Vincent Vega
What are some really good Blaxpolitation films? Preferably made before 1980 and set in New York City. I want to get to see Pimps dressed like Gary Oldman as Dracula or like Elvis when he visited Nixon, with all the dirty sleaziness of the genre. PappyTron
It's a modern film, but Black Dynamite is a must-see film for the genre.

Vincent Vega
Also, these films must have kick ass soundtracks in the Funk, Disco, Philly Sound or Soul genres.
PappyTron
Don't forget "Black Belt Jones".

But yes, Black Dynamite is cream of the crop.Fight For Your Life isn't a masterpiece, but an enjoyable watch. Incredibly racey though - lots of racist dialogue, black family is violently and sexually abused by escaped convicts, etc. Plus, the tagline is "they took it until they couldn't take it any more!". Can't go wrong with a film like that

Vincent Vega
Super Fly is my favorite soundtrack.Does it have Funk (think those wild funk riffs like Funkadelic), over the top '70s fashion, Disco or Motown music in it?
Zint
CoffyCoffy is badass...don't fuck with Coffy!
Guest Len B'stard
None of them have any pimps in them dressed like Gary Oldman.Coffy is fantastic though, as is Foxy Brown, Black Belt Jones, Black Samurai, Superfly, Mandingo, The Legend of hooray for tolerance! Charlie, All the Shafts, all the Dolemites, The Mack is probably my personal favorite though, hmmm, what else? There's the great original, Sweet Sweetbacks Badassssss Song with Melvin Van Peebles, Across 110th Street, Hitman is a really underrated classic movie with Pam Grier in a really early role, it's a take on Get Carter or Get Carters a take on it, not sure which, there's a biopic of Leadbelly from the era too which is pretty good, or at least i liked it.Christ, i could go on all day actually, this is one of my specialist subjects. Another great one, trying to pick some exceptional ones for ya, TNT Jackson is sick!! Trouble Man is also a really good movie.A total classic though is The Education of Sonny Carson, REALLY REALLY REALLY good movie Although Miser, do me a favour? Just don't bother watchin' em Edited January 15, 2013 by sugaraylen
Zint
Can't say that I recommend Blackenstein.
Powerage5
Can't say that I recommend Blackenstein. Have it, haven't watched it. I believe it's a double feature with "Holla If I Kill Ya", which may or may not be a Blaxploitation flick
Johnny Drama
Surely Dolemite is all that is needed here?
DieselDaisy
Love the genre (and soundtracks) so I thought I would stick this back up there. Re-watching a lot of this at the moment. The genre become cliched fairly quickly - by 1975 it was already on the wane. The best examples all occur c.'71-74ish, Coffy is excellent. Foxy Brown is a largely inferior sequel to Coffy, but still very good and has one of the greatest opening credits sequences. Super Fly I love for some reason. Painful acting but it has a spirit which I like, a real time Cinéma vérité style about it. Shaft is actually MGM (quite a lot of these films were actually on the majors) and is in reality a slick well produced urban thriller; it is the equal of any other crime thriller, your Dirty Harrys etc. I love the depictions of urban New York life in these films, little vignettes of squalor, crime and real 'characters' - Antonio Fargas, great character actor incidentally. PSQuentin Tarantino, who I'm rather hot/cold on, produced his greatest film in Jackie Brown in my honest cracker ass honky opinion.
Len Cnut
Superfly is probably the best. The Mack is quite fantastic. Slaughter is VERY underrated. Three the Hard Way is also seriously good.
DieselDaisy
What is there not to like about the genre: pimps; crime; guns; urban New York; Grier, officially the sexiest woman to have ever appeared on screen, getting her massive melons out; a jazz/soul/funk soundtrack which produced some of the greatest music in the world (James Brown, Curtis Mayfield, etc). And let's not the film posters,Works of art in themselves! You simply want to see those films, don't you?
Len Cnut
Hitmans a take on Get Carter y'know. Although i think Hitman came first. I think. Pam Grier has a small part in Hitman. Gets her bristols out too. You should watch Original Gangsters, it's a modern day movie starring all the old Blaxploitation heroes like Jim Brown, Jim Kelly, Pam Grier etc, even Ron O Neal...they do they young gang members over. DieselDaisy
What would be your top five of the genre?Sheba Baby which I watched last night is a bit of an iffy Way of the Dragon rip, weirdly set in Louisville! A bit mainstreamed out like a lot of the later Blaxploitation films, blaxploitation for family viewing.

DieselDaisy
And Drew Brown Bundini in Shaft? I think this was when he was out of favour with Muhammad. Not a bad 'henchman'' actually. Could have been a good character actor.
Len Cnut
Ken Norton played the titular role in Mandingo too, ever see that? Thats a good un. I remember seeing Jersey Joe Walcott in a Charles Bronson film too, i think it was Breakheart Pass.
