Dizzy Reed Interview: "I hope the next record doesn't take us another 10 years". Unsure how much longer the "band" will survive.

At the beginning of the new millennium, only Rose and keyboardist Darren Arthur “Dizzy” Reed remained in the band. Iconic guitarist Saul “Slash” Hudson and band co-founder and guitarist Izzy Stradlin were long gone along with the storm.

When the band released Chinese Democracy, its latest album, in 2008, the chemistry was over and the album was critically considered as a failure despite its long preparation.

This year Rose and the band started a nostalgia tour to relive their hits and Indonesia, which was overlooked during their heyday, is the only Southeast Asian stop. Despite sounding outdated amid the present-day soulful rock from Kings of Leon and Coldplay and toned-down grunge champion Foo Fighters, GN’R surely still has its fans — now mostly in their 40s — who will still come to the show, maybe minus their boots, chain and studs.

Scheduled to perform in Senayan Sports Stadium, Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Dec. 15, the legendary band promised to give their best in a three-hour show, delivering all hits, including “November Rain” and “Sweet Child O’ Mine”.

“Our goal is just to get our music out to everybody. Yes, it’s long overdue [the concert in Indonesia], but we’re going to come down there, and we’ll do our best to not disappoint you guys,” Dizzy Reed, currently responsible for keyboard, piano, percussion and backing vocals in the band, told The Jakarta Post during a recent phone interview.

Reed joined the band in February 1990 as pianist as well as backing vocals and produced the single Civil War in May 1993.

The current lineup consists of Rose, Reed, bassist Thomas “Tommy” Eugene Stinson, another keyboardist Chris Pitman, guitarists Richard Fortus, Ron “Bumblefoot” Blumenthal, Daren Jay “DJ” Ashba and drummer Frank Ferrer.

Over a possible new record, Reed said that the band was in the early stages with each member sharing his ideas.

“We had a lot of stuff that we haven’t finished from the past, some great songs… I just hope it won’t take us to another 10 years,” he said.

Despite numerous changes in lineup as well as drug abuse along the way, Reed said that the band had grown into a better form, although he was not sure whether the band would survive another 20 years.

“Sometimes you just have to take things one step at a time. It’s good to have a plan and place, and so I hope we’re still rocking 20 years from now. I hope that we don’t look bad doing it.”

I'm sure there are already finished songs. If most of the band already recorded a bunch of songs and Axl hasn't had the words for it, the band has no idea what he's been writing and where he's been singing.

You'd think this type of information would be communicated between members of a "band".

I see it being more of a UYI kind of wait.

So, by your calculation, they will be releasing the album next month?

I think 5 years after when the tour started in 2009? But 10 years would be sooner than how long CD took. Let's look at 2020 as a ballpark year.

Take note: "We're coming to rock your faces off" morphs into "we'll try our best to not disappoint you" when a band is over the hill.

Compared to Guns N'Roses past history, Chinese Democracy is it's biggest failure. Axl's the member behind that failure. He knows it, we know it, the music industry knows it. I guess for the timebeing, living off the past, and touring and touring and touring is the safe bet. Another album might spell another nail in the coffin.

So hard to take anybody seriously after they've said they like those three bands :P

Still though, things aren't looking good and I can't believe the guys wanna be apart of this band anymore. I wonder what it's like when they hang out with Axl, do you think they ever ask him avout the next move or do they just talk about sallad and wait for him to bring it up?

Not hating or anything, I'd most definitly go see them again if they come by my neck of the woods, but it's very, very interesting trying to figure out how these guys work and look at themselves.

Dizzy Reed is a real fucking hero in my books. The biggest hero and best guy to survive the gingerheaded troubled dreamer, Axl Rose. fuckin big props to him and his measured response about the next album is a nice one, because it feels more real than the overt optimism of Dj Ashba or "we havent gotten in a room together to record" bumblefoot.

Lol I'm sure the fact that the next best gig for Dizzy other than being in Guns was pouring beers at the local pub had nothing to do with him 'surviving' anything....

So what? He is a rock dude for christ's sake. not every rock guy is supposed to cave in, die a huge death and be reborn into a goddamn dead-inside Gucci wearing corporate columnist, like Duff did. Of people who were around in the illusions days Dizzy is one of the very few who has managed either not to become a goddamn parody version of his younger self, or die a small death and land some respectable bullshit job or whatever.

Rock dudes pushing their late 30's- to 40's etc., who didn't make, in my town, are either doped up&on the dole and going down hard, or holding down working class jobs that are hard and don't pay a whole lot. Is that a bad thing.

Ummm I would hardly call Dizzy a rock dude... The guy was given a break by Axl because he was going to be out on his ass. This was when Guns were already massive anyway. He was never a 'rock dude'. I could not care less what Duff has become or anything like that, but to call Dizzy a hero simply because Axl took sympathy to his situation is ludicrous to me. Each to their own though, I'm not here to put down others. We have both expressed our opinions.
