Axl 06/07 better than 2010?

Seriously... Fucken epic... The rasp, power, movement, mannerisms, energy, power, enthusiasm. I find myself watching the 06/07 videos much more than the 2010 videos which most people think is Axl's best since the early 90's. He was fit in 2006/07 too. What you guys reckon? Feel free to post videos, discuss, compare etc.

2009-2010 is my favorite post-90s era. 09/early 2010 was more exciting for me as far as touring goes. Watch SCOM from Osaka 09, he's more into the song there than most other post-90s shows.

In 2010 he was in his zone. The album was out, he was ferocious, you could tell he had more intensity to him. Or maybe that's just how I saw it...

Also, 2007 I thought was a decline from 2006.

Only thing I liked better in 06 was that Robin Finck was still a member. But as for Axl, I liked him more in 2010.

The scream at 0:37 gives me goose bumps.

Great video, I just found him running out of breathe compared to this video:

I also found the rasp comparable to the Reading show. Just my humble opinion.

It's close. I'd say 2006 Axl for looks (he dressed like a bad ass, he was in better shape, and the braids looked good tied back) and 2010 Axl for voice. His actual tonality didn't change much (if at all) in those years but I found him to be a lot more consistent in 2010. In 2006 it took him a few months to hit his stride but once he did, he was unstoppable. That LA show is unbelievable.

I'd say 2006 axl was more in his prime, Energy and fitness wise (but weren't we all??). IRS is a song that really does require Axl to be in the zone. It's not been played in 2012/13, which is a shame cause he puts a lot of passion into that song. There are videos of him playing it in 2010 in south america and struggling to keep up and missing out lines from this song, however, he brought it back in europe the same year and nailed it.

It's not really a question of which year axl was better in, probably which tour, or even show. What song might sound weaker in 2010, there might be another song which sounds better in 2010 than it did in 2006.

I really liked 2006 also. It was like the big comeback. Lot of energy on stage! What went wrong then? CD didn't come out and they disappeared for few years.

And what is the plan now? Maybe even Axl don't know... Do gigs and have fun. Then disappear again?

Gnr is becoming quite boring band to follow. I'm not even waiting for a new album anymore. Just new live songs..

Really talented band, but no intrest to do anything with that...

This LA show is maybe the best GN'R post 2001, way better than RaR.

I have one video for you:

:xmasssanta:

Who are those guys? Where's GNR? I don't see Richard, DJ, Frank, Tommy or Bumble. Is this a cover band?

LOL

Not all of 2006 was all that great and Axl had some shitty shows vocally like RIR Lisbon....but by the end of '06 he was in tip-top shape and this (brilliant) Dec '06 LA show shows it.

I absolutely agree with YG. I put the glorification of 2010 down to revisionism. While 2010 was actually happening people were expressing the same frustrations about his performance which they continue to express about tours to this day. Yes 2010 was Axl's peak year since the recruitment of Dj Ashba and that applied to the band also who were fresh and into it. There was momentum, the youthfulness and excitement of a new band, and that quickly developed into major chemistry. In 2013 however, you can see how life on the road has taken its toll on GN'R, individually there are problems, particularly with no official attempt to gauge the creative juices. Bumblefoot is an innovator and has a compulsive need to create which Axl has failed to satisfy. DJ has become too obsessed with expanding his own so called franchise at the expense of GN'R. Tommy seems to have indulged too much in the lifestyle of touring. And Axl has deeply struggled with consistency.

For me in 2006 there was the vibrancy of a band proud to be touring and hellbent on the completion of Chinese Democracy. Frequent studio time and a rigorous fitness routine benefitted Axl's vocals/appearance and he generally kept a very simplistic yet appealing wardrobe. Axl also still had one of the two most talented 'New GNR' guitarists at his disposal.

Saw the band 5 times in 2002; 5 times in 2006; 3 times in 2010. I know it's subjective, but Axl was consistently better in 2010 than at any other period. Sure, there were moments in 2006 where he was great, but those were mostly near the end of that year. In 2006 at the Hammerstein shows, Axl still vacillated between his 2002 voice and his 2010 voice (sort of what he does now, but far less 2002 back in 2006). The first few shows in 2010 were a bit rough as well (though his higher octave Nightrain in Taipei was breathtaking), but by the first or second show in Canada he was flying high and stayed there until the tour wrapped up.

In the end, comparing 2006 to 2010 is like comparing a Ferrari to a Lamborghini. Both are still awesome. But if I were to close my eyes and wanted to imagine that it was the late 80s/early 90s again, I'd go with a 2010 show. I'm not a huge clean/mickey fan so the less of that the better. And from my experiences at actual shows, there was less clean and more AFD/UYI sounding Axl in 2010 than 2006.

So I guess you could pick out one video on youtube and say, "See, look how great he sounds in 2006 vs. 2010." But from someone who saw multiple shows during both time periods, 2010 was the better year for Axl fans in terms of vocal prowess. If you want to debate physicality, appearance or fashion (none of which are any interest to me), that's on you.

I like 2006/2007 better than 2010. The band was better, axl was better (fitter and sounding better), and axl seemed to still have a hunger to succeed.

I personally think 2001/2002 was best though. Axl's voice wasn't raspy, but it was powerful and he was full of energy and eagerness to succeed.
