What would GN'R's legacy be if they had broken up after Lies?

Let's say for whatever reason GN'R broke up in 1989 and only made AFD and Lies. How would they be remembered, do you think?

I ask for those who put down the UYIs or try to diminish the UYI era. I don't think GN'R would be quite as legendary or as respected. The UYIs showed the band weren't all about controversial lyrics and weren't one trick ponies.

Jungle, Sweet Child, Paradise and Patience all still play on radio and on Vh1 Classic to this very day. So yeah, GNR would still be remembered.

With that being said, the UYI records were still very good in my opinion and I'm glad GNR lasted long enough to release those and do the massive tour in support of them

Name one band that is by and large considered legendary (ie. still talked about a lot and sells shitloads of albums) that isn't still going.

Sex Pistols, Jeff Buckley, Joy Division. I don't care about "selling shitloads of albums" when it comes to impact and influence.

Most bands who were around for a short period of time put 2-3 albums out.

GNR had enough for a second album when they put AFD out, give or take a few covers. LLAS was included on Lies because people were desperate for anything GNR had out and willing to pay big money for it.

What would the legacy of GNR be if they broke up after the Stones opening shows and Farm Aid? They'd still be talked about, still listened to, still played on the radio, prob. would have a cooler "James Dean" image over GNR than what the band turned into. The AFD lineup still has a look to it that some bands tried to replicate over the years, and some tried to parody. Why do kids wear vintage GNR t-shirts, for the style or because they're fans of the music? And keep in mind, it wasn't that long ago that people were getting laughed at for wearing GNR t-shirts.

Yeah, I amended that thought in my second reply here...

If the singer doesn't die early and your band breaks up without much output, it will just become virtually forgotten and ignored by radio/media.

Pretty much this, AFD set the bases for a great band, without the UYI I don't think people would care about GN'R they would be seen righ now as one hit wonders and nothing else

Legacy? I would think that given the standing of AFD alone they would be remembered for being the last true great hard rock band to roar out of LA and the SunSet strip. They would be remembered for being able to write amazing vivid songs that are by now, classics. People would speculate about GNR like they did the Beatles and Led Zeppelin...what if? What IF they had managed to get it together with a hint of sadness....(wait! Shit!! thats what people are doing even NOW)

MAny would say that GNR ended with Lies and that UYI was the beginning of Axls solo career. The image of AFD to UYI and the evolution in the music definately changed. The cohesive gang of misfits who screamed thier way off of the Sunset Strip and managed to produce the likes of AFD were , by the time UYI- individual rockstar millionaires each with their own entourage of managers and lawyers.

Duff said it in an interview: "They got too big too fast." At one point in time they were street rats "street urchins and the next they are able to throw $100,000 after show parties!

It wouldn't be nowhere as big. GnR was known for the music until 1991. In 1991 when they started the UYI tours, they became known for their destruction, craziness and entertainment. GnR wasn't doing huge shows until around 1991.
