCH Posted September 24, 2012 Posted September 24, 2012 Slash has put out way more great rock songs than Axl since the breakup.
izzydoezit Posted September 24, 2012 Posted September 24, 2012 His playing is at an all time high while his inspiration is at an all time low.I completely agree with u. Slash has not topped or created anything near as good and consistent since his GnR days. Although same can be said for all the ex members and including Axl. no you are wrong. In each and every album he has epic songs. Except maybe his first solo album. All other albums have songs comparable to the best songs with GNR.
moreblack Posted September 24, 2012 Posted September 24, 2012 He's playing out of his skin these days. Sober and practice makes a much better player.
Free Bird Posted September 25, 2012 Posted September 25, 2012 Nobody has to like Slash's output and songwriting (I do), but his live skills are so much better these days, thats for sure.
sweetness Posted September 25, 2012 Author Posted September 25, 2012 really? I like his albums its just his guitar work is no where near as grand or cool like his GnR days. Its almost like every album he takes out theres 1 or 2 songs that are incredible but when he was in GnR he has albums worth of great kickass guitar playing. It's pretty simple, the songs don't have that same "it" factor because they aren't GNR songs written with Izzy, Duff, and Axl. That's the only thing separating Slash's solo work from his work in GNR, it's not like he's any less of the creative force he has always been, he's just on his own now. To expect his solo material to be on par with GNR's body of work is to say that Slash was the only important member in GNR, which was NOT the case. You could say the same thing about any former member including AxlThat said I think technically and musically his soloing and riffage has improved a lot since the GNR days, his use of modes and key changes is much sharper especially on the Snakepit records. In VR and with Myles he's taken it a bit easier but he still delivers some damn good tunes, they just can't be compared to GNR because GNR was a very special melting pot of talent where the sum was much greater than it's parts

I do agree that his live playing is perfect, its still gritty and just hits every note; very refined.Yes, I agree. 1 or 2 songs are fantastic in each album. Snakepit 1 though is GNR-caliber from beginning to end. Same with Contraband Edited September 25, 2012 by izzydoezit
