Are Punk Rock fans by nature snobs/elitists?

There is an element of that in punk as, punk was essentially founded as a consequence of bands people hate. It was built as the antithesis of The Beatles, Zeppelin, Crosby Stills and Nash, Queen, Floyd. To be a 'good punk' you simply must have a list of bands you despise.

But, Metalfans are the most elitist.

Maybe in the genesis of the London art scene days.

I read about that "bands you despise" stuff more than I experienced it.

That always struck me as contrived.

Besides, it was moreso bands you were bored shitless with, especially when something fresh and invigorating was going on.

Some people chose to do something that was different, there were those that appreciated it, and those who loathed it.

No one threw away their album collection I assure you.

Everyone just kinda, set those records...off to the side, for a few years..and tapped into the lightning in a bottle that was going down.

So, are you saying the early punks held onto their copies of Ummagumma and Close to the Edge?

I'm saying, it wasn't as cookie cutter as "if you want to be a punk, you have to hate this band and this band".

There were only a few key cities where the movement started, by the time it started to spread to other cities and countries, and more importantly, in to the suburbs..kids started getting in to it because of the bands they were hearing, not because of the bands they didn't like.

There was no guide book on the rules and regs you had to follow before you got into the clubhouse.

People who are hardcore about a genre of music tend to be snobby.

I think when someone says "punk rock" now, it's usually talking about the fashion end of it.

Punk was pretty close to dead in the mid 80s, but there were a few still carrying on, and still new bands forming. When GNR started out, they were playing the same clubs punk bands were playing until they started having a bigger following.

In my experience there definitely is a group of punk fans with their heads plugged deep into their own asses. The vegan punks and the straight edgers, and god dammit the vegan/straight edge punks. Generally these are by far the most condescending snobs of the culture, that said not all of them are as gung ho about the whole thing but some certainly are and I can't fucking stand them.
