‘It was like an 80s’ jukebox playing’

It's not everyday that a band you grew up listening to comes to your City and plays a three-hour long set.

Expectedly, the concert by the legendary American rock band, ‘Guns N’ Roses’, was the best thing to have happened to thousands of fans, who eagerly made their way to Bhartiya City to experience their music live on Friday.

After a short but powerful opening set by local rock band, ‘Thermal and a Quarter’, frontman Axl Rose took the stage, followed by guitarists Ron ‘Bumblefoot’ Thal, DJ Ashba and Richard Fortus, bassist Tommy Stinson, drummer Frank Ferrer and keyboardist Chris Pitman.

The band started their set with ‘Chinese Democracy’, which was all that was needed to get the crowd’s adrenaline pumping! A lot of their popular songs were performed — ‘Welcome to the Jungle’, ‘Estranged’, ‘Don’t Cry’, ‘November Rain’, ‘Sweet Child o’ Mine’, ‘Civil War’ and ‘Paradise City’ among others, which the audience sung along with.

Interestingly, a lot of covers were also belted out, with the likes of ‘Knockin' on Heaven's Door’ (Bob Dylan), ‘The Seeker’ (The Who), ‘Don’t Let It Bring You Down’ (Neil Young) and ‘Another Brick in the Wall part 2’ (Pink Floyd) to name a few.

At some point or the other, each of the musicians also got to perform a solo, with Richard Fortus’ guitar solo of ‘Blacklight Jesus of Transylvania’, Dizzy Reed’s piano solo to Led Zeppelin’s ‘No Quarter’ or even DJ Ashba’a guitar solo of ‘Ballad of Death’.

Over 25,000 people sang and enjoyed the music of the yesteryears, with most of them leaving with a smile on their face. “It was one of the longest international performances I’ve seen in India and it was worth the money to watch a band like ‘Guns N’ Roses’ live for three hours. I had thought I’d mind the fact that ‘Slash’ was missing. But DJ Ashba

totally rocked it. It was a mesmerising evening!” shares Gaurav N, an audience member.

According to Arnav Vishwasrao, who attended the concert, it was a well-arranged set list.

“The one thing they got right was putting the classics between the not-so-popular songs. Putting all of them back-to-back wouldn’t have worked.” He adds, “The concert was like an 80s’ jukebox playing. It was quite a good turnout, contrary to what I’d expected.”

But the one thing that seemed to tick off a lot of people was the layout. The platinum pass holders were further away from the stage than the cheaper gold pass holders, who were only a few feet away from the band. The worst off were the silver pass holders, who practically had to see the entire show in the screen.

For a person who has grown up loving the band, the show was a dream come true. Been on another GnR mailing list since close to 15 years now.

It was extremely emotional for me even though Axl's voice was unfortunately all over the place. I was worried sick the show wouldn't start at all, or that Axl would get pissed off seeing the obligatory guy in a Slash t-shirt. There was also a fool wearing a Kurt Cobain t-shirt for some reason...

All in all, I'm still pumped from the show. I travelled from Bombay (Mumbai) to Bangalore to see them. Flew back, & saw them again last night in Bombay.

Setlist was almost the same as the Vegas gigs. 32 tracks, around 2 1/2 hours, & definitely very very momerable.

How was the Bombay show? Axl's vocals were way better & he seemed more at ease. There was more crowd interaction and Axl dedicated KOHD to the Bombay, India & Freddie Mercury!

I have a few moments from both shows, where I was able to grab Axl's attention (I was in the 2nd row in Bangalore, 1st row in Bombay).

Unforgetable memories.

Ah, Gaurav...Rakshit's long time archenemy has finally returned.

The first thing on here that literally made me laugh out loud in quite some time

Lol, thanks to Glow - I was hoping that someone would respond in that vein :D

Yep - I was hoping that Bangalore would get to see them last. Axl always does better with a show or two under his belt.

But, I'm totally with you on the sentiment. Even sitting here thousands of miles away, I feel emotional just knowing that Axl is rocking the crowds back home and that the loyal faithful are finally getting to see Guns' Live. Good on you mate for doing both B'lore and Mumbai. I would have done Bangalore and Delhi if I was there.

We do need to hear music from Ashba, but as he has been doing all over the world, he continues to keep the standards high for Guns' live shows. A girl posted on this Facebook after the Mumbai show -

When half of the crowd was feeling bad because slash isn't with Gn'R now .. Dj Ashba , just blew everyone's mind !

Didn't really miss slash .. #truestory ..

Dj Ashba .. Hatsoff !

Love you ! ♥

Ashba>>> Slash.

Fact

First of all, that's false and you know it.

Second, until Ashba records and plays new music with GN'R, he will always just be a cover artist. I don't see how a person playing other people's music is better than a artist who has put out 2 albums in the last 4 years.

That may be false, but the last argument has as much coherence as the "how can anyone play a song better than the original?". You may check Elvis Presley and "All Along The Watchtower" by Hendrix for further references.

As much as I dislike Schwag, n' Dj's Personal knowledge of the guitar / gear, and how sometimes how his bends sound like nails on a chalk board. The dude does write, and record a lot. It's not his fault that he hasn't released material with Guns, he sent Axl 12 demos and has written two original solo spots for the live gigs. Sixx AM, I like a lot of their songs and they have an amazing vocalist. DJ Ashba can write, I don't understand what he hears in some of his own bends tho. He also tries to stay as true to Slash as he technically can.

But on the GNR Front he will never be a better GNR Guitarist than Slash. And his tone sucks. They should give the guys Slash's Appetite Amp and Appetite Reproduction Guitar. I'd love to see how that would sound.
