What was the last great Rock subgenre?

To me, "alt country" "Americana" "alt roots music" has been pretty successful. It never really fit into a radio format, but I think "adult alternative" stations playing a wide variety of styles and eras opened that door up.

History of what led up to Ministry changing their sound in 1988 is interesting. They stopped making playing synths dorky and incorporate it into the metal world somehow. No one thought it could be done before them.

Evanescence pretty much did what GNR did - took a little from here and there and made a band out of it. Some people thought she made "Hot Topic Goth Music". To me they're in the same genre with GNR, hard rock with some ballads in the mix.

Metalcore or mathrock. Dubrock maybe. Garage revival. Emo. Postrock.

What is The Killers pigeonholed as?

Indie rock, alternative rock, post-punk/new wave revival, heartland rock.

I have no idea what Heartland rock is but I like how it sounds so, The KIllers are heartland rock for me.

Edit: I've just read at Wikipedia what Heartland Rock is and apparently Springsteen is the biggest act in this genre (), so definitely Heartland Rock is the best subgenre.

Heartland rock was what they called it in the 80s and early 90s - Mellencamp, Seger, Springsteen, Fogerty, Sheryl Crow, Melissa Etheridge, Don Henley, etc. Pretty much most bands who've played Farm Aid (with some exceptions). Bands that were influenced by them became "Americana", "alt country", "roots" or country rock. Springsteen, Petty and Mellencamp covered all those bases for years.

What is math rock and why is it called that? I like math, and I like rock, but I suspect I would prefer to enjoy the two separately.

lots of complex ever changing rhythms and crazy time signatures. the guitars are more prominent and usually the vocals are buried in the mix.

Are Dilinger escape plan math rock? Miss Machines is great.

Nu metal I guess, then garage revival seem the biggest. Weezer, emo.

Korn

The Strokes/White Stripes

My Chemical Romance

Dillinger is considered mathcore, basically math rock fused with hardcore punk, and yeah Miss Machine is a great album. Really looking forward to their new release this year, "One of Us is the Killer"

Thats the one I got, then Miss Machine then another that i lost. Once you get past the abrasive lyrics theres lots of cool parts to their songs. Raging Speedhorn also like that but more metal. We Will All Be Dead Tomorrow is heavy record.
