Tommy deserves more credit

I really didn't get it when some of you were enthused at the idea of Duff replacing Tommy when MSL leaked parts of those emails. Musically I think nobody aside from Axl is as good as Tommy. The Replacements were truly great, Let It Be in particular, and Tommy played a part in that. Village Gorilla Head and One Man Mutiny are solid records and I would wager that nobody in the current line-up has individually produced something as catchy as this gem of a song:

I like Tommy but I would take Duff back in GNR no question. I mean to me it is obvious as to why people would prefer Duff in the band

Maybe I worded it wrongly. I wasn't necessarily surprised that people would like Duff to come back. I was more surprised as how readily people would desert Tommy.

Duff is a shit bassist but a great person, Tommy is a shit person and an ok bassist.

What don't you like about Duff's bass writing / playing. Even Tommy said once he got into playing Duff's parts he respected him a lot more as a musician.

I don't have much respect for pick bassists, and I've just never been a fan of the way his playing sounds. Personal opinion. His backing vocals are great though.

Tommy is great, I've always liked him; I have to bring up that recent interview with Marc Maron again, though, and say it kind of soured me a bit in terms of how I view him within GN'R. Seems like it's just a paycheck for him and I kind of (naively, I guess) assumed after almost two decades it would mean a little more to him. But he's great. The Replacements were great. If their reunion is as successful as I think it will be, I'm not sure how long he'll even stick around with GN'R. Replacements have become such a bigger band since their split-up.

He seemed genuinely excited to play new music at Rio III. I think if they were a more productive band it would mean more.

I think a lot of people wanted to see the Replacements reunite for a long time, their catalog has been kind of building up a following over the years the way the Pixies had. What the outcome of this will be - just these shows or a full on reunion - no one knows. I think we'll see after The Replacements do those dates.

I think Tommy has to have felt it was time to move on from GNR at some point, but at the same time it's hard to leave something where his only responsibility is to plunk away on a bass, throw in a song of his, and get paid well for it, he doesn't have to worry about anything else except getting to the gig, be able to play, and have working equipment.

Duff coming back in the band could also tie into the songwriting, but seeing that he bailed on Janes Addiction, I don't know how committed he is to being in a big band. Something like getting together and doing the all star gigs with Matt in the summer will make him easy money, it's another "show up n' play" situation, the logistics are on Matt's shoulders.

There's a lot of great bassists that could fill Tommy's shoes, but who would make the commitment?

From the current lineup, aside from Axl, I only really like Tommy and Fortus. But if had the choice who I wanted playing bass in Gn'R, it would be Duff no questions asked. Man, I would love to see him return, and I believe he's put out feelers in the past. Axl just isn't going to desert Tommy. In all honesty, best case scenario I'm hoping for is this Replacements reunion turns into more of a full-time thing and Tommy leaves Gn'R, opening the door for Duff.

My rationale for not considering Tommy integral is that I dont really think he likes GNR, or understands what it means to diehard fans. He doesnt have a signature sound, imo. There's nothing I can point to since he's been in the band where I've been "Damn! Tommy is great!" Duff balanced out Axl because whereas Axl takes the hardest path, Duff takes the easiest, punkiest path. Great bands have distinct personalities. Duff's sound, especially on something like Locomotive, is full of personality, and matches well with the others.

Tommy is a great musician, has been a rock solid presence in Guns N' Roses, and I give him complete credit that that has been in the band for sixteen years now and is the "glue" (besides Axl) that holds the current Guns N' Roses together. That being said, he was brought in to replace Duff McKagen, I do not think anyone has a "loyalty" issue with Tommy; they'd just be stoked to see Duff back. Just like no one would be betraying DJ Ashba or Frank if Slash or Steven were to rejoin.

As a songwriter, I feel like The Repalcements and his solo career are perfect outlets for it. I have no problems with him helping out on songs, but I think his natural writing voice is better suited for solo albums. I love his songs (just had the song "One Man Mutiny" come on my ipod today in the car) but I do not hear those and think, "this dude needs to be writing the songs in Guns N' Roses."
