In Defence Of: Guns N’ Roses ‘Chinese Democracy’ (FasterLouder.com.au article)

Well, when Miley Cirus, Justin Bieber and Pitbull top charts and good quality music is released completely unnoticed, there isn't much to argue about, is there? But maybe it's us who have bad taste and Pitbull's 80's pop song sample-o-rama is what good music is all about!

What's funny about this is that in 1991 there were people saying the same thing about GN'R topping the charts. If Led Zeppelin and Beatles fans had Internet forums back then they would have been talking all kinds of trash on Axl Rose and his commercialized Illusion crap. (Not that I'm saying they're crap, but you get my point?)

I hate Pitbull but Bieber and Cyrus aren't the bane of pop culture that people make them out to be. They make disposable, catchy pop tunes that people enjoy. There are worse artists out there - some of them imitators of bands like GN'R. Give me that annoyingly catchy Cyrus tune over anything fucking Buckcherry is putting out, you know what I mean?

Anyway, it goes without saying that there is still great music being made these days that doesn't go anywhere near the Billboard charts. The Internet has opened up music and entertainment in general in a fashion that is exciting and liberating. You can find any kind of music you like these days, and there are great artists out there only selling 10,000 physical copies of an album but still doing their thing because of the Internet allowing them to reach more people. You want great rock bands? You only need to look so far as Queens of the Stone Age, who never struck it as big domestically as they did internationally, but they put out another career-defining record this year and if you choose to focus on the pop charts and ignore all the solid stuff being released, that's your own fault. Don't bitch and whine about easy targets like Bieber (seriously, such an obvious easy target that it's not even worth using him as a comparison anymore) and try to bemoan the state of music in 2013 when there are tons of great underground artists reaching audiences that they couldn't have in 1991 when the Billboard charts truly DID define what people listened to and purchased.

Truth is most of the world has seen it as a nostalgia act since the very first Nu show.

Pretty much. And I would say they had the potential to break from that at least a little bit by releasing a lot of music and really striving to move forward. But instead they did one album over 7 years after that first "nu" show and have been relying on the legacy from GNR past as the mainstay of their current existence

So many excuses. If people wanted the album, they would have it. Best Buy isn't a secret club.

This is the greatest excuse yet. CD would have sold more, but no one could get to Best Buy!

I've heard this excuse a TON over the last 5 years. I absolutely LOVE Chinese Democracy, but I don't feel the need to make excuses for it. Especially not by acting like the reason it didn't do better was because it was only available at one of the most popular vendors in the US.

I put your love of CD right there in the "He loves Garth Brooks too, forgive him, he's a good guy" category.

You are never going to let the Garth thing go, are you? haha

I'm not a huge country fan, but Garth is alright. He's like the GNR of country- massively popular, then dropped off the scene. Its like history forgot him. I liked that Chris Gaines thing. I like his stances against Ticketmaster, Wal-Mart. I'll take Garth over any of the new country.

The only point I was trying to make is that if CD had been a Wal mart Exclusive it would have sold more, there is no doubt about it.Black Ice was available in every section of my local Wal-Mart in special cardboard displays with shirts etc.It was overkill but it worked.Foot traffic in Wallyworld trounces BB,and I think everyone and their dog bought it.

Does anyone think Black Ice would have sold 8 million + US as a Best Buy only exclusive? No chance in hell.

Cd didn't sell all that great because it isn't full of real catchy earworm songs for one,but the BB deal hurt as well.

The album would have sold more had the release coincided with a new tour and had Axl done some press/tv shows, etc.

600k for a veteran rock band in 2008 isn't bad btw. How many copies did Pearl Jam's last few albums sell?

Pearl Jam's done really well the past couple records- Backspacer and Lightning Bolt. I know LB went #1. They've also changed their approach considerably the last couple albums- lot of marketing, lot of interviews, video, songs geared specifically for radio, etc. They've done well commercially, but I feel like it's compromised their artistic integrity to a great extent.

Yes there is because it's a made up assumption without any way to back it up.

Common sense points to it would have sold more. How much more? Lets make up something and say at least 1 million just on the wider availability alone.Even if people bought it, listened to it once and tossed it in the trash makes no difference, kind of like most people with Black Ice and its one good song..

It would have sold 1 million more? As in it would have sold 267% of what it sold at Best Buy? You wanna try again, or are you satisfied with being relegated to the joke bin?

Lets go with 500,000 more just for fun.

You think it would have sold nearly double?

That's very hard for me to believe, but I'd have to do research I'm not going to do to be certain.

Conservative estimate: 500,000 more

Realistic estimate: 1,000,000

I hate Axl estimate: 100,000

Don't do that shit, man. I love Axl. I just don't have the rose tinteds on.

Grasping. You're assuming that those customers are browsing the...what 2 or 3 6 foot long aisles of music at Wal-Mart?

Wal-Mart is dedicated to games and movies in that section of electronics.

But whatever you have to tell yourself.

Black Ice displays were set up all over the store- including the entrances and registers.

Rusty is more devoted to and passionate about CD than anyone here

Not grasping, huge potential of casual buys, like Black Ice planted all over the store.
