Mel Gibson joins Expendables 3

Recommended Posts

Enjoyed the first one, didn't see the second one, and will now definitely skip the third one.

I would have thought Mel would still be considered the equivalent of poison ivy in Hollywood. I remember seeing him sitting beside Jodi Foster at last year's Golden Globes and wondering how this guy could ever show his face in public again.

I have a hard enough time supporting Stallone's projects because I know he's such a monumental douche bag in person (have friends who have worked on sets with him - say he's the worst person to work with). Adding Gibson to the mix certainly won't help.

And oh, for those who forget why Mel should be shunned, here's a funny and disturbing reminder:

You want to know something? Alcoholism runs in my family, and I saw it completely, absolutely change the behaviour and mindset of someone very close to me. It was coupled with a nervous breakdown, and it was like this person's personality did a complete 180, and the vile coming out of her mouth was shocking. There was stuff in there buried from her childhood coming out, repressed feelings and memories, and it was scary. She's clean now, but if anyone had met her during that time, I think they probably would have thought she was one of the most awful people in the world, yet it was totally different from how I knew she really was.

Gibson grew up under a father who was a Holocaust denier and probably spouted off a lot of conspiracy theories and Jew hate all during his childhood. He went through a rough patch with his family/wife during the time of his arrests. He was clearly abusing alcohol to a great degree. All of that will cause nasty, repressed stuff to surface. For all we know, the anti-Jew stuff was buried deep in Gibson's subconscious and may have been something he was repressing his entire adult life.

I'm not making excuses for anything he said or did, but I'm not going to let that affect my opinion of him as an actor. The truth? Hollywood is, and always has been, full of some of the sleaziest, worst people you'll ever encounter. A vast majority of the stuff that goes on behind closed doors will never see the light of day, and some of the rumours (like Kirk Douglas raping an underage Natalie Wood) will probably never really be proven. If I judged films by the lives of the actors behind them, I probably wouldn't enjoy many movies. I still like Mel Gibson, and even somewhat sympathize with him, despite the fact that he said some horrendous things. It ruined his career, and he'll never return to the Hollywood titan he once was, but he's still a damn fine actor and a good filmmaker, and I don't need to point out the hypocrisy of you judging someone for being a douchebag or saying racist/sexist things on a forum for a band whose singer was taken to court years ago for similar things. Just sayin'!

Just out of interest, what specifically did your friends say about Stallone?

But i agree with ER, to a point at least. If you require total equivalency of political or social mentality with a hollywood actor then you'll find yourself watching very few films indeed.

We shouldn't be denied the artistic brilliance of Mel Gibson over things expressed drunkenly and subsequently regrettably outside of film. I wouldn't have watched the third Expendables until reading this.

Had one friend tell me that nobody on the set was allowed to make eye contact with Stallone - someone who did was promptly fired. Another friend was working on set one day and Stallone brought his kids to work with him (this was years ago when his kids were younger). His kids looked bored so my buddy gave them some toys to play with so they weren't sitting around. Stallone found out and freaked out on my friend before firing him.

You have a point about separating the art from the person, especially with respect to my admiration of Axl's creative output versus who he is as a person (allegedly). For me a lot of it's very contextual. I became a fan of Axl when I was a young kid who never really heard anything about his alleged indiscretions with respect to his treatment of women until much older. The lyrics of One in A Million never really bothered me as I always interpreted him writing them from a perspective of a character - and not necessarily his own stance on racial matters.

While I don't deny that Axl likely has had issues with female battery in his past, I still have to give the guy the benefit of the doubt because it hasn't actually been proven in the court of law. Nor do we have any physical evidence (pictures, police reports, etc) to go by. Is it likely? Sure. But do I know for sure? Nope. I will say that if in the last 15 years I found out that Axl had beaten a pregnant woman like Mel had done, that would be it. I would still be a GNR fan because there's more people in the band than just Axl, but I would have written him off the moment I found out.

Sure, many celebrities and people we admire or support are likely douche bags who deserve very little of what life has afforded them. But beating a woman (especially pregnant) is something I just won't tolerate. Same reason why I won't watch any movies by Roman Polanski films.

I don't claim the mantle of consistency here, I realize that. That said, if it were the other way around and it was Gibson who was alleged to have abused his wife twenty years ago while documentation shows that Axl beat his pregnant girlfriend I would likely tepidly support Gibson while condemning Axl. There are many issues I'm able to separate the art from their makers, but physical abuse on a pregnant woman is not one of them.

Back on topic, the film is starting to look great. Kimbo Slice is going to be in this movie (no shit) If his scene is longer than 30 seconds, he'll probably get winded. I still hope to hear Segal is in it, but don't expect it at this point. I agree Ford and or Eastwood would be epic, but my personal fav's would be Segal and The Rock. Mel will make an awesome bad guy.

I absolutely love those movies!!!! They are awesome! I can't wait.!

Still negociations with Snipes and Chan. I love it if they join too.

But now for sure Gibson and Cage added.

The movies are very funny I love Stallone, Arnie, Bruce and mostly Statham  .

It's going to be great again.

I see what Downzy is saying because, there's a boundary there and we all know there is, personally i don't mind Gibson cuz quite frankly he's a shit actor anyway so he can have a go at jews and bully women all he likes, it don't really...he's sort of functionless to me.

I like Gibson, and let's be honest here - he didn't really say anything all that bad about the Jews.

no it wasn't just the Jews that Mel insulted, it was also Blacks, Gays and Women. Also showed true class by punching his wife while she was holding there baby, he doesn't deserve to be in the film industry anymore
