Towelie
I see this bandied around a lot, but is there really any proof that this was the case or is it merely fan speculation?
AndreCC
I think he planned to work on it a bit more... Thank God they have released it and ended up Axl's ludacris plans...

Guest NGOG
He wasn't forced into releasing Chinese Democracy, as in, physically coerced. What happened is that certain events were manipulated into occurring so that Axl would have no choice but to release Chinese Democracy.
Dazey
I don't think what we got was what Axl wanted to release. It's not coincidence IMO that every single one of the leaks was included on the record. I think the fact that a full album's worth of songs was leaked forced the record company's and Axl's hand and we got a release forced out the door that bore little resemblance to the originally intended final product. wasted
The only thing is he might have wanted 2 cds put out. He said he saw CD as a double. But maybe Best Buy only needed or wanted one. I doubt Best Buy wanted Silkworms.
Guest charlie555
Every standard music contract with Universal contains a clause that requires both parties to agree to a release under certain conditions. He would not have been forced against his will. But whether certain conditions were present that forced his hand is another matter - although Universal would have been unlikely to badger or 'force' him to release as it wasn't ever going to be a big success (certainly not as big as Katy Perry or whoever) so why would the label focus on Chinese? Why would they open themselves up to legal proceedings for duress? Most likely what happened is the label said "no more money unless you release at least Part 1" and Axl couldn't/wouldn't continue to fund it himself so he agreed to release it. Not exactly forcing him to do anything as that is a reasonable decision for Universal imo.The only thing is he might have wanted 2 cds put out. He said he saw CD as a double. But maybe Best Buy only needed or wanted one. I doubt Best Buy wanted Silkworms. The studio version of Silkworms is much cleaner and tighter than the live one
wasted
I think it's more the lyric content of Silkworms, although hat wrestler guy said the What can I do with a Bitch like you has gone?I think Axl wanted to release it back in 2006. The Best Buy deal must have really been too good to turn down. Azzoff was promising this and that so it looked like it would get a decent release. I'm not sure I buy the "these are the leaks" theory. they leaked because Axl was road testing them in strip clubs or giving them to new york jets pitchers.I'm not sure what the label would think of an album of electronica or Silkworms type stuff. To me CD was the fight for freedom. Now they have that what are they going to do?

Apparently this dude is some kind of legend on this forum, because I've seen at lest two dozen people accused of being him yet I've never seen anyone post under that name. Nosaj Thing
Chinese Democracy is the worst record any GNR member past or present has ever released. Axl should be thankful that Buckethead, Finck and Freese made it sound mediocre at best.

shades
Axl signed something many moons ago and got a lot of money up front to produce a record that simply stated he would release a CD at some point. So in that regard yes he had to release something or be on the hook for the advance. This is old news. phaeryen
I see this bandied around a lot, but is there really any proof that this was the case or is it merely fan speculation? He was on board for a while, but when things went against his will a little bit he kind of crumbled down(again!!!!), and refused to talk to the record company even over the phone. He tried to cancel the release behind the scenes up until the very last minute but he was not able to do so.Later on he has commented that the release year, 2008, was the worst year of his life.these are the facts we know for now. LTD
**Atmospheric static CHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH sound*Using a knife+1, I was able to tear a hole to fabric of reality. I'm contacting you from alternate universe identical to one you habit..with significant exception of retarded things in Pop-culture never happening here; they have been outlawed. We have only two Terminator movies and only one Matrix movie. No boybands or Justin Bieber.Guns n' Roses disbanded in 1994. Nothing under the name has been released ever since. Their renown and influence survived grunge, industrial and testof time with ease and grace. Guns N' Roses as a band now enjoys a semi-mythical status. People speak of it in same tones they use about Jim Morrison or Jimi Hendrix. Fortunatelly in case of GNR. 'Live fast die young' killed the band, not people in it. We don't have Marilyn Manson tributes appearing on End of Days soundtrack, Chinese Democracy is neither an average, awkwardly bloated album nor a half a decade old net meme. When someone mentions "Team Brazil" on Internet forum where people cherich the memory of GNR, we all assume he speaks of the Football team. Person named DJ Ashba most assuredly does not fucking get to play classic songs like Nightrain during Las Vegas gig of New-New GNR of later days. Thanks to STFU you fucking retard - act of 2001, it is now illegal for DJ Ashba to use social media for sharing his thoughts.
