I remember reading once about how Paradise City was supposed to be inspired by Zero The Hero from Born Again...

yeah the riff to paradise city is the exact same as zero the hero.

as for which one you should get. the only one that i consider a real dud is forbidden. forbidden and 13 are similar in a weird way  the seventh star was never meant to be a sabbath album, it was a tony iommi solo album but the record company refused to release it unless it came out under the black sabbath name. the name of the band is technically black sabbath:featuring tony iommi, a great fuck you by iommi  originally being a solo album seventh star really doesnt sound like sabbath. it is softer and more i guess you could say radio friendly. still not a bad album if you can get into it.

the rest are all great, i would recommend born again or the devil you know. born again like powerage said is the worst produced and worst mixed album of all time. i have no fucking clue what happend in the mixing of this album. the band said the album did not sound this way when they left to go on tour. the drums are really muddy and the lead guitar tone is really high pitched. when the solo to trashed comes in it must sound to me like a dog whistle sounds to a dog  there are unmixed demos that you can get that sound a million times better.

the album though is top notch. ian's vocals are great and the riffs are amazing, and bill ward's drumming is quite good. i love all the songs on the album.

the devil you know is what 13 should have been IMO. the production on this album kicks some serious ass. iommi comes up with some masterful riffs on this one(follow the tears is one of his all time greatest riffs)

the only complaint about that album is the drumming is not all that great.

the tony martin era of sabbath is criminally underrated. you cannot go wrong with any of them(except forbidden) forbidden has a couple of good songs especially shaking off the chains. that has a beast riff by iommi and is a great song.

i would start with the martin with either headless cross(my first martin album) or cross purposes. cross purposes lineup is killer

tony martin- vocals

tony iommi- guitars

geezer butler- bass

bobby rondinelli- drums

headless cross has the almighty cozy powell on drums which is awesome. quality wise i think headless cross is the best martin album IMO.

Pretty much all of this. The Devil You Know is an incredible SABBATH record. Headless Cross and Cross Purposes are both pretty good too. So I'd start with those.

The Devil You Know is just great stuff for me. It has some serious power and no 9-minute snoozers *cough*13*cough*. I don't mind 13, but The Devil You Know is how modern Sabbath should sound, IMO. But yes, start with those three and then try out Born Again.

EDIT: Had to listen to Follow The Tears after bran said he thought it was one of Iommi's best riffs, and it definitely is. I totally forgot how badass that riff is haha.
