His band disbanded slowly around that time. He was in litigation over issues involving Guns(St. Louis, former members) and his personal life(former girlfriends suing him) etc. It's safe to say he couldn't tour or put out an album until at least 1998 at the bare minimum which is when he got the foundation for the band together. I do think Axl was in a depression in around that time. Alot of people do not know but when some one is in a deep depression, even the most basic tasks become chores, you do not want to deal with anything that is optional and things that are mandatory are often put off if possible. He was probably happy as a clam the whole time. He's always been such a laid back, easy going guy.
dalsh327
The band imploded after a decade. Some bands never make it that far.Axl had a lot of setbacks and Chinese Democracy in the end wasn't what he envisioned it to be back in 1999-2002 when he was talking trilogies and big ideas, but post Napster and people getting music for free, more so the overseas piracy, I just think it drove a stake into a lot of artists when it came to the music. I think some of them are just disgusted to the point of not wanting to put any new music out there. If Axl wanted to keep selling out stadiums, he would've begged Slash, Duff, and Izzy to come back, but I think keeping that lineup going would've diminished GNR's legacy. The implosion happening when it did (which was after Cobain died, but the grunge fans will always feel Nirvana beat GNR) kind of preserved that period in time for them. They put the live album to document it, but they just need the visuals and the stories to go with it, and we've GOT some of the stories. Not everyone wants to die before they get old. They lived pretty full lives, but there's more to life than making music for a living. That's what they all needed to find out, not be one some endless moneymaking treadmill. Like Duff said in the book, he didn't even know how to clean his own laundry. I'm sure Axl has Team Brazil do some things for him, but now he drives, he can go wherever he wants, if he wants to go shopping, no one's going to harass him, and Beta even mentioned him asking her how to cook something she makes. So he's probably self-sufficient when he's off the road, but back in the 90s? Doubt it. Edited January 30, 2013 by dalsh327
rudolf1978
I mean that back in93 he was on top form,at the top of the world,in newspapers, magazines and so.but someone has said depression,i always thought the guy dissapeared and didnt take care of himself, and the result was guns and roses rock in rio 01,you could see the guy thinking i will do this jump, this run sing this and that and his body not responding. Were you there? He was putting together a band, writing and recording songs and probably recovering from the crazy times of the old line up.If you don't think his voice is going to be good again, and if it bothers you so much that he's not skinny and young anymore, you can just stop following Axl and Guns and just leave. Very easy to do.
Gordon Comstock
If he ever puts out an autobio, 1994-2004 will be the best part. So much mystery.
liers
I think he's more upset with the way 02-06 turned out.94-2001, he was tied up in lawsuits and replacing people. In 02 he was done with lawsuits, had a solid lineup, and was getting attention and gigs. But the 02 ended suddenly, and for whatever reason he went back into reclusiveness. Had the album been released in 03, then the next in 05, the next in 07, etc as planned, I think 2002 guns would've been just as big as original guns AND I doubt robin, brain, and bucket would've left. Roush
There's no mystery. Axl sat on his fat ass, juggling court cases and Geffen execs. While hiring spiritual gurus to remind him of how important he was. Those were "the lost years".
Nosaj Thing
I can resume the silent years (1994 - 2001) = "I hate Slash, should I sue Slash? Slash quit the band. I hate Slash, I gotta sue him".

rckn
Axl is bb, slash was addict as well as duff. Izzy was clean. Steven wasnt. There was not a change to keep it up. Nothing has chanced. If he realizes the need for treatment, we have a change. Rock on!

WilliamBruceRoseJr
The only difference between the "wasted" years 1993-2001 and 2002-2012 is one album and a neverending touring...and a couple of unfinished songs. Not that much. 1993-2001 was indeed very productive, but we know so few material of those years..

izzydoezit
That's the way Axl is. 2008-2013 are also wasted years. 5 good years of his life, and he did not evolve as an artist. He didn't put out new music. He just wasted another 1/8th of his possible carreer span with doing nothing.
