Ex GNR Manager Azoff resigns from Live Nation

Seeing Azoff had to do with GNR in the past, I thought this is worth sharing:

Quote

Live Nation Entertainment Chairman Irving Azoff has resigned from the company, effective immediately.

65-year old Azoff was contracted to the company until mid-2014 but chose the last day of 2012 to make his departure public.

As Chairman of Live Nation, Azoff merged Live Nation and Ticketmaster to make the biggest music company in the world. 'After successfully overseeing the integration of Live Nation and Ticketmaster over the past two years, my job here is done. We put together the leading company across concert promotion, ticketing, sponsorship and artist management and delivered the great results promised by the merger,' said Mr. Azoff. 'I especially enjoyed my time with my partner Michael Rapino, and he has demonstrated the ability to lead this company from now on. I'm looking forward to returning to the entrepreneurial world and continuing to work with all my friends and colleagues at Live Nation.'

What the article failed to report, was that Azoff has chosen to resume and focus more on his honorary role of the Sith in the life of Axl Rose. With Slash reprising Darth Vader.

Well he didnt do anything to promote CD. He just sold it to Best Buy.

And on november 234rd, 2008, I went to best buy in rochester ny and bought the record...which was some of the most incredible music ive ever heard...and i hate axl to this day, because the guy didnt ever wanna get beta off of his dick, and go promote the record. Just flop her off, and go do an interview or a video for music that the world wasn't ready for.

Instead, I've got nothing but coming into forums where Slash wins the war, people talk about the break up and try to convince me that they know more when they have never even gottten an autograph, and still, no new music. That record was incredible, and now two years ago we've went from people going nuts wanting to hear this shit in person, to complaining that its a joke of a record because axl wont release new music. So what position should i take ehhh mods?

I want to see Johnny Cochran defend Axl. I'm out of ideas. But man, Slash is as fake as a prissy whiny bitch who just has to tan today or else she'll be moody til, ur next date.

Take note randy and bonic bitch...

Azzof supposedly failed to book a US tour to support the release of CD (they booked the Asia tour themselves), the label had already told Axl not to do a video, they tried to make one themselves but there were no wheels to get it out there, you have to pay to get things on the radio or mtv. So I guess Axl was awol bcos he was too pissed to talk to the media about the botched release and Azzof trying to get a reunion and failing to set anything up to promo CD or do what he said he would, hence the lawsuit. Lawyers may have advised him not to talk til later. You can't really mouth off in the press if you have any aspirations of winning a court case. If you come out and act like it's ok that will go against you too.

Not that it would make any difference if the record sold 300k more on release or later. In the end the record has respectable sales, even in the US and they've toured and made bank. And they got paid up front. Only losers are the fans who got fucked by the industry, no videos or day in the sun because they want a reunion to line their pockets. That's the bottom line, if they can't take your money, they take your fun. Fuck them, you could have released CD as leaked mp3's it's still the best record of all time.

Why were they not allowed to do videos by the label (sorry I missed this if it was already discussed)?

It's probable Iovine and Azoff had discussions on what to do about Chinese Democracy and Iovine said "fuck Axl, I'll say I'm glad it's out and I do like the music, but I'm done with Axl's bullshit".

Azoff's getting too much blame, and Iovine's not getting enough blame for the clusterfuck.

There's ways of having videos paid for, GNR did the "making of" with the intent to cover the budgets on "Don't Cry", "Estranged" and "November Rain", just taking a page from "Making of Thriller". They should've been trying to get the songs out on TV shows in 2008. It would've been in the middle of fall season, and Universal has a bunch of TV shows they could've put it on.

I think Axl was also AWOL because he was looking for a replacement for Robin. They could've still made the rounds without him and done something on Kimmel, made a joke about looking for a guitarist, and had Zakk Wylde sit in as a guest. I thought the interview was 4 years too late, and maybe he just looked like hell in '08 to not want to be seen at the time.

It hasnt been discussed much. They told Axl not to do a video. In other words the label werent giving them money for a video. Remember they cut Axl off at a certain point. They did given them 14 mil though. 10 of which went on Roy Thomas Baker rerecording the record as Jimmy Iovine suggested. But when the release came no promo from label just a hand off to BB who settled for a field goal.

No radio play bcos you have to pay for that. They might have had a video but someone needs to get it out there. Azoff or label has that job. Axl should have thrown something together and put it on youtube. But a big budget for Better or SOD or TIL would be needed to have any effect. U2 and Mettalica had videos at the same time. And AcDc did too. Each song on CD cost a million bucks.

they cut Axl off didnt so no video money. Plus no Finck so couldnt tour until they got Ashba and by then Azoff had tried to gey reunion and refushed to book US tour. So they booked that Asian tour. Which Azoff sued them for.

On the way to Taipei Axl attacked the first paparazzi he saw he was obviously pissef at the whole system. The dreads were gone they opened with CD, played ITW, TWAT Shacklers, TIL.

And they toured ever since. How did that reunion play work out for you?

Well they had spent13-14 million, so maybe they said ,were not spending anymore on this album. Is it possible they were relying on the "mystique" of the album or Axls reputation to sell the album.

Dont forget that money wasnt spent on CD only, theres another albums worth of music, at least,we hope lol,

You make some valid points.

But.....if Axl releases an album in 2002 and another in 2006 and they both sell 3-4 million world wide, and sets a definite date of 2010 for album number three......then there is no push for a reunion and the money it can make the label.

The label exes are rightfully pissed at Axl for blowing through so much money and missing so many deadlines.

The sad thing is that if Axl simply plays the game, 90% of all the negative crap thrown his way dissapears. It really is that simple. Every other band in the world manages to do it. You can praise Axl for his integrity all day long. At the end of the day, though, he has released one album of original material in the last 20 years. And Vegas odds are higher for a band member leaving in the next two years compared to an album coming out. I would rather be happy because my favorite singer released a ton of music, rather than praising him for screwing the label.

Playing the game?

An album every four years.

2002 album released.

Agree to spend one week doing promo.

Put out a couple singles and videos.

Tour for two years.

Take a year vacation - release a song on a movie soundtrack or a live EP, just a small treat for fans.

Spend six months writing and recording with band.

2006

Release new album, repeat cycle from above.

2010

Release new album, repeat cycle from above.

2014

Release new album, repeat cycle from above.

2018

Release box set (include one song recorded with classic lineup). New album. Tour. Retire.

During those years, throw in a live album, a greatest hits (with two new songs), an acoustic album and at least one DVD documentary and live album.

Everybody wins.

( just my opinion. Axl and Beta are free to do whatever they want. Including not sharing Axl's gifts with his millions of fans).

I agree if Axl had full control. I dont think he did he had lawsuits for the name and maybe the label started to delay it. Maybe to build anticipation or still trying for a reunion.

But i agree that in 2002 it would have been good. I dont know what destabalized it. Was it reaction to Bucket at the VMAs the formation of VR?

maybe axl wasnt happy with record? maybe the pressure was too much.

Hopefully its bcos they wanted to complete 2 more records and he didnt to release til it was done. Maybe the numbers didnt add up. We say they would but maybe the label was like 14 mil? were going to make none of it bavk and prob take a loss. Who wanted to take a loss?

so i doubt wed have got it without the Best buy deal. But the reunion was still their main goal. How do u feel Axl feels about that? just based off the slightest impression we have of him I think we know.

I'm sure he would like to put out a double cd in 2008. But in the end he had to cut a deal with Best Buy. When faced with a loaded gun, what's the difference. It's not like he had other choices. It was that or nothing.

It's a different world, so I guess you have to roll with the punches, spin like a top.

Who cares? He got the shit out the door.

Exactly but people keep whining that CD didn't sell so it was a failure and Axl fucked everything up. But really it was inside job with Azzof waiting in the wings with a reunion contract to give them there god dam war.
