Exactly. Rock in Rio tries to suit all musical tastes, there's hard rock, grunge, metal, pop rock, pop music, top notch DJs, rappers and even classical music. In terms of line-ups each person has their own favorites, but it's a fact that Rock in Rio is the biggest festival.

Iron Maiden

Rock in Rio (1985) is considered by band members as one of the most important concerts in the band's history. 350,000 attended, and it was released on the Live After Death DVD.

Rock in Rio 3 (2001) is also considered by the band a memorable concert. 250,000 people attended, and it was released on their Rock in Rio DVD and CD on 2002.

James Taylor

Before Rock in Rio (1985) took place, James Tayler stated that due to his issues with drug dependance and his divorce, that this would be his last concert, and that he would play Rio just because of contractual obligation. During and after the concert, though, Taylor claimed to be amazed by the public's reception, and stated that during his concert at Rio, decided to continue with his carreer. He then wrote his song "Only A Dream in Rio", a tribute to Rio where he sings "I was there that very day and my heart came back alive." Years later, after being invited to play Rock in Rio 3 (2001), Taylor said "it's a honor to be at Rock in Rio."

Queen

All Queen members agreed to qualify their concert at Rock in Rio as one of the most exciting moments of their whole carreer. On an interview a couple of years ago, Brian May said "I can still hear them singing", regarding the loud audience of 600,000 people.

REM

Michael Stipe stated once on a interview that their concert at Rock in Rio 3 was the most exciting moment of the bands's carreer.

Well, and do you want me to get started on the Guns N' Roses relationship with Rio? And camon, Coachella, Glastonbury, SXSW... In aspects of fame, they're really tiny compared to Rock in Rio.

Well, first edition was on 1985, the next one took place on 1991. Then it became a once-in-a-decade festival. Next editions were in 2001 and 2011. Of course, there were Rock in Rio Lisbon and Rock in Rio Madrid, but those were minor versions of the real Rock in Rio. This year there's going to be an edition, and the promoters plan is to make one every two years, and not one every ten years.

It happens on two weekends, from thursday to sunday, it's a 7-8 days fest.

I hear bands talk about playing Glastonbury, Coachella, SXSW in a way that I never hear about Rock In Rio. I don't think the music world waits with baited breath to hear who is heading to Rio.

I beg to differ. Youtube streams the festival all over the world and he's pretty much well known in Europe. While I do agree with Glastonbury being the biggest festival of the world, he doesn't have the diversity held at Rock In Rio. I just think they could work better with the line-up (specially the headliners).

brazilian people are stupid, don't mind him. he thinks brazil is the center of the universe and every band in the world dreams of playing here.

rock in rio is a nice festival, and that's it. cool bands, shitty bands, cool crowds, shitty crowds... whatever. rock in rio is as important to iron maiden as any other festival they've played.

Oh, that's why they released a DVD of every single festival they've played, right? They played Rio twice and released a DVD both.

And yes, Lisbon and Madrid are smaller versions, way smaller.

2010 at Lisbon, for example, there was a night where there were 38 thousand only, and another one that had 45 thousand. At Madrid there was a night where only 30 thousand attended. Lisbon last year had a night where only 25 thousand attended. While Rock in Rio IV, the smaller of all Rock in Rios, was a 7-8 days festival with 100 thousand tickets sold for each night.

All Madrid and Lisbon editions were only a 5 days fest, and Madrid last year it was a 4 day only, half the size of Rio with 25% of the crowd.

So, tell me... When you started laughing at me for saying that Lisbon and Madrid are minor versions of Rio, did you know what you were talking about or you just supposed that I was wrong?

Rock in Rio is overrated.

Name a better one.

Take your pick of any large outdoor concert that isn't overrun by t-shirt swinging Brazilians that like to sing the riffs.

There should be a special place in hell for people like that.

As ManetsBR said, sorry if We and Argentina are the best crowds in the world that sings all the time, even the riffs...

I think we should start a twitter campaign:
