do you think current band could do Breakdown and Locomotive live?

Locomotive is Slash's baby. I don't they'll ever do that, ie. I don't think Axl would ever let them do that one live. Without that fact though, its a song with a lot of guitar parts, and it would probably be perfect for the multiple guitar lineup the current incarnation has. So yes they could pull it off I'm sure, just that Axl probably would never have them play it.

Breakdown I'm sure they could tackle too. In the end, the current band could do any old GNR song. Its all a matter of how the fans will hear it. Personally, I hear it as a tribute band with the original vocalist, but alot don't feel that way. I felt the same way seeing the new band play Civil War. I thought "well its cool to hear Axl sing it, but I'd be more blown away seeing the original band play it." The exact same is true for when I saw Slash and I thought "well its cool to hear Slash play this, but I'd be more blown away seeing the original band play it."

So yeah, the current band is capable of playing anything and playing it well. Its just a matter of how each individual fan thinks it'll sound to them. There's nothing the current band can't replicate or that the original GNR recorded that is just "unplayable" without the original guys, except for songs that just have strong ties to certain people (like the original band playing So Fine without Duff or Dust N Bones without Izzy). I would put Locomotive on that list as well just because I've read its essentially Slash's song, and the only thing I can compare it to is Estranged, which I also thought Axl would never play without Slash. But I could rationalize that with it was more Axl's song always aside from the fills. Breakdown I don't think will appear, but I don't see any reason it couldn't ever be played again. I would have said the same about Estranged, so I could see this being a similar situation if Axl ever decided he wanted to play it again.

The band can play anything. By any artist. They are a talented group of session musicians. That's why Axl uses them as his live band. Locomotive and Breakdown and Coma would all sound just fine coming from the band.

Can Axl still sing any of those songs? Doubtful. Still, I'd rather he give it a try instead of "Out Ta Get Me" again.

No way Axl can pull Coma these days...even on the old days he ran out of breath in some parts...

Most other UYI songs wouldn't pose much of a problem, unless they wouldn't work out at all without rasp.

There are 2 songs that'd fit perfectly to Axl's '11 & '12 clean vocals: Down on the Farm and Bad Obsession.

These songs imo, would provide great platform for the talent muscians in this lineup to really go for it. Since newguns came about, I've been hanging for the day that they tackle these songs and others. Shit even Crash Diet would have been brilliant by the CD era band (bucket n' co).

IMO, Axl is making a huge mistake not pushing the setlist and playing songs out of the ordinary like what OP suggests....the band is arguable more talented than the original and imo would have a field day with these songs.

Axl needs to stop taking music so god damn seriously, let his hair out and enjoy playing with a band. Play old guns songs from all albums and put their spin on it, then get togther and make new songs without fucking stressing about every note and meaning. Best thing that could happen to Guns (or one of) is to hook up with a Jack White of the world and enjoy themselves, pushing out an album in a couple weeks effort.

I bet they could do Breakdown, but as much as I love Locomotive I don't want to hear them play it, dont think Axl could do it justice these days mainly during the "Yeah I bought me an Illusion and I put it on the wall, I let it fill my head with dreams and I had to have them all" and the choruses, there's no way he could make it through all of that without gasping for breath. Just too difficult of a song to pull off these days

They should play more Illusions stuffs.

Agreed!

I would love if they played "Pretty tied up". They could have done it when Izzy joined them on stage or maybe in the future if he plays with them again. I would be happy!!!

Breakdown would be awesome too, it's a very underrated song.

Yeah, I felt the same way seeing Civil War with Slash and then Axl. I loved Slash's guitar but wanted to hear Axl sing it, loved hearing Axl sing it again but would have rather had Slash on guitar. Civil War is probably the song where I have that feeling most. Songs like Nightrain, I get a kick out of seeing people like Myles and Bumblefoot do the song their way (though obviously I'd love to see the AFD/UYI lineup do it, too).

About Coma, i know this is off topic, but the version in Live Era is rerecord or real live?

I'm not positive, but I'd assume it is the same as most of the rest of the album; the core of it is live, but many things have been overdubbed. Of course, there isn't an audience source from that show available for comparison...

On the topic of Coma getting played live again - really can't see it happening. It was a beast for Axl to sing in the 90's, and it would be even more so now.

Those two tracks never got played much live.

If they worked them up maybe base another tour off them?

Breakdown especially is the most underated GNR song.

I do think they pulled it out both songs.

Locomotive would be awesome. But it's too hard for Axl now...

Breakdown isn't fit, because of the "end speech"

I doubt Locomotive has any chance to be played for obvious reasons.

and this is a shame

The problem with most of the UYI songs: the lyrics are too personal (or dated) to play them now...

This is the same reason i don't think we will ever hear Pretty Tied Up (one of my fav from uyi2)

Once there was this rock n' roll band

Rollin' on the streets

Time went by and it became a joke

We just needed more and more fulfilling-

Uh-huh Time went by and it all went up in smoke
