The role of fan forums with Artists

I don't really follow any other forums for other bands, so I'm just curious if other bands take as many cues or seem to be as obsessively invested in the goings on of a fan forum? It seems strange to me how much stake band management and Axl himself places in the forums and their operation. It seems that Guns N' Roses forums are unique in that they are so prominent in the minds of management and the band itself, prominent being that management and band members even bother to comment or take interest in the forums at all.

Comparing to your experiences with other fan run band forums, are GNR fan forums unique in the sense of how much attention they receive from the band itself?

You can't compare it mostly because Guns n' Roses doesn't do anything like a normal band.

But compared to other band forums I visit, this is by far the most frustrated one. At times the most divided as well.

Which, again, goes back to the band. When a band follows up on promised releases and keeps people updated on what they are (or aren't) doing it's usually much more happy. Don't expect any special treatment. But with a normal band, a good forum doesn't need any of that anyway.

On the bright sight, it also has the most colorful members.

A Leonard Cohen fan forum I visit actually offers presales for shows. Which is ace. ^_^

No other band has such an active internet activity.

Also true. I've always wondered why that is though.
My guess is that this is the only place where Gn'R exists.

Very philosophical point. Are we occupying an alternate dimension here?

And more importantly, if we are, is there any dimension at all in which GnR IS productive?

Also why are there so many forums? I'm still discovering ones I didn't know about. I had no idea newgnr existed until yesterday.

Not to be an ass here, but most GnR forums were founded because it's founder didn't agree with either mygnr or htgth.

I'm a huge Jack White fan so it would come as no surprise that I think the Third Man Records Vault is a pretty rad idea. If GN'R did *anything* like that, I'd hand my wallet over.

You have my curiosity. Care to explain the concept?

Is it anything like what Metallica or The Black Crowes do where you can buy nearly every love show as a soundboard recording through a website? I've bought the Black Crowes and Metallica shows I attended through those and I think it's an amazing way to give something special to the fans and make a buck doing it.

Probably the one where Slash took control of everything and GnR is currently playing dance festivals in Ibiza and dueting with Rihanna.

Is this dimension looking any better yet?

Yes, well... I would say that 500 or so active members all around the world is not that much.

I go to a Bruce Springsteen forum but it doens't count because everybody loves him. Anyway, I don't think he cares, neither any other relatively important band. It's ridiculous to pay so much attention to what people say on forums.

That's a great point! Especially because Rhianna is all over Slash's solo albums and Slash is totally playing Ibiza dance clubs. Oh no, wait, he's the guy consistently putting out music and touring his new material.

Except The GNR forum.

True. This is probably a sweeping statement but most people's forum activity is more about them and their lives than the band or artist themselves. Axl et al should probably try and keep this in mind.

Actually he has done all those things. I like a lot of stuff he has done including the ibiza festival but a lot of people would not be happy for GnR to have taken that direction. Not that they necessarily would, this is all other dimension presumption...

So would you say that the level of personal involvement by members of the band and management on fan run forums are unique to Guns N' Roses? It is so strange, but unfortunate at the same time that the level of attention to the fan base isn't positive.

I've done that with The Crowes too!

What Third Man does is offer something called The Vault. It's basically a quarterly package that usually offers 3 pieces for $59. It's always a 12" LP (sometimes a double), a 7" and usually a book. To give you a clearer picture, the most recent Vault that I got was a double live, soundboard concert of The White Stripes from the Elephant Tour that was previously unreleased. The 7" was a demo on each side from the Elephant album and the book was a bunch of previously unseen pictures taken during the recording of Elephant.

On top of that you get access to their forum which is active, Vault Chats where Jack White himself shows up regularly, discounts on merch and exclusive merch.

a fan forum is reflective of that band.

the band typically sets the precedent, and the fans follow suit. for example, radiohead and tool fans are pretentious goofballs. yet nin fans have a good sense of humor, and are generally more laid back.

now look at gnr fans. it attracts a blend of normal folks who like to drink, and have a good time. juxtaposed against whackos like warchild, and msl. it's the band that sets the precedent.

Other fan forums are populated by posters who are actually fans of the band who the forum is dedicated to.

this

The Muse forum for example are much more active

but in GNR's case, everything is special, even the lack of new music, Slash departure etc. etc.

and yes, other bands fan forums existed where band members posting, it's not so unique
