Bon Jovi

Started singing this song to myself the other week...

Went home to play it on Spotify, found I hadn't added it... I added it.

Bon Jovi have a bunch of great songs though.

I might rewrite this song and sing what I sang which is close to the song but, not but; more meaningful to me :P

When I was in New Jersey I was where I go (Seaside Heights in Ocean County) - I was a 5 minute walk from the boardwalk...

I remember thinking nothing of it and hearing Bon Jovi played there once and... Since it was New Jersey; Seeing a lot of Bon Jovi stuff included in the rock memorabilia on sale in various stores on the boardwalk was just like 'Hey, welcome to New Jersey' sort of thing.

Then years later I saw this.

That's my hang out in New Jersey in Seaside Heights.

I think they get a lot of hate, just because people love to hate them. I'm not saying they're anything special, from a musical point of view. But they do have many good songs. You just have to be in the mood for them.

I've asked people why they hate them and the answer is usually: because they're pussies or because they're gay or because they suck

...well... haters gonna hate. It's just a band... relax. And they have their faithful fans, just like any band out there. My point being, sometimes we hate things just because they don't appeal to us or because they're not our cup of tea or whatever.

But I've always thought, as I said before, that if you take the time to listen to some of the bands you think you dislike, you may find stuff that you'll enjoy. So what if Bon Jovi sings cheesy stuff? This is music, you're supposed to be entertained. It's not a history lesson, it's just a song. :shrugs:

As of right now, I don't get the they make radio-friendly music thing. Why is that such a bad thing?

When I was a kid, about 4 years old or so, I was in line with my family to see Santa Claus at the mall. Jon Bon Jovi with his wife and kid were the people next in line. So I sorta spent an hour with Jon Bon Jovi once.

Cool! I liked their Slippery When Wet and New Jearsey albums when I was like 10 years old, but even then i knew it's a guilty pleasure :shades:

Why is it a guilty pleasure?

well back then it WAS a guilty pleasure because noone of my cool schoolmates liked them, they were just "not cool", something like a boysband of the 80s.

And now i see them more as a business project, than a real rock band. Jon was trying too hard to get teenage girls like him. Songs seem to be well-calculated, some had drive and good melodies, but laked the edge, like real strong emotions, plus the cheesy lyrics. Im still talking about 80s stuff, for me all the albums after These Days are unbearably boring

Keep the Faith and These Days. That's when they went all 90s (introspective and cynical) and it worked. The albums before and after are not necessarily bad but just kind of boring. Several good songs. I haven't heard anything put out after 2005.

They're brought down a bit by the frontman who has this whole pretty boy persona and the vocal style to go with it and most of the time it sounds as if he's strictly singing to get girls attention and there's definitely some cheese in the lyrics but they're not a bad band overall.

My dad saw them live last year and he's not by any means a fan but he raved on quite a bit about how good their show was.

Because the Bon Jovi target audience is 40-year-old soccer moms. Don't get me wrong, I like the odd Bon Jovi song, but I know I'm not the target demographic.

Exactly, Jovi is mostly a chic band. Many of their older songs are recognizable and fun to sing along with, but he's singing to the ladies not to the dudes. If a guy wants to express to a girl his feelings about her, Jovi songs are the way to go. Living on a Prayer, Never Say Goodbye, You Give Love a Bad Name ... all great "message" songs.

Wanted Dead or Alive is just a great song, period.

You and Tomb hit the nail on the head.

When they started, they were a pop-rock band. Runaway, Wanted Dead or Alive, Living on a Prayer, Bad Medicine and a host of pop-rock ballads.

Then they got older and matured a bit as writers and as a band and produced more adult orientated rock - and that's the period that I really enjoyed them. These Days is - IMO - their best album and features several great rock songs. The song These Days is probably my favorite song by them.

But the last stage of their career.....the one Deeds speaks of, where they are catering to the 40 year old mom..........I've found their songs extremely boring. I liked one song off their last album, but that's the only song on my Ipod from them for probably the last decade.

LIKE them or hate them, you have to admit that they treat their fans WAY better than Axl does. They release albums on a constant basis, as well as live recordings and things like that. And they always communicate with their fan-base on what they are doing and what future plans are.

Finally.........I've never understood why people get offended or angry or feel the need to insult people that like bands that they don't like. I don't care if bands are popular, edgy, cool, or if the general rock fan considers them to be gay or terrible or whatever. I've got all the hard rock staples on my Ipod........and I've also got old blues, a few country songs, some hip hop, some rap and then things some of you guys would want me banned for: Hanson, Pink, Bon Jovi, Warrant, Alicia Keys, Leona Lewis and one song by Vanilla Ice.

Music is to be enjoyed, not for people to hate on each other!!!! We should be happy there are so many different types and genres out there.

I saw them by accident a couple of years ago and the concert was better than I expected. So 1 point for them. And this year they are playing for free for their fans here (because of the bad economic situation), so that was nice too. And some old songs like "You give love a bad name" and all that are pretty enjoyable. So, yes, Bon Jovi is not that bad.

Though I bought "Bounce" some years ago and it was awful.

That's not really a compliment. Pretty much everyone does that these days, it's expected. It's a failure if you don't.

It's ironic to see Jovi haters on a Guns N' Roses board.

They had the same fans and pussy songs in their heyday.

Not really. Some fan overlap, sure. A few sensitive sort of ballads, but less cheese. Plus those songs were surrounded by full out hard rock songs on the rest of the album.
